Taking Christmas Back From our World of Grinches
 
Billy D. Strayhorn tells the story of the little boy who decided to write a letter to God one Christmas. He started out by writing: “Dear God, I’ve been a really good boy this year.” Unfortunately, he remembered that God was all knowing and all seeing and he decided that he couldn’t lie to God. So, he crumpled up that letter and started over. This time he wrote: “Dear God, I know I haven’t done everything I should have, but I really tried to be good.” He stopped and crumpled up that letter, too. It was obvious that he was struggling with what to write to God.
 
As he sat there thinking he looked up and saw his mother’s favorite piece of sculpture on the mantel. It was a beautiful rendition of the Madonna, the mother of Christ. The boy perked up and ran out of the room. He came back with a towel and a shoebox. He walked over, carefully picked up the Madonna, gently wrapped it in the towel, carefully put it in the shoebox and then hid it in the closet. He immediately went back to the table and wrote: “Dear God, if you ever want to see your mother again . . .”
 
It’s time the Church took back Christmas. And we do. Every year we take it back and bring back the meaning and the purpose. The world (and the Grinch) tries to hold it for ransom each year, with its multiplicity of gadgets and this year’s list of must have toys; the world tries to make demands and hold Christmas for ransom but it never works. The birth of the Christ child is just too powerful, even for Wall Street. The sight and the sounds and the remembrance of this child born so long ago changes all the rules. His very presence makes the glitter of our Christmas presents pale in comparison.

Kindness Update – Give Thanks!

“The greatest gift one can give is thanksgiving. In giving gifts, we give what we can spare, but in giving thanks we give ourselves.” – Br. David Steindl-Rast
This quote shared with me this week by my brother Bailey puts Thanksgiving in proper perspective, I think. It reminds me of the One who gave Himself for all of us – Thank you for giving, Jesus! If He lives in our hearts, thanksgiving should flow easily from our hearts to others because Jesus is definitely “enough”!
 
I am especially thankful to Bobbi Lambeth who recently shared some prayers and poems she had come across in some old books that were in a collection of sayings from their last church, Christ United Methodist of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. I could just see her smile when she wrote me this note, “Jim would say I throw nothing away – Amen!” I’m so glad you didn’t, Bobbi, because I really liked this recipe – it sounds like a recipe we can all use during this Season of Gratitude! Thanks for sharing!

MATTHEW AND KRISTI SCALES

MISSION IN UGANDA

 
On Sunday, November 24, Matthew and Kristi Scales shared their plans as they answer God’s call to mission in Uganda. They asked for the church family’s prayers and said they would appreciate any financial backing we could give them as they moved forward on this mission. They gave us a QR code where we can get regular updates via email. We can write to them also! They’d love to get to know our church family and answer any questions.
 
 
God led them to Mesa Global. This organization, based in Charlotte, NC is a 501c3 with over 400 missionaries globally. They exist to “bring all to the table,” by serving with the global church to equip local believers in ministry. This is accomplished by helping to plant churches, do evangelism, assist ministries in mercy and justice, so that local leaders are holistically formed to carry the gospel further.
 
During their talks with Mesa Global, it became clear that their ministry focus would be around agriculture simply because their entire family can do it. They have three children, who will also be going to Uganda. Kristi has dedicated her life to medicine but that could only be her ministry, farming they can all do. As they saw God’s lead toward agriculture as a mission, a small town in Uganda was brought up. In Bugiri, Uganda (around 6 hours drive from the capital) there is a ministry center called New Life Skills Ministry Center (https://hope58.org/). This center exists to transform lives and communities through equipping village pastors with vital biblical training, giving vulnerable village girls Christ centered life skills, and helping little ones get an excellent start to their educational journey in preschool.
 
On the property is a farm that has been neglected due to all the work needed from the missionaries already there (https://www.facebook.com/actis.mission). Their vision is for this farm to grow, not only in production of crops, but into a skills teaching center for the students and local community. They call this Farming God’s way. Just think about it, how much about farming points directly to the Gospel (the seed, the soil, the HARVEST Matthew 9:37).
 
Their past life experiences trained them for the tasks of this ministry. For example, years of practice with beef, cattle, hay and crop production. Their local church, Oakbrook, has graciously supported this calling for their family. Of course rural living in Union for years has given them the most experience of all! What a blessing from God because of this they feel uniquely qualified and called to reach out to this community in Uganda.

The Evangelism Committee is planning a Christmas Event in conjunction with Holiday on Main in McCormick. It will be held on Saturday, December 7 from 2-4pm. They are planning on having a professional Santa Claus in the Fellowship Hall, which will be decorated with child-friendly decorations. There will be children’s bells and a choir in the Fellowship Hall, where cookies and punch will be served.

Missionaries Coming This Sunday
This Sunday, November 24, Matthew, Kristi, Wiley, James and Wilbur Scales will be here at McCormick Methodist Church to share with us their plans as they answer God’s call to mission in Uganda. This family resides in my hometown of Union SC and I have known Matthew since he was a small child. His late father and mother have been friends of mine for many years. I am honored to bring them here and support them in their mission. I pray you will join me in offering them support in serving God and the people of Uganda.

Below is a letter from Matthew and Kristi.
 
Dear Friend,
 
In over 14 years of marriage my wife Kristi and I have pursued God’s will for our lives learning and growing in daily trades. For the past 2 years God has shown us that this was training for a mission. In January 2025 we are praying to launch into foreign missions in Bugiri, Uganda, Africa.
 
Why Uganda?
 
You can imagine our surprise when we first started to feel the call for foreign missions. Kristi had always felt a call to the nations, but I had a love and passion for our family farm that I felt truly would keep me here (Union, SC) for my entire life. As I read and studied the Bible I started to see how God truly sent some to speak of His love to those that were different in culture, social class, ethnicity (Mark 6:7-13). In Revelations (22:1-5) we see why, as all nations bow down in front of Jesus to praise Him. Our family truly believes this scene in Heaven will be astonishing, and felt called to help bring the nations into heaven with us.

Would you give financially to our family?
 
Kristi and I have already dedicated our time and money into the pursuit of this calling. We have attended seminars, trainings, taken a 15 week missions class (Perspective Class that we highly recommend). Balancing this has taught us that we cannot do this ministry alone and God has given us a wonderful support group through our families, church, and friends. While in Uganda our focus will be on ministry and we will not be able to work for a salary locally while there due to our visas. So we are asking for monthly supporters.

Our Goal is $8550 a month, and we would love to be able to enter the field by early next year.
 
Our Financial Breakdown
  • $3550 for personal expenses like housing cost, education for Scales kids ,electric, internet, phone, computer, savings for flights
  • $2000-insurance, health, car, evacuation for our family of 5, retirement, taxes
  • $1000-ministry fund, this goes directly to the center and any uses we need such as seed, equipment
  • $2000- organization fee (pays for Mesa Global to have staff that administer our benefits, budgeting, online giving), retirement (required by organization), emergency fund
 
This is the individual breakdown of what we need each month (rounding up to 9000 for math simplicity)
 
  • 2 people/organizations at 1000
  • 10 people /organizations at 500
  • 8 people/organizations at 250
 
Currently we are at 17% support raised.
 
This gift will be handled with complete integrity through the 501C3 Mesa Global Organization, while also under the accountability of external ministry overseers of Oakbrook Community Church. We have no problem being as transparent as you feel comfortable showing our budget, books, or other costs.

Our goal is to partner with mission minded people who are looking to form a support relationship that is overseen ultimately by our mighty God because we understand that everything is His anyway. We would love to be as involved in your life as you could be in ours on the mission field so please share your prayer requests, major life events with us, because we would love to pray for you, cheer when you cheer and cry with you when you need. The best part of this support raising journey has been talking with old friends, getting to know more about current friends, and meeting new friends.

HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF

SAMARITAN’S PURSE

LAST DATE FOR COLLECTION IS NOVEMBER 24

 
$5,865 was sent to Samaritan’s Purse from the MMC family. They continue to help folks hit by Hurricane Helene. At sites across North Carolina, they are doing tree work, mudding out homes, removing debris, and tarping roofs. Heavy equipment is being used to clear private driveways and private roads. In some areas, they are also offering water and potable water to the community.
 
It is not too late to contribute. Another check will be sent on November 24. Thank you for your generosity!

Kindness Update – Don’t Wait To Be Kind!

As we approach Thanksgiving, I can think of no better time to show kindness to others! If we need any further justification, here’s a quote about gratitude that might help from Melody Beattie, American author of self-help books on codependent relationships: “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.”
 
With that thought in mind, let us thank God for our many blessings that come from Him and spread that gratitude to others through acts of kindness! A grateful shout-out goes to Shirley Branson for sharing this beautiful message with me that reminds us that kindness begins with each one of us !

Website Kindness Entry: It’s just like God to always show up and help us when we need Him most! Recently when I had two back-to-back “whammies” in two consecutive days – the first being my credit card was compromised, and the bank had ordered me another one. On the very next day, when picking up a large order of turkey from Cracker Barrel in Greenwood, I was so proud of myself (since I did not have my credit card to use) for remembering to take a personal check to pay for the order. To my surprise, I learned that Cracker Barrel doesn’t accept personal checks! Behind me in line just happened to be an old friend who I had not seen in a very long time – she paid for the turkey with her credit card, and I made out my check to her – thank you, Jesus!

MOUNT VERNON, KENTUCY MISSION TRIP
DAVE AND PATTY KRIGER

Dave and Patty Kriger participated in a mission trip to Mount Vernon, Kentucky the week of October 27th. They served through Christian Appalachian Project (CAP) in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky. There was a total of 12 people on the team, and they served 2 homes. Their team replaced a deck and nine windows in a home. They helped a wonderful family and a team that has a heart for serving.
 
We also had a lot of team time in the evenings with devotions, music and sharing. They shared where they had seen God during our work days. They hope, if God is willing, they can serve again next year.

Just Stay in the Race
 
Mary Hollingsworth tells a story about the noted director of biblical epics, Cecil B. DeMille. When they began working on the movie Ben Hur, DeMille talked to Charlton Heston–the star of the movie–about the all-important chariot race at the end. He decided Heston should actually learn to drive the chariot himself, rather than just using a stunt double. Heston agreed to take chariot-driving lessons to make the movie as authentic as possible.
 
Learning to drive a chariot with horses four abreast, however, was no small matter. After extensive work and days of practice, Heston returned to the movie set and reported to DeMille.
 
“I think I can drive the chariot all right, Cecil,” said Heston, “but I’m not at all sure I can actually win the race.”
 
Smiling slightly, DeMille said, “Heston, you just stay in the race, and I’ll make sure you win.”
 
Those are the words of God to everyone through a time of tumultuous change: “John, Mary, Heather, you just stay in the race, and I’ll make sure you win.” Look for God’s hand. If you cannot see it in the event itself, look for it in the aftermath when you are putting your life back together. I promise you, God’s hand will be there.

A Word of Thanks and Appreciation from Your Pastor
 
Thanks to all of you I had a wonderful birthday last Sunday. You all made turning Medicare age much more enjoyable than I ever thought it could be. Your cards of love and monetary gifts are much appreciated. The lunch was delicious and a great time was had by everyone as we came together. I also received gifts such as a divine Cheesecake, Buckeyes that are addictive and even a cow quilt. I’m so thankful I told the SPRC chair I would extend my contract for 6 more months from June if you will have me. I have served bigger churches, fancier churches, and even richer churches, but this one has a love that is reflected in Jesus Christ. For this I am very thankful.

The Family Ministries Committee did a wonderful job of organizing a spaghetti luncheon to celebrate Nels’ birthday on Sunday.
 
The spaghetti, served with salad and garlic bread was delicious! And of course to top it all off, John Yerdon made one of his famous carrot cakes!!
 
Good job goes to John (and Sue) and Carol Tummons and all those who helped set up, cook and clean up!
 

HURRICANE HELENE RELIEF

SAMARITAN’S PURSE

LAST DATE FOR COLLECTION IS NOVEMBER 24

 
$5,865 was sent to Samaritan’s Purse from the MMC family. They continue to help folks hit by Hurricane Helene. At sites across North Carolina, they are doing tree work, mudding out homes, removing debris, and tarping roofs. Heavy equipment is being used to clear private driveways and private roads. In some areas, they are also offering water and potable water to the community.
 
It is not too late to contribute. Another check will be sent on November 24. Thank you for your generosity!

Kindness Update – Remembering Our Veterans!

 
Many of us remember Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” that has 60 adaptations for seasons like Easter, Christmas, etc. As we honor and remember on Veterans Day this week, I received an email from a dear friend in Augusta, Georgia that I would like to share with you just in case you haven’t heard it – it was new to me, and it is Big Geek Daddy’s Hallelujah Veterans. You may click on the link below to hear it, but first I just want to give you a little background on my friend.
 
Her name is Anne, and she is faithful to send me patriotic remembrances throughout the year. She was originally from France and met and married her husband Lloyd during his wartime military service many years ago. Lloyd died of throat cancer some years back following a valiant battle with the disease; during that time, he served as leader of a support group for laryngectomees in Augusta.
 
Although her command of the English language is limited, Anne uses her command of her computer to faithfully honor and remember her husband and American Veterans past and present and reminds others to do the same. I am so very thankful for her kind reminders. ELDER BASKET MINISTRY

BASKETS IN FELLOWSHIP HALL

THIS IS WEEK FOUR! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
 
At the November 11 service, the Prayers and Squares team presented hundreds of large prayer squares to be presented to the Native American Outreach Ministry, along with the filled laundry baskets! Lorna Hill thanked the Prayers and Squares team for all their hard work!
 
 
“Elder Baskets” are plastic laundry baskets filled with non-perishable items, which are given to elderly Native Americans in need. Many Native Americans live well below the poverty line. The Committee on Native American Ministries give these baskets to help them through particularly trying times.
 
MMC has joined the ministry, under the direction of Lorna Hill. The church family is asked to bring items and put them in the laundry baskets, located along the back wall of the Fellowship Hall.
 
Here are the suggested items. You can bring as many items you want any week, but, remember, they need to be delivered by Nov 17.
 

Donations for the Native American Elder Baskets:

Week #4: Nov. 17 – Laundry Detergent, Dish Detergent, Paper Towels & Trash Bags.

You are welcome to donate other non-perishable items, such as coffee, coffee mugs, and granola/breakfast bars. Seasonal candies are also greatly appreciated.

By the time you receive this message, we should be learning who will be the President of the United States along with other leaders. We have in our midst both Election Day and the week after Veteran’s Day. I offer you these prayers that I found and edited for your use. Yes, we need to pray for our nation that stands divided and angry. Our Veteran’s from many wars gave their all that our nation can be free and great. We have below three prayers; one for our Veteran’s written in first person so you can pray it. Then I give you a prayer by President Roosevelt on D-Day to remind you how our leaders should continue to turn to God for guidance for our nation. Lastly, there is a prayer you can pray for our nation to find healing in these times of divisiveness.
 
 
A Prayer for Veteran’s Day
 
Loving and Living God,
 
I know that no one understands sacrifice more than You. This Veteran’s Day I am reminded of those who sacrificially served our country. You know every one of them by name, and know the hardships that they faced.
 
Your word says that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends. Our veterans have lived out this very truth by risking their lives for the protection and peace of our nation.
 
I want to thank You for every man and woman who gave their all in service to this country of ours. It is no small task to train with such discipline and to step out into the battlefield. Yet, so many bravely filled in the gap, and marched forward on behalf of our people.
 
In protecting our nation, they have given their lives to protect our freedoms. Thank You for their courage and bravery. May they know how deeply grateful we are for them, and for their courageousness that will forever hold a place in our memories, hearts and history. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation. It has come to pass with success thus far.
 
And so, in this poignant hour, I ask you to join with me in prayer:
Almighty God: Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity.
 
Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.
They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard. For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces. Success may not come with rushing speed, but we shall return again and again; and we know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph.

Prayer For A Country Divided
Father, I come before You with a heavy heart, burdened by the divisions that plague our nation. I lift up our divided country to You, knowing that You alone can heal and restore what is broken. Help us, Lord, to find unity and reconciliation in the midst of our differences.
 
Your Word reminds us in Ephesians 4:3 (NIV), “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” I pray, Lord, that You would infuse us with a spirit of humility, empathy, and understanding, enabling us to bridge the divides that separate us. Grant us the wisdom to listen with open hearts and the courage to seek common ground.
 
Lord, heal the wounds of prejudice, hatred, and mistrust that have caused such division among us. Replace bitterness with forgiveness, anger with love, and division with unity. Help us to see one another through Your eyes, recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every individual.
 
Father, I pray for our leaders, that You would guide them in their decision-making and give them the strength to pursue justice and righteousness for all. Inspire them to work towards the well-being and unity of our nation, setting aside personal interests for the greater good.
 
Lord, pour out Your Spirit upon us, filling us with Your love, grace, and compassion. May we be instruments of reconciliation and healing, seeking peace and understanding in our words and actions. Help us to build bridges that bring us closer together as a nation.
 
I pray for the healing and unity of our divided country. May Your love prevail, and may we stand as a shining example of what can be achieved when we come together in harmony. Amen.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – When God Steps In, Miracles Happen!

Sue and Mitch are shown above at a luau they attended on their birthday. Standing with the MC, they had just been announced as the couple there who were married the longest – 61 years! They received fresh flower leis and lots of applause!
 
How wonderfully amazing and humbling it is to experience God stepping in and performing one of His miracles! That’s just what happened for Sue and Mitch Mitchell who have just returned from their recent birthday trip to Hawaii. The two were there to celebrate their mutual October 23 birthdays when Sue had to have emergency surgery in Honolulu All went well with the procedure, and they were even able to celebrate their birthdays together, as you see above! For family and friends thousands of miles away, many, many prayers were answered! What a beautiful testament this is to us that “with God, all things are possible!” – Matthew 19: 26. Thank you, Sue, for sharing the following kindness entries from your very emotional experience:
 
“While in the hospital in Honolulu, I received compassionate and loving care. At the end of a shift, I wished my nurse a “blessed day”. She told me how much she liked that. This nurse had lived in South Carolina while her husband was in the military. She told me that she hadn’t heard those special words since leaving the state!”
 
“I checked into the hospital less than a week before my and Mitch’s mutual birthday. I was having unscheduled surgery. The surgeons and staff worked hard to get my surgery and release before our birthday. As we were leaving, we were handed a birthday card. It was full of individual greetings and signatures from the nurses. We were really touched!”

Stephen Ministry Corner

Another point on the Stephen Ministry Caregiver’s Compass is Skilled. Stephen Ministers go through 50 hours of training before they are commissioned. This training involves subjects such as “The Art of Listening,” “Feelings: Yours, Mine, and Ours,” “Boundaries,” and “Confidentiality.”
 
Becoming “Skilled” is a moving and enlightening process. We do it so that we can provide the best care possible for our Care Receivers.

They were still trying to clean up from hurricane Debby when Helene came through. The Edisto River, with several small rivers running into it, had severe flooding.

Our speaker for November 12 will Wayne Wehresberger. He will be speaking on the history of McCormick during the Revolutionary War near port Charlotte. He will take us back 250 years as he shares the stories from that time period!
 
Don Smith will be doing the devotion. Our meal will be provided by Old Country South with support from Dale Tarrant and Sam Krotzer.
 
At our meeting, we will discuss our donations to local charities like Martha Croswell’s Crossroads and St Andrews food distribution. We will also discuss fund raising since the October Craft Show/Cookie Factory had to be cancelled.
 
Note that our meeting is on the second Tuesday in November. This is because there will be voting in our Fellowship Hall on Election Day, the first Tuesday.

The Evangelism Committee is planning a Christmas Event in conjunction with Holiday on Main in McCormick. It will be held on Saturday, December 7 from 2-4pm. They are planning on having a professional Santa Claus in the Fellowship Hall, which will be decorated with child-friendly decorations. Cookies and Punch will be served.
 
They are looking for an inflatable Christmas decoration that children (of all ages) would enjoy. Please contact Janice Tipton if you have one or two.
 
There will be several different church groups presenting their music in the sanctuary.
 
They will be calling on the church family for cookies and possibly some decorations.

A Message from the Saints – With this Urban Legend
 
There’s an urban legend about the University of Chicago Divinity School. Each year it is said they have what is called “Baptist Day.” On this day each one is to bring a lunch to be eaten outdoors in a grassy picnic area. Every “Baptist Day” the school would invite one of the greatest minds to lecture in the theological education center. One year they invited Dr. Paul Tillich. Dr.Tillich spoke for two and one-half hours proving that the resurrection of Jesus was false. He quoted scholar after scholar and book after book. He concluded that since there was no such thing as the historical resurrection the religious tradition of the church was groundless, emotional mumbo-jumbo, because it was based on a relationship with a risen Jesus, who, in fact, never rose from the dead in any literal sense. He then asked if there were any questions.
 
After about 30 seconds, an old, dark skinned preacher with a head of short-cropped, woolly white hair stood up in the back of the auditorium.”Docta’ Tillich, I got one question,” he said as all eyes turned toward him. He reached into his sack lunch and pulled out an apple and began eating it.
 
“Docta Tillich.. CRUNCH, MUNCH “My question is a simple question, …CRUNCH, MUNCH…”Now, I ain’t never read them books you read ..CRUNCH, MUNCH…”and I can’t recite the Scriptures in the original Greek
 
…CRUNCH, MUNCH …” I don’t know nothin’ about Niebuhr and Heidegger
 
…CRUNCH, MUNCH…He finished the apple. “All I wanna know is: This apple I just ate, was it bitter or sweet?”
 
Dr. Tillich paused for a moment and answered in exemplary scholarly fashion: “I cannot possibly answer that question, for I haven’t tasted your apple.” The white-haired preacher dropped the core of his apple into his crumpled paper bag, looked up at Dr. Tillich and said calmly, “Neither have you tasted my Jesus.”
 
The 1,000 plus in attendance could not contain themselves. The auditorium erupted with applause and cheers. Dr. Tillich thanked his audience and promptly left the platform.
 
Have you tasted Jesus? As Saints we offer this message. Jesus has risen…and he ‘s coming back one day! Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Sharing Across The Line!

I recently ran across a copy of an old poem I saved many years ago, mainly because it covers a period of my life that I like to remember, that you may have fond memories of as well. My mother had a ringer-type washing machine on the back porch until she later upgraded to an automatic – but she never did have a clothes dryer. With eight children, there were very few days that the line wasn’t filled! She and the mother next door were close – and our families looked out for each other – and their sharing across their lines created a special feeling of kindness and caring that I thank God for. While we are aware of saving energy today, I think most of us wouldn’t give up the luxury of our clothes dryers – however, I do still have a clothesline and use it from time to time!
 
The Clothesline

A clothesline was a news forecast, to neighbors passing by.
There were no secrets you could keep, when clothes were hung to dry.
It also was a friendly link, for neighbors always knew,
If company had stopped on by, to spend a night or two.
For then you’d see the fancy sheets and towels upon the line;
You’d see the company tablecloths, with intricate design.
The line announced a baby’s birth, to folks who lived inside,
As brand new infant clothes, were hung so carefully with pride.
The ages of the children, could so readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed, you’d know how much they’d grown.
It also told when illness struck, as extra sheets were hung;
Then night-clothes, and a bathrobe too, haphazardly were strung.
It said “Gone on vacation now”, when lines hung limp and bare.
It told “We’re back!” when full lines sagged, with not an inch to spare.
New folks in town were scorned upon, if washing was dingy grey,
As neighbors raised their brows, and looked disgustedly away.
But clotheslines now are of the past, for dryers make work less,
Now what goes on inside a home, is anybody’s guess.
I really miss that way of life; it was a friendly sign,
When neighbors knew each other best, by what was on the line.

MMC Supports Lakelands Fellowship of Christian Athletes

A portion of Outreach Missions funds in the budget of McCormick Methodist Church are designated to support the efforts of the Lakelands Fellowship of Christian Athletes whose organization includes schools in McCormick County. The major fundraiser of this organization, a celebration dinner, was held on Tuesday, October 22 in Greenwood. These MMC members attended the dinner to present the church’s contribution to this ministry. Not included in the picture but also attending the dinner were Rico, Kristen, and Josiah Salliewhite. The program included a very inspirational testimony by Sarah Roberts, coach’s daughter and coach’s wife and mother of five, who shared from her passion for connecting women in sports to Jesus.
 
The Bible tells us, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”
 
Thank you to those who already pledged! The finance committee will use the figures to work on the 2025 budget.
It is never too late to pledge! If you have not filled out a commitment card, there are extras in the office.
 
You may want to consider using Vanco to make your donations. You can set it up to pay automatically, which is wonderful, especially when you are away or unable to attend in person. You get a message from them when it makes the donation. You can stop or change the amount at any time. It is secure and part of our website.

ELDER BASKET MINISTRY

Several Native tribes in South Carolina counties were hit hard with the recent storms; Spartanburg, Dorchester, Charleston, Colleton, Santee, Lauren’s and Edisto are still working to recover. They were still trying to clean up from hurricane Debby when Helene came through. The Edisto River, with several small rivers running into it, had severe flooding.
 
“Elder Baskets” are plastic laundry baskets filled with non-perishable items, which are given to elderly Native Americans in need. Many Native Americans live well below the poverty line. The Committee on Native American Ministries give these baskets to help them through particularly trying times.
 
MMC will join the ministry, under the direction of Lola Rek and Lorna Hill, starting on October 27. The church family is asked to bring items and put them in the laundry baskets, located along the back wall of the Fellowship Hall.
Here are the suggested items. You can bring as many items you want any week, but, remember, they need to be delivered by Nov 17.
 
Donations for the Native American Elder Baskets:
Week #1: Oct. 27 – Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Toilet Paper, Shampoo, Bar Soaps
Week #2: Nov 3 – Cans of Meats, Canned Vegetables, Peanut Butter, Pasta, Fruit cups, Spaghetti and pasta sauce
Week #3: Nov 10 – Soup, Evaporated Milk, Dried Beans & Rice, Oatmeal, Instant Potatoes
Week #4: Nov. 17 – Laundry Detergent, Dish Detergent, Paper Towels & Trash Bags.

ALL SAINTS DAY
NOVEMBER 3

MMC will be celebrating All Saints Day on Sunday, November 3.
 
On November 3, All Saints Day, we will call out the names of all members that have passed away since last All Saints Day and light candles for them. Family members are invited to participate in the candle lighting. There will be communion.
 
On All Saints Day, we recognize that we are part of a giant choir singing the same song. It is the song Jesus taught his disciples; a tune that has resonated for more than 2,000 years; a melody sung in glory and on the earth. Our great privilege is to add our voices to this chorus.

This week I share with you a lesson on help. There are two sides to this lesson. You will learn that sometimes we are called to help others, and we must learn when we need to ask for help for ourselves. Both are important. Read Below.
 
I Heard My Brother Crying
 
James W. Moore tells a story that all of need to read.
 
Some years ago in a small village in the Midwest, a little twelve-year old girl named Terri was babysitting her little brother. Terri walked outside to check the mail. As she turned back from the mailbox, she couldn’t believe her eyes. The house was on fire. So very quickly the little house was enveloped in flames.
 
Terri ran as fast as she could into the flaming house only to find her baby brother trapped by a burning rafter which had fallen and pinned him to the floor. Hurriedly, Terri worked to free her brother. She had trouble getting him loose as the flames were dancing around their heads. Finally, she freed him. She picked him up and quickly took him outside and revived him just as the roof of the house caved in.
 
By this time, firemen were on the scene and the neighbors had gathered outside the smoldering remains of the house. The neighbors had been too frightened to go inside or to do anything to help, and they were tremendously impressed with the courage of the twelve-year old girl. They congratulated her for her heroic efforts and said, “Terri, you are so very brave. Weren’t you scared? What were you thinking about when you ran into the burning house?” I love Terri’s answer. She said, “I wasn’t thinking about anything. I just heard my little brother crying.”
 
Let me ask you something? How long has it been? How long has it been since you heard your brother or sister crying? How long has it been since you stopped and did something about it?
 
James Moore teaches us that we are to listen to those around us that need our help.
 
Now, let’s look at the other side of the issue,,,,,
 
Asking for Help
 
Doctor Fred Collier, a retired physician tells this story about his youth.
 
He was a medical student in the Army Specialized Training Corps in 1945 when World War II ended. He was from a Kansas family that didn’t have the kind of money he needed to complete medical school on his own. And so when he mustered out of the army, he had no idea how he’d ever finish school, if indeed he’d ever finish it all.
 
One day he happened to pick up a copy of a magazine in a barber shop. One of the articles talked about the kindness and compassion of Eleanor Roosevelt, whose husband, President Franklin Roosevelt had died just a few months before.
 
That article planted a seed in Fred’s mind. He went to the local library and with the help of the librarian found Mrs. Roosevelt’s home address. Then he sat down and composed a letter telling her about his plight. He wrote it and rewrote until he had it exactly the way he wanted it.
 
When he put the letter in an envelope and dropped it in the mailbox, even his young wife wondered if it was worth the time and the postage he’d spent on it.
 
To Fred’s amazement, Mrs. Roosevelt agreed to meet him. When the meeting ended, she promised to help him. In the months and years ahead Fred got checks through Mrs. Roosevelt from a variety of sources, including her own personal checks. Fred, in turn, kept her informed of his progress and sent her copies of all his term papers. Her secretary said later that she always read them with great interest.
 
Later Mrs. Roosevelt visited the couple in their sparsely furnished apartment. The owner of the apartment nearly collapsed when he recognized the famous visitor.
 
When Fred finally finished Medical School he told Mrs. Roosevelt that he didn’t know how he would ever be able to repay her. She said that repayment wasn’t necessary nor desirable. Then she added “I will be adequately repaid if, when you are financially secure someday, you help out someone else who is truly deserving, as you were.”
 
Doctor Fred Collier reached out for help and he received it. As did blind Bartimaeus. It is a hard thing to do, this asking, a difficult thing, a humbling thing, but there are times when we all need help, times when we must turn to our parents once again for help, or to our children. Sometimes it is to the church. Sometimes to God.
 
Our Church is a place where we can do both. We help and love others. Yet, when we have given out and our own needs go unmet, we receive love and help from others. The balance here must be achieved by every Church person.

Kindness Update – A Modern-Day Good Samaritan!

This week’s kindness story is reprinted from a Good News Network entry dated Oct. 11, 2024. Touching our hearts, it restores our faith in the goodness of mankind in a big way!
A Massachusetts senior lost an envelope containing $12,000 at a supermarket, but just as there seemed to be no hope of finding it, the kindness of a Good Samaritan reunited the woman with her life savings. Returning home from grocery shopping at the local Market Basket in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, 71-year-old Ha’s heart dropped—the envelope of cash was nowhere to be seen. Speaking very little English, Ha called her nephew Truong Huynh for help.
 
Huynh, 55, took his aunt back to Market Basket to look for the cash, but despite checking everywhere she had gone, their search yielded nothing. Arriving at the help desk, the two got in touch with manager Dan Desfosses, who said he would check the security camera footage to see if they could locate where and when she lost the envelope. Giving up, they headed back to their car. Suddenly Desfosses and another man came running out to meet them, with the manager explaining that this man had just brought the envelope with every last dollar accounted for to the management desk.
 
“We were so happy, we almost cried,” said Huynh, adding that he asked to take a photo of the man with Desfosses. “He showed honor,” Huynh said. “Many people wouldn’t pass that test.” The ‘he’ in question was a man called Skip, whose girlfriend worked at the Market Basket. “I don’t know if there’s a lot of people that would do that,” Desfosses added. “It shows you what he’s made of… It shows you there are truly some good people in this world.”
 
Once home, Ha decided to return to Market Basket the next day and give a cash reward to Mr. Skip. She left $300 with his girlfriend as he wasn’t there at the time.
 
“It takes a special kind of person to do something so honest and selfless, and Skip, you are a true example of integrity and compassion,” Huynh wrote. “Thank you, Skip — you’ve touched more lives than you know today.”
 
Website Kindness Entry: Several times during our recovery from Helene, when I went into convenience stores to pay for gas, I was given a complimentary drink – at one, I was even told to come back the next morning when they’d be serving free breakfast to everyone!

HOBO STEW PARTY

Great weather, smiling faces, light breezes, beautiful blue skies with puffy white clouds and what else…oh yes COWS!!! Our first HOBO stew to raise awareness and food for our own church pantry was a HUGE success!! We had about 46 people who ventured all the way out of town to the “Meyers Farm” for this activity. Each of us brought a can of vegetables for the pot to share among ourselves and brought a bag of food for our church pantry. Oh, of course we had desserts, along with a bonfire for the chill later in the evening!
 
It was loads of fun and our entire Church family wants to thank Mike Dunn, “the cook” and Maxine Dunn “the brain child” along with Pat & Brad Meyers, our gracious hosts. I know they had no electricity for 2 weeks and a lot of storm damage to clean up for us before hand. Thank you all as we had a wonderful time and a special thanks to Dave & Patty Kriger, I did see Dave in there working on that stew…Patty…hmmm????? LOL
 
Thanks for attending and we will look forward to another HOBO Stew evening out!

ELDER BASKET MINISTRY
OCTOBER 27 – NOVEMBER 17

Several Native tribes in South Carolina counties were hit hard with the recent storms; Spartanburg, Dorchester, Charleston, Colleton, Santee, Lauren’s and Edisto are still working to recover. They were still trying to clean up from hurricane Debby when Helene came through. The Edisto River, with several small rivers running into it, had severe flooding.
 
On October 27, we will begin collecting items for “Elder Baskets”.
 
“Elder Baskets” are plastic laundry baskets filled with non-perishable items, which are given to elderly Native Americans in need. Many Native Americans live well below the poverty line. The Committee on Native American Ministries give these baskets to help them through particularly trying times.
 
MMC will join the ministry, under the direction of Lola Rek and Lorna Hill, starting on October 27. The church family is asked to bring items and put them in the laundry baskets, located along the back wall of the Fellowship Hall.
Here are the suggested items. You can bring as many items you want any week, but, remember, they need to be delivered by Nov 17.
 
Donations for the Native American Elder Baskets:
Week #1: Oct. 27 – Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Toilet Paper, Shampoo, Bar Soaps
Week #2: Nov 3 – Cans of Meats, Canned Vegetables, Peanut Butter, Pasta, Fruit cups, Spaghetti and pasta sauce
Week #3: Nov 10 – Soup, Evaporated Milk, Dried Beans & Rice, Oatmeal, Instant Potatoes
Week #4: Nov. 17 – Laundry Detergent, Dish Detergent, Paper Towels & Trash Bags.
 
You are welcome to donate other non-perishable items, such as coffee, coffee mugs, and granola/breakfast bars. Seasonal candies are also greatly appreciated.

ALL SAINTS DAY
NOVEMBER 3

MMC will be celebrating All Saints Day on Sunday, November 3.
 
The All Saints Banner is located in the sanctuary for you to tie a bell to honor someone who has passed away. If you are not able to get to the church prior to November 3 and would like a bell tied for a loved one, email Donna Hutto  and she will do it for you.
 
On November 3, All Saints Day, we will celebrate with communion. We will call out the names of all members that have passed away since last All Saints Day and light candles for them. Family members are invited to participate in the candle lighting.
 
On All Saints Day, we recognize that we are part of a giant choir singing the same song. It is the song Jesus taught his disciples; a tune that has resonated for more than 2,000 years; a melody sung in glory and on the earth. Our great privilege is to add our voices to this chorus.

Due to the cancellation of the RightNow Media training on September 29th caused by Hurricane Helene, we have rescheduled the training for Sunday, November 3rd, immediately following the service. The training will be held in the fellowship hall. All Sunday school classes will be canceled that day to allow everyone to attend. Join us for some treats and beverages, and stay for the training! We look forward to seeing you there as we learn how to use this valuable resource together.
 

CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE

DECEMBER 7 2-4PM FELLOWSHIP HALL

The Evangelism Committee is planning a Christmas Event in conjunction with Holiday on Main in McCormick. It will be held on Saturday, December 7 from 2-4pm. They are planning on having a professional Santa Claus in the Fellowship Hall, which will be decorated with child-friendly decorations. Cookies and Punch will be served.
 
They are looking for an inflatable Christmas decoration that children (of all ages) would enjoy. Please contact Janice Tipton if you have one or two.
 
There will be several different church groups presenting their music in the sanctuary.
 
They will be calling on the church family for cookies and possibly some decorations.

Laity Sunday 2024
 
Laity Sunday celebrates the ministry of all Christians as they love God and neighbor. As God’s people grow in grace to become disciples in the Church and community, we gather with others and connect all to God’s saving love in Jesus Christ. So, on Laity Sunday (October 20, 2024), we continue to lift up God’s call to all who follow the way of Jesus and lead others to him – specifically as we consider what it means to cherish/protect what has been entrusted to us: our witness to grace at work in every life.
 
Laity Sunday is a day set aside to remember and lift up a constant reality: the priesthood and ministry of all. Everyone is invited to share in God’s community of healing togetherness and world-repairing love.
 
Laity Sunday is a special Sunday “to celebrate the ministry of all Christians” (2016 Book of Discipline, ¶ 264.2). Usually observed on the third Sunday in October (in 2024, October 20), Laity Sunday is one way we express the core Christian conviction that all are called to participate in God’s mission to “abolish death” and bring life to light through the good news of Jesus.
 
Methodism, in all its roots, has a long history celebrating and recognizing the ministry of the laity. In the early days of American Methodism, the laity served and maintained congregations between visits of the circuit riders. Today, lay people are the front line of daily ministry at the workplace, in the home and within the community.

Kindness Update – Kindness and A Father’s Love!

This week’s Kindness story was one I saw on television and just had to look up online. I found it on the Fox Weather website. I share it because it reminded me of our Heavenly Father’s great love for each one of us!
 
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – A small red road reflector, a seemingly insignificant object, has become a beacon of hope for a South Carolina family in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This humble pavement marker, once merely a tool for visibility, now holds a profound meaning. It is a testament to a father’s unwavering determination and the kindness of strangers.
 
Helene’s destructive force sought to sever the bond between David Jones and his daughter, Elizabeth. Yet their love proved to be more resilient than any storm. Faced with the devastation, Jones embarked on a perilous 17-mile journey, crawling through debris, scaling obstacles and defying the wrath of nature to fulfill his most sacred duty as a father: to walk his daughter down the aisle.
With no internet or cell service, Jones and his wife were completely unaware of the devastation that lay ahead. What should have been a simple hour-and-a-half drive to just over the Tennessee border turned into a grueling seven-hour journey, filled with detours and delays.
 
At that point, the state troopers were stopping everybody, getting them off the interstate and saying, “You can’t go any further, the bridges are out,” Jones recalled. When he asked about walking, the troopers advised him to return to his car and spend the night there. “I said, ‘I’m sorry. You don’t understand. My daughter’s getting married in Johnson City at 11 o’clock, and I’m going to be there to walk her down the aisle.” The troopers were sympathetic but were unable to allow him to continue. After they left the roadblock, Jones thought, “This was my chance,” as he grabbed his backpack and threw in his shaving kit along with a couple of changes of underwear and socks. Equipped with a windbreaker and a cell phone light, Jones began his ascent up Temple Hill Road.
 
“After about 5.5 hours of hitchhiking and hiking, I made it downtown by 7:30 a.m.,” he said. “I was able to clean up and then get to my daughter’s wedding on time.” Throughout his journey, his daughter had no idea what he was going through due to no cell service and the father had initially let everyone know not to let his daughter know their dilemma on her special day – they would tell her later.
 
Walking the last part of his journey, Jones grabbed a life-saving road reflector. “I apologize if I grabbed it from your driveway, whoever it was, I will replace it for you,” he stressed. “I had a good Samaritan pull up in a white truck when it looked like I might be a little late, and he drove me out the rest of the way.”
 
“Through God’s divine intervention,” Jones said, “everything fell into place for the joyous occasion.” In the end, his journey had not only brought him to his daughter’s wedding but had also strengthened their bond in a way that would last a lifetime!

Stewardship Sunday-Loving the Lord and His Church
 
This Sunday we will celebrate our commitment to God and His Church by offering our estimate of giving cards for 2025. Logistically, this is essential for our Church Council to plan responsible usage of our resources for our ministry this coming year. We renew our membership vows to support our church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service and our witness. Your gifts do so much more than just paying utilities and the church staff. Your giving empowers us to love our community and one another. We can feed the hungry. Help those without resources to have better lives and offer everyone the love, grace and salvation through Jesus. Your talents and service empower us to become the hands and feet of Christ by touching the lives of those around us and nurturing them through good days and bad. Your wisdom gives our Church the willingness to heed God’s call and challenge to build our Church and the Kingdom of God.
 
We are so thankful that God has blessed us with so much abundance that we can serve our Church and make or community a better place by sharing Christ. It is an honor and privilege to surrender to Christ what we have as we realize that all we really need comes through Him.
 
In the past 6 weeks, we have studied how generous living brings joy to all for both the giver and the receiver. We have much to do as we repair our church, preach the Word, save souls, feed the hungry, love our community, support victims of hurricanes, love the children of this community, take care of the disadvantaged and seek out the new challenges for ministry that God gives us.
 
See you in Church or online this Sunday as we set our ministry for 2025 into motion – all to God’s glory. The time is now to put our gifts in the game! This past week I have watched our Church love those without power and food. We have taken the sick to the hospitals and offered services of assistance to those unable to help themselves.

Mitchells Share From Their Mission Experience In Panama

(NOTE: Sue is wearing an authentic native dress!)
 
At the September 20 meeting of the 24:7 Small Group, Sue and Mitch Mitchell presented a wonderful slide presentation from their 8 years as missionaries in Panama, specifically in the Town of Bouquete. Earlier this year, they participated with Missionary Assist Panama assisting with providing breakfast cleanup, preparing and delivering meals to the Medical Mission Team that was there in Casa Palmira. Though it was a little tiring and stressful at times, they say that God helped them to get through it and they are hopeful to have that opportunity again next year. Sue and Mitch have a special passion for the work they have been able to do on the reservations, children’s home ministry, etc. and they have quite often shared their personal skills and abilities (i.e. Sue with education and Mitch with technical/electrical needs) to their ministry. They are especially grateful to their Church Family at McCormick Methodist Church for their contributions to their mission work. The members of 24:7 Small Group are especially proud of the mission work of one of its own members – Sue – and we are hopeful that the Mitchells might one day make this presentation to our congregation!

There are so many personal stories – both sad and heartwarming – of that period from 4 a.m. until daylight; I would like to share mine. Jessica and I were awakened when our power went off around 4 a.m. Soon after we felt a thundering jolt to our house! I looked out our back windows but, of course, saw nothing but darkness – from then until sunrise, I sat up, wanting so badly to see outside but at the same time dreading what I might see. As the ravaging wind and rain continued, I sat and prayed, recalling comforting scriptures. A sudden feeling of comfort came over me when I thought of the quote on the t-shirt I just happened to be wearing – “In waters deep, my faith will stand.” As Jesus calmed the storm for the disciples in Mark 4: 35-41, so also, He does that for us! He brought Jessica and me safely through the storm. The next morning, we saw two trees on the back of our house and garage as well as a couple uprooted in the back yard. They are still there, and we still cannot go down the steps into the backyard, but the insurance adjuster is coming Wednesday! Thanks be to God who is still watching over us! We are so thankful for that!
 
Speaking of heartwarming stories, a special “thank you” goes out to Carol Myers for sharing the following email she received in a recent newsfeed – it’s even from one of our “community neighbors”! – “Today, we’re sharing a story from reader Cindi S. in McCormick, SC : “Being caught in the direct path of Hurricane Helene, experiencing damage from tropical force winds and extended power outages, my household gathered what food we could salvage, loaded the car and headed north. Unaware of broad reaching storm damage, we were unable to find refuge or gas to continue our search. Stranded in Gaffney, SC, three separate good Samaritans rescued us by contributing gas cans, funnels, and gas to get us on our way! None of them would take money for their efforts. Thank you to these nameless angels for restoring my faith that good people still exist.”
 
Website Kindness Entry: When our power was restored after the storm there were still several major electrical appliances that would not work. We were able to contact a local electrician who came late that day when he was finished with all of his calls. After 30 minutes in our breaker box, he had restored all of them! When I reached for my checkbook to pay him, he told me to make it out for “zero” – – just one kind story of so many that are being told following Hurricane Helene!

  • Rinse and save the can. You will need it to eat out of later. Paper bowls will also be available.
  • Bring a koozie for the hot can.
  • Bring a lawn chair.
  • Beverages that will be available are tea, lemonade and water. If another beverage is desired, please feel free to bring it!
  • Sign up in the fellowship hall.

DECEMBER 7 2-4PM FELLOWSHIP HALL

The Evangelism Committee is planning a Christmas Event in conjunction with Holiday on Main in McCormick. It will be held on Saturday, December 7 from 2-4pm. They are planning on having a professional Santa Claus in the Fellowship Hall, which will be decorated with child-friendly decorations. Cookies and Punch will be served.
 
They are looking for an inflatable Christmas decoration that children (of all ages) would enjoy. Please contact Janice Tipton if you have one or two.
 
There will be several different church groups presenting their music in the sanctuary.
 
They will be calling on the church family for cookies and possibly some decorations.

Spoons and Ladles
 
Last Tuesday, we hosted the Bells Across America celebration of our US Constitution. After the service, some of our guests asked me why we had pots and ladles on the altar table. I told them we were studying how to live generously and that spoons were for serving ourselves and ladles are for serving others. I then added we should put down our spoons and pick up our ladles. I think our guests got the point about our church. We are here to share the love of Jesus with others.
 
A ladle and a spoon are both perfectly good utensils. They are just designed for different purposes. The spoon is a single sized utensil that allows you to efficiently and effectively serve yourself. The ladle is a larger tool that is better served being used to put larger helpings on others plates. It’s designed for serving others.
 
Yes, you can serve others with a spoon, but it’s not efficient. Yes, you can serve yourself with the ladle, but that’s not its purpose.
 
The challenge, I see, is that most people are walking around life with only a spoon. We only seek to serve ourselves. We see the world through the lens of “looking out for number one.” It causes us to be myopic and selfish. There are certainly times when we need to serve ourselves, but it’s not a rewarding long-term way to go through life.
 
Instead, today I encourage you to at least take the ladle with you. Be on the lookout for reasons and opportunities to provide others value. Look for reasons to share and serve. It might be as simple as doing your job in a generous way…or it might be paying for someone’s lunch. Whatever. Just look for a way to set down your spoon for a bit today…and serve.

A Summary of the last episode of Living Generously

Frank’s journey to understanding generous living continues. He is affected by his dream and determined to be more generous. An interaction with Re leads Frank to the soup kitchen, and Frank is encouraged to do more than pull out his check book. He finds himself working in the kitchen. Serving stretches Frank, and he finds that he has much to learn about helping people.
 
The soup kitchen gives Frank a taste of generous living and Re imparts wisdom that by becoming poor, we are following Christ’s example. Jesus calls us to become poor and serve others so that we can show them God’s love. And the question we are left with is, “Are you serving yourself, or are you serving others?”

Many thanks to Donna and Ron Hutto and their many helpers for a wonderful service and picnic! The weather was perfect, the fellowship was special, and the food was superb!
 
Debbie Wissinger welcomed everyone, Peggy Thomas did a wonderful job of the Prelude and playing for the hymns, Gordie Waine and Carol Tummons sang beautiful solos, Patsy Wilson shared the scripture, Lindy Stahlman led us in singing and it all come together with Rev. Nels Ledwell sharing the Message, “Loving Like David”. MMC family felt blessed this morning!
 
Sue Wurtzbacher took lots of pictures which will be uploaded to the “album” on our website next week when Rick returns. If you have any photos you’d like to share, send them in! We will have the link to the photos in the next BLAST.
 
Donna and Ron want to thank all those who helped. They were thrilled to see how many showed up on Saturday morning, and they had many helpers on Sunday. Thank you, MMC family!
 

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – “Let Us Never Forget!”


A big “Thank You” goes to Judi Bouchard this week for sharing this photo of the MISSING MAN TABLE she set up in the River Grille Foyer at SLV in observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. A message went out on Friday, September 20 to residents inviting them to visit and take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of those military members who have yet to make it home.
 
The message also included the significance of the elements of the table as follows:
 
• The Table is ROUND — to show our continual, everlasting concern for our missing men
• The Tablecloth is WHITE — symbolizing the purity of their motives when answer the call to duty.
• A Single RED ROSE reminds us of the life of each of the Missing Americans, & their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, awaiting answers.
• The Vase is tied with YELLOW ribbon, symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing.
• A slice of lemon is to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured & missing in a foreign land.
• A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.
• The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us AND those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.
• The candle serves as a beacon of hope for their eventual return.
• The glass is inverted to symbolize their inability to share a toast.
• The chair is empty — they are Missing.
 
In addition, there was a link to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency to learn more about the organization. As a part of their commitment to “fulfill our nation’s promise”, POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed each year on the third Friday of September throughout the U.S. and around the world. On their website, it is reported that over 1,200 lives have been accounted for between 2017 and 2023 which is quite impressive, but one can only imagine the magnitude of their task.
 
Several years ago, Jessica and I saw a similar MISSING MAN TABLE in a dessert shoppe in neighboring Edgefield. Having never seen one before, my natural reaction was to pause, reflect, and breathe a prayer of gratitude for the sacrifices made on my behalf as well as for family members of those who never made it home. Judi says simply, “it’s all about awareness”, and she is so right. The MISSING MAN TABLE certainly gets the job done so that we never forget!

The Stewardship Committee has written a letter to the church family, which will be ready this Sunday for pick-up. There will also be a commitment card included. Take the time to read the letter and then prayerfully consider how God is calling you to respond on the commitment card.
 
Stewardship Sunday is October 13. Meanwhile, we will see more episodes of “Living Generously” and learn more about true generosity. As the letter states, “Here at McCormick Methodist Church we want to be faithful stewards of all that God has given us. We want to empower you to use all of your resources to show your love for Christ because he loved you with everything He had first.”

We need 7 or 8 (or more) to help with set up on Saturday morning at 7:30am. You will be carrying out tables for the vendors, helping the outside vendors with their tents, and then setting up for the Men’s Brat sale.
 
We need 7 or 8 (or more) at 2pm on Saturday to take all the tables down, bring the chairs back into the FH, and set up for Sunday.

COOKIE FACTORY
Carol Tummons and Carol Fuller have put up a sign-up in the Fellowship Hall. They will need a lot of your famous baked goods, volunteers to set up, price, sell, and take down. See the sign-up sheet for what is needed!
 
PLANTS
Marge Radosevich is in charge of the plant sale, which will be held in the Atrium. Marge and Sue Wurtzbacher will work with those that are willing to donate plants. They would like you to bring your plants on Friday to the atrium so they can work on pricing.

McCormick Methodist Church Family. (Sign up in the fellowship hall)
What:
Food – Unique Dinning Experience:
  • Bring a can of your favorite vegetables (corn, peas, beans, mixed, other) The contents will be opened, strained, and added to a pre-prepared base in a hot boiling cauldron (Hobo Style).
  • Rinse and save the can. You will need it to eat out of later. Paper bowls will also be available.
  • Bring a koozie for the hot can.
  • Bring a lawn chair.
  • Beverages that will be available are tea, lemonade and water. If another beverage is desired, please feel free to bring it!
  • Sign up in the fellowship hall.
Fellowship and Fun – Enjoy:

Note: Please bring additional food items to help restock the MMC Food Pantry! Suggestions: small jars of peanut butter, pasta, sauces, soup, canned meats, canned meals (beef stew etc.), cereal, fruit cups or cans of fruit cocktail! Please be aware of expiration dates.
 

CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE

DECEMBER 7 2-4PM FELLOWSHIP HALL

The Evangelism Committee is planning a Christmas Event in conjunction with Holiday on Main in McCormick. It will be held on Saturday, December 7 from 2-4pm. They are planning on having a professional Santa Claus in the Fellowship Hall, which will be decorated with child-friendly decorations. Cookies and Punch will be served.
 
They are looking for an inflatable Christmas decoration that children (of all ages) would enjoy. Please contact Janice Tipton if you have one or two.
 
There will be several different church groups presenting their music in the sanctuary.
 
They will be calling on the church family for cookies and possibly some decorations.
