Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

This week I share with you a lesson on help. There are two sides to this lesson. You will learn that sometimes we are called to help others, and we must learn when we need to ask for help for ourselves. Both are important. Read Below.

I Heard My Brother Crying

James W. Moore tells a story that all of need to read.

Some years ago in a small village in the Midwest, a little twelve-year old girl named Terri was babysitting her little brother. Terri walked outside to check the mail. As she turned back from the mailbox, she couldn’t believe her eyes. The house was on fire. So very quickly the little house was enveloped in flames.

Terri ran as fast as she could into the flaming house only to find her baby brother trapped by a burning rafter which had fallen and pinned him to the floor. Hurriedly, Terri worked to free her brother. She had trouble getting him loose as the flames were dancing around their heads. Finally, she freed him. She picked him up and quickly took him outside and revived him just as the roof of the house caved in.

By this time, firemen were on the scene and the neighbors had gathered outside the smoldering remains of the house. The neighbors had been too frightened to go inside or to do anything to help, and they were tremendously impressed with the courage of the twelve-year old girl. They congratulated her for her heroic efforts and said, “Terri, you are so very brave. Weren’t you scared? What were you thinking about when you ran into the burning house?” I love Terri’s answer. She said, “I wasn’t thinking about anything. I just heard my little brother crying.”

Let me ask you something? How long has it been? How long has it been since you heard your brother or sister crying? How long has it been since you stopped and did something about it?

James Moore teaches us that we are to listen to those around us that need our help.

Now, let’s look at the other side of the issue,,,,,

Asking for Help

Doctor Fred Collier, a retired physician tells this story about his youth.

He was a medical student in the Army Specialized Training Corps in 1945 when World War II ended. He was from a Kansas family that didn’t have the kind of money he needed to complete medical school on his own. And so when he mustered out of the army, he had no idea how he’d ever finish school, if indeed he’d ever finish it all.

One day he happened to pick up a copy of a magazine in a barber shop. One of the articles talked about the kindness and compassion of Eleanor Roosevelt, whose husband, President Franklin Roosevelt had died just a few months before.

That article planted a seed in Fred’s mind. He went to the local library and with the help of the librarian found Mrs. Roosevelt’s home address. Then he sat down and composed a letter telling her about his plight. He wrote it and rewrote until he had it exactly the way he wanted it.

When he put the letter in an envelope and dropped it in the mailbox, even his young wife wondered if it was worth the time and the postage he’d spent on it.

To Fred’s amazement, Mrs. Roosevelt agreed to meet him. When the meeting ended, she promised to help him. In the months and years ahead Fred got checks through Mrs. Roosevelt from a variety of sources, including her own personal checks. Fred, in turn, kept her informed of his progress and sent her copies of all his term papers. Her secretary said later that she always read them with great interest.

Later Mrs. Roosevelt visited the couple in their sparsely furnished apartment. The owner of the apartment nearly collapsed when he recognized the famous visitor.

When Fred finally finished Medical School he told Mrs. Roosevelt that he didn’t know how he would ever be able to repay her. She said that repayment wasn’t necessary nor desirable. Then she added “I will be adequately repaid if, when you are financially secure someday, you help out someone else who is truly deserving, as you were.”

Doctor Fred Collier reached out for help and he received it. As did blind Bartimaeus. It is a hard thing to do, this asking, a difficult thing, a humbling thing, but there are times when we all need help, times when we must turn to our parents once again for help, or to our children. Sometimes it is to the church. Sometimes to God.

Our Church is a place where we can do both. We help and love others. Yet, when we have given out and our own needs go unmet, we receive love and help from others. The balance here must be achieved by every Church person.

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – A Modern-Day Good Samaritan!

Dan Desfosses, right, manager of Market Basket, and the “Good Samaritan” (left) known only as Skip.

This week’s kindness story is reprinted from a Good News Network entry dated Oct. 11, 2024. Touching our hearts, it restores our faith in the goodness of mankind in a big way!
A Massachusetts senior lost an envelope containing $12,000 at a supermarket, but just as there seemed to be no hope of finding it, the kindness of a Good Samaritan reunited the woman with her life savings. Returning home from grocery shopping at the local Market Basket in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, 71-year-old Ha’s heart dropped—the envelope of cash was nowhere to be seen. Speaking very little English, Ha called her nephew Truong Huynh for help.

Huynh, 55, took his aunt back to Market Basket to look for the cash, but despite checking everywhere she had gone, their search yielded nothing. Arriving at the help desk, the two got in touch with manager Dan Desfosses, who said he would check the security camera footage to see if they could locate where and when she lost the envelope. This too turned up nothing.

Giving up, they headed back to their car. Suddenly Desfosses and another man came running out to meet them, with the manager explaining that this man had just brought the envelope with every last dollar accounted for to the management desk.

“We were so happy, we almost cried,” said Huynh, adding that he asked to take a photo of the man with Desfosses. “He showed honor,” Huynh said. “Many people wouldn’t pass that test.” The ‘he’ in question was a man called Skip, whose girlfriend worked at the Market Basket. “I don’t know if there’s a lot of people that would do that,” Desfosses added. “It shows you what he’s made of… It shows you there are truly some good people in this world.”

Once home, Ha decided to return to Market Basket the next day and give a cash reward to Mr. Skip. She left $300 with his girlfriend as he wasn’t there at the time.

“It takes a special kind of person to do something so honest and selfless, and Skip, you are a true example of integrity and compassion,” Huynh wrote. “Thank you, Skip — you’ve touched more lives than you know today.”

Website Kindness Entry: Several times during our recovery from Helene, when I went into convenience stores to pay for gas, I was given a complimentary drink – at one, I was even told to come back the next morning when they’d be serving free breakfast to everyone!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

1) Be a blessing to others by sharing your Act of Kindness (no names please) on our website, or use this link! Then check back each week to learn how others are passing on acts of kindness! The link is https://www.mccormickmc.org/acts-of-kindness

2) There is a Kindness box in the library on the window sill, along with paper and pencil. Share your God-Wink, perhaps someone else will be inspired!

The Bible tells us, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

Thank you to those who already pledged! The finance committee will use the figures to work on the 2025 budget.
It is never too late to pledge! If you have not filled out a commitment card, there are extras in the office.

You may want to consider using Vanco to make your donations. You can set it up to pay automatically, which is wonderful, especially when you are away or unable to attend in person. You get a message from them when it makes the donation. You can stop or change the amount at any time. It is secure and part of our website.

Please fill out the commitment card, even if using Vanco. This helps the finance team to budget.

HOBO STEW PARTY

From Wendy Kvale…

Great weather, smiling faces, light breezes, beautiful blue skies with puffy white clouds and what else…oh yes COWS!!! Our first HOBO stew to raise awareness and food for our own church pantry was a HUGE success!! We had about 46 people who ventured all the way out of town to the “Meyers Farm” for this activity. Each of us brought a can of vegetables for the pot to share among ourselves and brought a bag of food for our church pantry. Oh, of course we had desserts, along with a bonfire for the chill later in the evening!

It was loads of fun and our entire Church family wants to thank Mike Dunn, “the cook” and Maxine Dunn “the brain child” along with Pat & Brad Meyers, our gracious hosts. I know they had no electricity for 2 weeks and a lot of storm damage to clean up for us before hand. Thank you all as we had a wonderful time and a special thanks to Dave & Patty Kriger, I did see Dave in there working on that stew…Patty…hmmm????? LOL

Thanks for attending and we will look forward to another HOBO Stew evening out!

MMC FOOD PANTRY
DONATIONS FROM HOBO STEW

“Double thank you” to Brad and Pat Meyers for hosting the Hobo Stew last Saturday night! How yummy it was! Not only that, but thank you for the generosity of the 45+ who arrived in hobo attire bearing gifts to replenish our church pantry! Thank you from those who will receive bags of groceries when they come to our church door. God bless you all.

ELDER BASKET MINISTRY
OCTOBER 27 – NOVEMBER 17

Several Native tribes in South Carolina counties were hit hard with the recent storms; Spartanburg, Dorchester, Charleston, Colleton, Santee, Lauren’s and Edisto are still working to recover. They were still trying to clean up from hurricane Debby when Helene came through. The Edisto River, with several small rivers running into it, had severe flooding.

On October 27, we will begin collecting items for “Elder Baskets”.

“Elder Baskets” are plastic laundry baskets filled with non-perishable items, which are given to elderly Native Americans in need. Many Native Americans live well below the poverty line. The Committee on Native American Ministries give these baskets to help them through particularly trying times.

MMC will join the ministry, under the direction of Lola Rek and Lorna Hill, starting on October 27. The church family is asked to bring items and put them in the laundry baskets, located along the back wall of the Fellowship Hall.
Here are the suggested items. You can bring as many items you want any week, but, remember, they need to be delivered by Nov 17.

Donations for the Native American Elder Baskets:
Week #1: Oct. 27 – Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Toilet Paper, Shampoo, Bar Soaps
Week #2: Nov 3 – Cans of Meats, Canned Vegetables, Peanut Butter, Pasta, Fruit cups, Spaghetti and pasta sauce
Week #3: Nov 10 – Soup, Evaporated Milk, Dried Beans & Rice, Oatmeal, Instant Potatoes
Week #4: Nov. 17 – Laundry Detergent, Dish Detergent, Paper Towels & Trash Bags.

You are welcome to donate other non-perishable items, such as coffee, coffee mugs, and granola/breakfast bars. Seasonal candies are also greatly appreciated.

If you would rather make a monetary contribution and let us do the shopping, please make a check out to MMC and put “Elder Baskets” in the memo section. You can leave your check in the offering plate, take to the office or mail to the church at MMC P.O. Box 267, McCormick SC 29835.
You can also donate to the Elder Basket Fund online

We pray this will show our Native American friends the “Love of Christ” at Christmas.

Our goal is to have many, many baskets full of needed items for the Native American Outreach Ministry to deliver to the Native Elders over the holidays.

ALL SAINTS DAY
NOVEMBER 3

MMC will be celebrating All Saints Day on Sunday, November 3.

The All Saints Banner is located in the sanctuary for you to tie a bell to honor someone who has passed away. If you are not able to get to the church prior to November 3 and would like a bell tied for a loved one, email Donna Hutto  and she will do it for you.

On November 3, All Saints Day, we will celebrate with communion. We will call out the names of all members that have passed away since last All Saints Day and light candles for them. Family members are invited to participate in the candle lighting.

On All Saints Day, we recognize that we are part of a giant choir singing the same song. It is the song Jesus taught his disciples; a tune that has resonated for more than 2,000 years; a melody sung in glory and on the earth. Our great privilege is to add our voices to this chorus.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Laity Sunday 2024

Laity Sunday celebrates the ministry of all Christians as they love God and neighbor. As God’s people grow in grace to become disciples in the Church and community, we gather with others and connect all to God’s saving love in Jesus Christ. So, on Laity Sunday (October 20, 2024), we continue to lift up God’s call to all who follow the way of Jesus and lead others to him – specifically as we consider what it means to cherish/protect what has been entrusted to us: our witness to grace at work in every life.

Laity Sunday is a day set aside to remember and lift up a constant reality: the priesthood and ministry of all. Everyone is invited to share in God’s community of healing togetherness and world-repairing love.

Laity Sunday is a special Sunday “to celebrate the ministry of all Christians” (2016 Book of Discipline, ¶ 264.2). Usually observed on the third Sunday in October (in 2024, October 20), Laity Sunday is one way we express the core Christian conviction that all are called to participate in God’s mission to “abolish death” and bring life to light through the good news of Jesus.

Methodism, in all its roots, has a long history celebrating and recognizing the ministry of the laity. In the early days of American Methodism, the laity served and maintained congregations between visits of the circuit riders. Today, lay people are the front line of daily ministry at the workplace, in the home and within the community.

See you in Church or online this Sunday when we truly celebrate the ministry of our people known as the Laity.

Your Pastor,
Nels

We’re thankful that we can respond and help in Jesus’ Name. Please pray for these families and for our teams that are working in some of the hardest-hit areas across the Southeast.” —Franklin Graham

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Kindness and A Father’s Love!

This week’s Kindness story was one I saw on television and just had to look up online. I found it on the Fox Weather website. I share it because it reminded me of our Heavenly Father’s great love for each one of us!

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – A small red road reflector, a seemingly insignificant object, has become a beacon of hope for a South Carolina family in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This humble pavement marker, once merely a tool for visibility, now holds a profound meaning. It is a testament to a father’s unwavering determination and the kindness of strangers.

Helene’s destructive force sought to sever the bond between David Jones and his daughter, Elizabeth. Yet their love proved to be more resilient than any storm. Faced with the devastation, Jones embarked on a perilous 17-mile journey, crawling through debris, scaling obstacles and defying the wrath of nature to fulfill his most sacred duty as a father: to walk his daughter down the aisle.
With no internet or cell service, Jones and his wife were completely unaware of the devastation that lay ahead. What should have been a simple hour-and-a-half drive to just over the Tennessee border turned into a grueling seven-hour journey, filled with detours and delays.

At that point, the state troopers were stopping everybody, getting them off the interstate and saying, “You can’t go any further, the bridges are out,” Jones recalled. When he asked about walking, the troopers advised him to return to his car and spend the night there. “I said, ‘I’m sorry. You don’t understand. My daughter’s getting married in Johnson City at 11 o’clock, and I’m going to be there to walk her down the aisle.” The troopers were sympathetic but were unable to allow him to continue. After they left the roadblock, Jones thought, “This was my chance,” as he grabbed his backpack and threw in his shaving kit along with a couple of changes of underwear and socks. Equipped with a windbreaker and a cell phone light, Jones began his ascent up Temple Hill Road.

“After about 5.5 hours of hitchhiking and hiking, I made it downtown by 7:30 a.m.,” he said. “I was able to clean up and then get to my daughter’s wedding on time.” Throughout his journey, his daughter had no idea what he was going through due to no cell service and the father had initially let everyone know not to let his daughter know their dilemma on her special day – they would tell her later.

Walking the last part of his journey, Jones grabbed a life-saving road reflector. “I apologize if I grabbed it from your driveway, whoever it was, I will replace it for you,” he stressed. “I had a good Samaritan pull up in a white truck when it looked like I might be a little late, and he drove me out the rest of the way.”

“Through God’s divine intervention,” Jones said, “everything fell into place for the joyous occasion.” In the end, his journey had not only brought him to his daughter’s wedding but had also strengthened their bond in a way that would last a lifetime!

Stewardship Sunday-Loving the Lord and His Church

This Sunday we will celebrate our commitment to God and His Church by offering our estimate of giving cards for 2025. Logistically, this is essential for our Church Council to plan responsible usage of our resources for our ministry this coming year. We renew our membership vows to support our church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service and our witness. Your gifts do so much more than just paying utilities and the church staff. Your giving empowers us to love our community and one another. We can feed the hungry. Help those without resources to have better lives and offer everyone the love, grace and salvation through Jesus. Your talents and service empower us to become the hands and feet of Christ by touching the lives of those around us and nurturing them through good days and bad. Your wisdom gives our Church the willingness to heed God’s call and challenge to build our Church and the Kingdom of God.

We are so thankful that God has blessed us with so much abundance that we can serve our Church and make or community a better place by sharing Christ. It is an honor and privilege to surrender to Christ what we have as we realize that all we really need comes through Him.

In the past 6 weeks, we have studied how generous living brings joy to all for both the giver and the receiver. We have much to do as we repair our church, preach the Word, save souls, feed the hungry, love our community, support victims of hurricanes, love the children of this community, take care of the disadvantaged and seek out the new challenges for ministry that God gives us.

See you in Church or online this Sunday as we set our ministry for 2025 into motion – all to God’s glory. The time is now to put our gifts in the game! This past week I have watched our Church love those without power and food. We have taken the sick to the hospitals and offered services of assistance to those unable to help themselves.

Thank the Lord we are able!

Your Pastor,
Nels

“Our hearts break for all those who have been devastated by Hurricane Helene. People have lost their homes, roads are washed out, millions are without power, and some have even lost loved ones—so many of our neighbors are hurting. We’re thankful that we can respond and help in Jesus’ Name. Please pray for these families and for our teams that are working in some of the hardest-hit areas across the Southeast.” —Franklin Graham

Mitchells Share From Their Mission Experience In Panama

(NOTE: Sue is wearing an authentic native dress!)

At the September 20 meeting of the 24:7 Small Group, Sue and Mitch Mitchell presented a wonderful slide presentation from their 8 years as missionaries in Panama, specifically in the Town of Bouquete. Earlier this year, they participated with Missionary Assist Panama assisting with providing breakfast cleanup, preparing and delivering meals to the Medical Mission Team that was there in Casa Palmira. Though it was a little tiring and stressful at times, they say that God helped them to get through it and they are hopeful to have that opportunity again next year. Sue and Mitch have a special passion for the work they have been able to do on the reservations, children’s home ministry, etc. and they have quite often shared their personal skills and abilities (i.e. Sue with education and Mitch with technical/electrical needs) to their ministry. They are especially grateful to their Church Family at McCormick Methodist Church for their contributions to their mission work. The members of 24:7 Small Group are especially proud of the mission work of one of its own members – Sue – and we are hopeful that the Mitchells might one day make this presentation to our congregation!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – “Finding God In The Storm!”

Our memories of the early morning hours of Friday, September 27 will forever be affected by the death and destruction of Hurricane Helene. There are so many personal stories – both sad and heartwarming – of that period from 4 a.m. until daylight; I would like to share mine. Jessica and I were awakened when our power went off around 4 a.m. Soon after we felt a thundering jolt to our house! I looked out our back windows but, of course, saw nothing but darkness – from then until sunrise, I sat up, wanting so badly to see outside but at the same time dreading what I might see. As the ravaging wind and rain continued, I sat and prayed, recalling comforting scriptures. A sudden feeling of comfort came over me when I thought of the quote on the t-shirt I just happened to be wearing – “In waters deep, my faith will stand.” As Jesus calmed the storm for the disciples in Mark 4: 35-41, so also, He does that for us! He brought Jessica and me safely through the storm. The next morning, we saw two trees on the back of our house and garage as well as a couple uprooted in the back yard. They are still there, and we still cannot go down the steps into the backyard, but the insurance adjuster is coming Wednesday! Thanks be to God who is still watching over us! We are so thankful for that!

Speaking of heartwarming stories, a special “thank you” goes out to Carol Myers for sharing the following email she received in a recent newsfeed – it’s even from one of our “community neighbors”! – “Today, we’re sharing a story from reader Cindi S. in McCormick, SC : “Being caught in the direct path of Hurricane Helene, experiencing damage from tropical force winds and extended power outages, my household gathered what food we could salvage, loaded the car and headed north. Unaware of broad reaching storm damage, we were unable to find refuge or gas to continue our search. Stranded in Gaffney, SC, three separate good Samaritans rescued us by contributing gas cans, funnels, and gas to get us on our way! None of them would take money for their efforts. Thank you to these nameless angels for restoring my faith that good people still exist.”

Website Kindness Entry: When our power was restored after the storm there were still several major electrical appliances that would not work. We were able to contact a local electrician who came late that day when he was finished with all of his calls. After 30 minutes in our breaker box, he had restored all of them! When I reached for my checkbook to pay him, he told me to make it out for “zero” – – just one kind story of so many that are being told following Hurricane Helene!

Spoons and Ladles

Last Tuesday, we hosted the Bells Across America celebration of our US Constitution. After the service, some of our guests asked me why we had pots and ladles on the altar table. I told them we were studying how to live generously and that spoons were for serving ourselves and ladles are for serving others. I then added we should put down our spoons and pick up our ladles. I think our guests got the point about our church. We are here to share the love of Jesus with others.

A ladle and a spoon are both perfectly good utensils. They are just designed for different purposes. The spoon is a single sized utensil that allows you to efficiently and effectively serve yourself. The ladle is a larger tool that is better served being used to put larger helpings on others plates. It’s designed for serving others.

Yes, you can serve others with a spoon, but it’s not efficient. Yes, you can serve yourself with the ladle, but that’s not its purpose.

The challenge, I see, is that most people are walking around life with only a spoon. We only seek to serve ourselves. We see the world through the lens of “looking out for number one.” It causes us to be myopic and selfish. There are certainly times when we need to serve ourselves, but it’s not a rewarding long-term way to go through life.

Instead, today I encourage you to at least take the ladle with you. Be on the lookout for reasons and opportunities to provide others value. Look for reasons to share and serve. It might be as simple as doing your job in a generous way…or it might be paying for someone’s lunch. Whatever. Just look for a way to set down your spoon for a bit today…and serve.

See you in Church or online this Sunday where we will continue with our Living Generously series.

Your Pastor,
Nels

A Summary of the last episode of Living Generously
POOR

Frank’s journey to understanding generous living continues. He is affected by his dream and determined to be more generous. An interaction with Re leads Frank to the soup kitchen, and Frank is encouraged to do more than pull out his check book. He finds himself working in the kitchen. Serving stretches Frank, and he finds that he has much to learn about helping people.

The soup kitchen gives Frank a taste of generous living and Re imparts wisdom that by becoming poor, we are following Christ’s example. Jesus calls us to become poor and serve others so that we can show them God’s love. And the question we are left with is, “Are you serving yourself, or are you serving others?”

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – “Let Us Never Forget!”

A big “Thank You” goes to Judi Bouchard this week for sharing this photo of the MISSING MAN TABLE she set up in the River Grille Foyer at SLV in observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day. A message went out on Friday, September 20 to residents inviting them to visit and take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of those military members who have yet to make it home.

The message also included the significance of the elements of the table as follows:

• The Table is ROUND — to show our continual, everlasting concern for our missing men
• The Tablecloth is WHITE — symbolizing the purity of their motives when answer the call to duty.
• A Single RED ROSE reminds us of the life of each of the Missing Americans, & their loved ones and friends who keep the faith, awaiting answers.
• The Vase is tied with YELLOW ribbon, symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing.
• A slice of lemon is to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured & missing in a foreign land.
• A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.
• The Bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain us AND those lost from our country, founded as one nation under God.
• The candle serves as a beacon of hope for their eventual return.
• The glass is inverted to symbolize their inability to share a toast.
• The chair is empty — they are Missing.

In addition, there was a link to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency to learn more about the organization. As a part of their commitment to “fulfill our nation’s promise”, POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed each year on the third Friday of September throughout the U.S. and around the world. On their website, it is reported that over 1,200 lives have been accounted for between 2017 and 2023 which is quite impressive, but one can only imagine the magnitude of their task.

Several years ago, Jessica and I saw a similar MISSING MAN TABLE in a dessert shoppe in neighboring Edgefield. Having never seen one before, my natural reaction was to pause, reflect, and breathe a prayer of gratitude for the sacrifices made on my behalf as well as for family members of those who never made it home. Judi says simply, “it’s all about awareness”, and she is so right. The MISSING MAN TABLE certainly gets the job done so that we never forget!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Where is the Piccolo?

Sir Michael Costa, the celebrated conductor, was holding a rehearsal. As the mighty chorus rang out, accompanied by scores of instruments, the piccolo player a little pint-sized flute thinking perhaps that his contribution would not be missed amid so much music, stopped playing. Suddenly, the great leader stopped and cried out, “Where is the piccolo?”

The sound of that one small instrument was necessary to the harmony, and the Master Conductor missed it when it dropped out. The point? To the Conductor there are no insignificant instruments in an orchestra. Sometimes the smallest and seemingly least important one can make the greatest contribution and even if it doesn’t seem to make that big a difference to the audience at large, THE CONDUCTOR KNOWS IT right away!

In the Church the players and the instruments are diverse—different sizes, different shapes, different notes, different roles to play. But like the piccolo player in Sir Michael’s orchestra, we often in our own sovereignty decide that our contribution is not significant. Our contribution couldn’t possibly make a difference. And so we quit playing. Stop doing that which we’ve been given to do. We drop out. But the Conductor immediately notices. From our perspective, our contribution may be small, but from His, it is crucial.

I just have to believe I’m writing to some piccolo players this week, who have dropped out of the orchestra, for whatever reasons: pain, exhaustion, insecurity, criticism, laziness, misbehavior. Convinced that your contribution doesn’t mean a hill of beans in the bigger scheme of things. We have buried our talent in the ground.

For all piccolos who won’t play, or at least aren’t playing, Jesus has something to say and so do I as your Pastor. The Church needs you and you need the Church. Let the Orchestra sound off with all the instruments playing!

See you at Baker Creek for Worship This Sunday. There will be a service online for those that watch from home.

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Looking For Jesus!

Have You Seen Jesus My Lord – Lyrics: A Tribute to Faith
As we begin the Stewardship process at McCormick Methodist Church, the stage has certainly been set for us with the Living Generously video series. We are learning that, as with Frank, the process is personal for each one of us because it involves our individual relationship with Jesus and all that He did for us and continues to do in our lives, all because of our Heavenly Father’s loving kindness toward us! And so we began our process of “looking for Jesus”, our “Master of Kindness”!

My personal search for Jesus takes me back to many years ago when my late husband Ronnie and I went on a Walk to Emmaus, a 72-hour weekend retreat that focuses on Luke 24: 13-35. That scripture relates the story of the risen Christ appearing to two friends who were walking together, sharing their hearts’ deepest concerns. Christ joined them and explained the scriptures as they walked, and this experience on the road was a heart-warming experience for the two friends.

The illuminating climax of the experience was when Christ took bread and said the blessing, then broke it and gave it to them. The two had their eyes opened and they recognized Him as the risen Christ and they rushed back to Jerusalem to tell others.

Christian music, of course, played a major role, as we had our personal Emmaus journey, and one song especially comes to mind – “Have You Seen Jesus My Lord?” – I suggest you type the following into your browser .. and enjoy!

Video of Emmaus Music-Have You Seen Jesus My Lord? (with lyrics) by John Fischer

The choir’s anthem this past Sunday – “Here I Am, Lord” – was also one of our favorite Emmaus songs that brought us closer to Christ during that weekend. I think it represents our perfect response when we experience Jesus! May we all experience anew the generous living we enjoy because of the kindness and generosity of Jesus!

FIRST TUESDAY

STEPHEN MINISTRY CORNER

Another point on the Stephen Ministry Caregiver’s Compass is Full of Faith. It is through God, not the Stephen Minister, that the power of compassion, grace, and mercy come from. Christians are responsible for the care. God is responsible for the cure.

Stephen Ministers do so by incorporating, when appropriate, prayer and scripture in their relationship with their care receiver. We do not force someone to pray or read scripture … we simply provide an atmosphere of acceptance and try to be alert to spiritual needs.

Let us help you begin a caring relationship with a Stephen Minister.Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders. We may be reached through the church office at (864) 852-2394.

Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Will Your Light Shine This Sunday?

Several centuries ago in a mountain village in Europe, a wealthy nobleman wondered what legacy he should leave to his townspeople. He made a good decision. He decided to build them a church. No one was permitted to see the plans or the inside of the church until it was finished. At its grand opening, the people gathered and marveled at the beauty of the new church. Everything had been thought of and included. It was a masterpiece.

But then someone said, “Wait a minute! Where are the lamps? It is really quite dark in here. How will the church be lighted?” The nobleman pointed to some brackets in the walls, and then he gave each family a lamp, which they were to bring with them each time they came to worship.

“Each time you are here'” the nobleman said, “the place where you are seated will be lighted. Each time you are not here, that place will be dark. This is to remind you that whenever you fail to come to church, some part of God’s house will be dark”

That’s a poignant story, isn’t it? And it makes a very significant point about the importance of our commitment and loyalty to the church. This story also illustrates the importance of each person in our Church. Your talents, gifts, service, presence and love are needed each Sunday. Without you, Church is just not the same. Without being in Church, your soul remains hungry for the Word of the Lord. Yes, You need to be a vital part of the Church!

See You in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Living Generously-What happened in last week’s video?

Week 2- DEFENSE
Frank’s story continues as we find him in court. He is dazed and confused as he realizes that he is on trial for loving money more than God. His attorney tries to defend Frank, but as his money takes the stand he affirms that Frank is the boss. His money testifies that Frank is very conscientious about his money, but he never asks for God’s advice. Frank wants his generosity to defend him. But when his generosity takes the stand, his testimony is less than helpful. Frank’s generosity doesn’t think Frank sacrifices much in giving his money. When the prosecution calls the other 90% of Frank’s money to the stand, he doesn’t even have to testify in order to show Frank’s indulgence. Before rendering a guilty verdict, the judge warns Frank that the Bible says you can’t serve both God and money. The judge’s banging gavel wakes Frank from his dream.

After getting out of bed, Frank looks out the window to see Re hard at work pounding a stake in the ground. Later, Re makes the observation that the dream was Frank’s own heart convicting him for giving God only his leftovers. Frank used his money, his time, and his talent to serve himself rather than to serve God. Everything in your life is either an idol or a tool to serve the Lord. Living Generously is about having a heart so focused on God that it overflows to others. And the question we are left with is, “How do you plead?”

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Head – Heart – Hands – Health!

Some of us have memories of being active members of 4-H Club – meetings, projects, fun summer camps, etc. The logo was a 4-leaf clover with an “H” on each leaf, representing “Head, Heart, Hands, Health”. Those memories were stirred recently when I read the Good News Network’s Backpack Giveaway article dated August 3, 2024.

It was about an 18-year-old Oklahoma boy – Reed Marcum – who spent his Saturday igniting school spirit by giving away 6,000 book bags stuffed with school supplies. The giveaway is part of Reed’s annual 4-H service project—and its success resulted in his being honored with the 4-H Youth in Action Award for his community-centered projects that for 9 years have collectively raised more than $3.5 million in funds and donated items.

The drive-thru Back-to-School Book Bag Giveaway, just one of those projects, has distributed more than 33,000 backpacks and $1.3 million in school supplies to students and families from his hometown and beyond, including across Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. “I want to help kids get their school year started right,” said Reed, who is a rising sophomore at Oklahoma State University. “…it is so fulfilling to know we are playing a small part in getting kids excited about their education.”

Since 2016, Reed has also organized an annual 4-H Toy Giveaway. During last year’s toy drive, cars lined up for over three miles and Marcum distributed more than 10,000 toys to children and families in need for the holidays.

As a national winner, Marcum received a $5,000 higher education scholarship and has showcased his story nationally. He says he was inspired by his longtime membership in 4-H whose mission is “engaging youth to reach their fullest potential to become true leaders.”

“Head – Heart – Hands – Health” – how inspiring it is for us to realize that an organization that was first formed in 1912 – over 100 years ago – has such a far-reaching impact of kindness today!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

MMW RETREAT

The Second Annual Women’s Retreat was a wonderful experience for the women who attended. The first day was at Elijah Clark State Park and the second day was in the Fellowship Hall at church. Besides the women of our church there were three from other churches.

De French was our leader, and many spoke of her passion which made the retreat so special. Other comments were the retreat was informative, awesome, my group was the best, and loved when sisters shared. We became more aware of women’s role in Scripture, and many felt that this retreat created strong bonds with the women who attended.

It was a wonderful weekend with a terrific leader, good food, and, most importantly, being with each other. Thank you Maxine, Patty, Wendy, Kim, and everyone who attended.

Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

This week we will have our second message in our stewardship sermon series, Living Generously. Below is a quick summary.

Week 1- FIRST

This past week we were introduced to Frank Donovan, a successful businessman, and his family. In case you missed it, here is a little synopsis to so you will be current this Sunday. You can watch the September 1 service on our webpage and see the video and sermon.

As Frank meets with his financial consultant, we learn he has a high standard for success but isn’t very concerned with giving. When missionaries return to the United States with little in possession, Frank’s wife commits to throw a welcome back party for them. Frank is less than thrilled. We are also introduced to Re, their gardener. He is a humble man who serves happily. When Frank’s son asks Re why he is doing more than his job, Re tells the boy about the sacrifices God’s people gave Him in Israel. Some people gave their best sheep while others gave their spotted, stinky sheep. Re says, “Which do you think pleases God? The spotted sheep or the best, healthy sheep? I want to give God my best.”

Re’s example impacts Frank’s son, prompting him to give his favorite toy to the returning missionary’s son. Frank sees the sacrifice and is humbled. He was going to give his old, worn out watch to the missionary. That night, Frank got a glimpse of his heart and real generosity. The question we are left with is, “Do you give God your first and your best or your leftovers?”

Get Your Hand off the Intercom!

Would you mind a silly story from years gone by? At the end of their first date, a young man takes his favorite girl home. Emboldened by the night, he decides to try for that important first kiss. With an air of confidence, he leans with his hand against the wall and, smiling, he says to her, “Darling, how about a goodnight kiss?”

Horrified, she replies, “Are you mad? My parents will see us!”
“Oh come on!” he says, “Who’s gonna see us at this hour?”
“No, please,” she says, “Can you imagine if we get caught?”
“Oh come on,” he persists, “there’s nobody around, they’re all sleeping!”
“No way,” she says, “It’s just too risky!”
“Oh please,” he continues, “please, I like you so much!”
“No, no, and no. I like you too, but I just can’t!”
“Oh yes you can. Please?”
“No, no. I just can’t.”
“Pleeeeease?”

Out of the blue, the porch light goes on, and the girl’s sister shows up in her pajamas, hair disheveled. In a sleepy voice the sister says: “Dad says to go ahead and give him a kiss. Or I can do it. Or if need be, he’ll come down himself and do it. But for crying out loud tell him to take his hand off the intercom button!”

There will come a time when all of us will push hard on God’s intercom button, if not in our own behalf, certainly in behalf of someone we love. At that moment we will be thankful that we saw unlimited compassion in Christ. For there will come a time when we will rely on Christ’s compassion.

See you in Church This Sunday or online for worship.

Your Pastor,
Nels

YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
ENJOYED THEIR TIME AT HICKORY KNOB
Youth Sunday School Class At Hickory Knob
This past Sunday, these members of the Youth Sunday School Class – Jessica, Jamie, Sydney, and Linda – found a cure for finding no goodies in the Fellowship Hall after church! They decided to meet at Hickory Knob State Park where they enjoyed further discussion of Pastor Nels’ sermon on Living Generously. The consensus was that all really enjoyed the video, Evan’s Mite, where Evan’s father learned a lot about giving from the heart from his son. We also concluded that our mission is to tell others about Jesus! We missed you, Josiah!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Sparking A Campus Revival!

At a time when there’s so much unrest on college campuses, it brought a comforting smile to my face when I saw a television news report this week about a movement that occurred on the Ohio State campus. Football players there drew hundreds to a campus rally to pray and worship, with dozens also being baptized into the Christian faith.

According to one report, “Jesus is on display at Ohio State!” That reporter also stated “As Ohio State Buckeyes players arrived for fall football camp last week, a significant number (at least 21) wore shirts featuring prominent Christian messages. Their photos are now spreading on social media.”

Then on Sunday, August 25, they held a Come to Jesus event that, according to its organizer, former Ohio State wide receiver, Kamryn Babb, “was truly to bring true joy and peace that I believe in, that I think we all believe that can truly only be found in Jesus Christ, and bring it to Columbus and to the campus. God is right here. He is a very present God. He is seeking after the hearts of men.”

Current Buckeye team players who also organized the event brought 10,000 Bibles to distribute and also shared how their faith brought them close together as a team. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a Come to Jesus event happened on all college campuses nationwide? The following link will allow you to view a report on the event:

Sticking With Jesus and your Church

Edwin Peterson tells a story. Several years ago a couple of reporters conducted an experiment on the streets of Miami, Florida. They printed up a copy of the Bill of Rights in the form of a petition, put it on a clipboard, and then stopped people on the sidewalk and asked them to sign it. As you know, the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution are the Bill of Rights, and they were adopted and put into effect in December of 1791. The reporters were surprised at people’s reaction when asked to add their names to the so-called petition. Most people glanced at the document, shook their heads, and walked on by without signing. Several people became angry with the reporters and accused them of being radical enemies of the American way of life. In fact, the experiment ended when the reporters found themselves surrounded by a dozen or so passers-by who were shaking their fists at them and calling them subversive Communists who ought to be thrown in jail.

What the experiment demonstrated is what we already know. Many citizens of the United States pay lip service to their country and its heritage. They claim to be loyal and patriotic in every way. They say they are proud to belong to a country as great as ours. And yet at the same time they haven’t the vaguest notion what the United States Constitution actually says, and they consider the Bill of Rights to be a radical, anti-American document. In other words, these people claim citizenship, but they have not internalized the basic meaning of being a citizen. They claim the privilege, but they will not eat and drink the ethos of United States of America.

The same sort of thing is described in this week’s Gospel. Jesus says, I am the living bread that came down from heaven. . . Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Most people probably think Jesus is talking only about communion. He is saying much more. He’s talking about the difference between external lip service and internal embodiment. He’s talking about the difference between admiring him and actually taking up one’s cross and following him. He’s talking about the difference between acting like a Christian on the outside and being a Christian on the inside. He is talking about following him as our Savior and Lord. This Sunday, we will talk about how we can make this journey with Jesus even more meaningful without out losing our courage.

See You in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Kindness Update – Keeping the World Afloat!

With the exception of more serious interpretive dance, a word that most often describes the art of dancing is joy, and that was my thought when I viewed Judi Bouchard’s recent email “Dance like everyone is watching!”. It included a link to a video of movie stars dancing to the popular song, “I’m So Excited!” Watching it convinced me that today’s hip hoppers and break dancers are “copycats” of yesterday’s swing, boogie woogie, Charleston, quick step and jive! It was such fun to watch!

The scripture above from Psalm 30 links dancing with joy, and that seems to be what the non-profit organization Life Vest Inside did when they began an Annual Dance for Kindness event that is held each year during Worldwide Kindness Day in November! Begun in 2012, their 10th annual event had 23 countries to participate and marked a Decade of Kindness. In all, over 65 countries/360 cities worldwide have participated.

Life Vest Inside asks the question, “Who is your life vest? – who is that person who extends to you a “lifeline of kindness” – who sends you hope when you need it?” The slogan of Life Vest Inside is “Because Kindness Keeps The World Afloat”. The purpose of Dance for Kindness is to look beyond ourselves – beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion and realize that we are citizens of the world, and that kindness is the common thread that unites us all.

When you click on the link below, you can view a promotional video about Dance for Kindness. It also is fun to watch! When you watch it, you might be reminded of the One who is our Life Vest and our reason for “dancing, clothed with joy, as we sing praises to Him!” May we all “dance with God”!

The Vulture and the Hummingbird: Be Careful How You Live – Ephesians 5:15-20

This Sunday I will be preaching on wisdom using texts from 1 Kings and Ephesians. To help you prepare I offer you this little mini-sermon based on Ephesians 5: 15-20. Sunday I will talk about King Solomon and how he sought wisdom from God for help as the King of Israel. The mini-sermon is below and begins with a symbolic illustration (Parable) about the vulture and the hummingbird.

There are two birds that fly over our nation’s deserts: One is the hummingbird and the other is the vulture. The vultures find the rotting meat of the desert, because that is what they look for. They thrive on that diet. But hummingbirds ignore the smelly flesh of dead animals. Instead, they look for the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on what was. They live on the past. They fill themselves with what is dead and gone. But hummingbirds live on what is. They seek new life. They fill themselves with freshness and life. Each bird finds what it is looking for. We all do.

That is the essence of Paul’s teaching: In life, there are two birds. The one bird looks for foolishness and stupidity, the other looks for wisdom. The vultures seek to fill themselves with the rotting flesh of drunkenness and debauchery, the hummingbird sobriety, freshness, and the Spirit. In the desert of this world you have your scavengers who are angry and ungrateful, but you also have those who hum a grateful hymn of thanksgiving. The irony is that you find what you are looking for.

In the fifth chapter of Ephesians Paul outlines proper behavior for good living. In our short passage he admonishes his readers to be careful how they live. He is brief and to the point. Three things we must do: Be wise, be sober, and be thankful. It’s a short list but if we can orient our daily lives around these three—be wise, be sober, be thankful—we will transform not only our lives but also the lives of our family, friends, church, and neighbors. Amen!

We will learn more about the value of seeking God’s help and wisdom this Sunday in Church.

See you there on online. It will be huge!

Your Pastor,
C. Nels Ledwell

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – “Too Sick to Forgive!”

During the Advent Season in 2004, McCormick Methodist Church published an Advent devotional guide filled with stories from members of the congregation. I ran across my copy of this booklet the other day and enjoyed reminiscing as, other than myself, there were only two other current members among the contributing authors – Emilee Groh and Lindy Stahlman. Centered on Ephesians 4:32, my story was about kindness – “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.” Now 20 years later, since most of you would not have read it before, I’d like to share with you my kindness lesson from my grandson back then! And, as we say here in the South, “Bless his heart!”

“God sometimes uses the people in our lives that we would least expect to get our attention. In one such incident, that person for me was my grandson Ross, who was five years old at the time. While riding with me to run some personal errands that involved making about five stops at the homes of friends, Ross became impatient with his grandmother. Finally, as we drove up at the last stop, he had had about as much as he could take.

‘Me-Ma’, he said in a pitiful voice that only your grandchild could use, ‘you’re making me sick’. I turned around and looked at him as he sat slumped in the back seat. I then told him that I was sorry and asked if he could forgive me. He looked at me very seriously and replied, ‘No, Me-Ma, sick people can’t forgive!’

Because I think that everything he does is just too cute, I couldn’t help but be amused. Then, I thought, he really hit the nail on the head! How many times are we guilty of giving in too easily to the personal “sickness” of pride and jealousy that keep us from being kind to one another, from mending relationships with friends and family members? It truly does seem that sometimes we are too sick to forgive others.

In this scripture from Ephesians, we are reminded that, because God has forgiven us, even though we are sinners, by sacrificing His only Son Jesus Christ … so then should we forgive one another. When we put our trust in Him, He will heal our personal “sickness” and show us how to love each other.

This week’s Kindness entry: The son of one of my bridge buddies noticed that the screened wire was coming loose in two different areas of my screened in porch when he came to pick his mother up. He couldn’t help but notice the wooden shelving unit that I had propped up against the screen to keep it from tearing even more! Not only did he offer to repair the screen for me, but he also actually returned on that next Saturday with nails, hammer, and a staple gun in hand! And I, in response to his prompt act of kindness, couldn’t help but cry! He had it fixed in about 30 minutes!

VENDORS NEEDED

OUTSIDE VENDORS NEEDED
The spots in the Fellowship Hall have been filled, and there is a waiting list!

We can still take about three more in tents outside.. then we will stop taking vendors and do up a waiting list in case of cancellations.

Tents are wonderful in that there is more room, wares do not have to be hand-done (however, many are!), and it only costs $25! You do have to provide your own tents, but we have men available to help you put them up and take them down. This is perfect for groups. The Lions Club is returning to sell afghans and brooms. .plus talk to folks about their group’s mission.

If you are interested, or know of someone who is interested, contact Barb Shelley.
