from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Where is the Piccolo?

Sir Michael Costa, the celebrated conductor, was holding a rehearsal. As the mighty chorus rang out, accompanied by scores of instruments, the piccolo player a little pint-sized flute thinking perhaps that his contribution would not be missed amid so much music, stopped playing. Suddenly, the great leader stopped and cried out, “Where is the piccolo?”

The sound of that one small instrument was necessary to the harmony, and the Master Conductor missed it when it dropped out. The point? To the Conductor there are no insignificant instruments in an orchestra. Sometimes the smallest and seemingly least important one can make the greatest contribution and even if it doesn’t seem to make that big a difference to the audience at large, THE CONDUCTOR KNOWS IT right away!

In the Church the players and the instruments are diverse—different sizes, different shapes, different notes, different roles to play. But like the piccolo player in Sir Michael’s orchestra, we often in our own sovereignty decide that our contribution is not significant. Our contribution couldn’t possibly make a difference. And so we quit playing. Stop doing that which we’ve been given to do. We drop out. But the Conductor immediately notices. From our perspective, our contribution may be small, but from His, it is crucial.

I just have to believe I’m writing to some piccolo players this week, who have dropped out of the orchestra, for whatever reasons: pain, exhaustion, insecurity, criticism, laziness, misbehavior. Convinced that your contribution doesn’t mean a hill of beans in the bigger scheme of things. We have buried our talent in the ground.

For all piccolos who won’t play, or at least aren’t playing, Jesus has something to say and so do I as your Pastor. The Church needs you and you need the Church. Let the Orchestra sound off with all the instruments playing!

See you at Baker Creek for Worship This Sunday. There will be a service online for those that watch from home.

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Looking For Jesus!

Have You Seen Jesus My Lord – Lyrics: A Tribute to Faith
As we begin the Stewardship process at McCormick Methodist Church, the stage has certainly been set for us with the Living Generously video series. We are learning that, as with Frank, the process is personal for each one of us because it involves our individual relationship with Jesus and all that He did for us and continues to do in our lives, all because of our Heavenly Father’s loving kindness toward us! And so we began our process of “looking for Jesus”, our “Master of Kindness”!

My personal search for Jesus takes me back to many years ago when my late husband Ronnie and I went on a Walk to Emmaus, a 72-hour weekend retreat that focuses on Luke 24: 13-35. That scripture relates the story of the risen Christ appearing to two friends who were walking together, sharing their hearts’ deepest concerns. Christ joined them and explained the scriptures as they walked, and this experience on the road was a heart-warming experience for the two friends.

The illuminating climax of the experience was when Christ took bread and said the blessing, then broke it and gave it to them. The two had their eyes opened and they recognized Him as the risen Christ and they rushed back to Jerusalem to tell others.

Christian music, of course, played a major role, as we had our personal Emmaus journey, and one song especially comes to mind – “Have You Seen Jesus My Lord?” – I suggest you type the following into your browser .. and enjoy!

Video of Emmaus Music-Have You Seen Jesus My Lord? (with lyrics) by John Fischer

The choir’s anthem this past Sunday – “Here I Am, Lord” – was also one of our favorite Emmaus songs that brought us closer to Christ during that weekend. I think it represents our perfect response when we experience Jesus! May we all experience anew the generous living we enjoy because of the kindness and generosity of Jesus!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

1) Be a blessing to others by sharing your Act of Kindness (no names please) on our website, or use this link! Then check back each week to learn how others are passing on acts of kindness! The link is https://www.mccormickmc.org/acts-of-kindness

2) There is a Kindness box in the library on the window sill, along with paper and pencil. Share your God-Wink, perhaps someone else will be inspired!

FIRST TUESDAY

STEPHEN MINISTRY CORNER

Another point on the Stephen Ministry Caregiver’s Compass is Full of Faith. It is through God, not the Stephen Minister, that the power of compassion, grace, and mercy come from. Christians are responsible for the care. God is responsible for the cure.

Stephen Ministers do so by incorporating, when appropriate, prayer and scripture in their relationship with their care receiver. We do not force someone to pray or read scripture … we simply provide an atmosphere of acceptance and try to be alert to spiritual needs.

Let us help you begin a caring relationship with a Stephen Minister.Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders. We may be reached through the church office at (864) 852-2394.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Will Your Light Shine This Sunday?

Several centuries ago in a mountain village in Europe, a wealthy nobleman wondered what legacy he should leave to his townspeople. He made a good decision. He decided to build them a church. No one was permitted to see the plans or the inside of the church until it was finished. At its grand opening, the people gathered and marveled at the beauty of the new church. Everything had been thought of and included. It was a masterpiece.

But then someone said, “Wait a minute! Where are the lamps? It is really quite dark in here. How will the church be lighted?” The nobleman pointed to some brackets in the walls, and then he gave each family a lamp, which they were to bring with them each time they came to worship.

“Each time you are here'” the nobleman said, “the place where you are seated will be lighted. Each time you are not here, that place will be dark. This is to remind you that whenever you fail to come to church, some part of God’s house will be dark”

That’s a poignant story, isn’t it? And it makes a very significant point about the importance of our commitment and loyalty to the church. This story also illustrates the importance of each person in our Church. Your talents, gifts, service, presence and love are needed each Sunday. Without you, Church is just not the same. Without being in Church, your soul remains hungry for the Word of the Lord. Yes, You need to be a vital part of the Church!

See You in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Living Generously-What happened in last week’s video?

Week 2- DEFENSE
Frank’s story continues as we find him in court. He is dazed and confused as he realizes that he is on trial for loving money more than God. His attorney tries to defend Frank, but as his money takes the stand he affirms that Frank is the boss. His money testifies that Frank is very conscientious about his money, but he never asks for God’s advice. Frank wants his generosity to defend him. But when his generosity takes the stand, his testimony is less than helpful. Frank’s generosity doesn’t think Frank sacrifices much in giving his money. When the prosecution calls the other 90% of Frank’s money to the stand, he doesn’t even have to testify in order to show Frank’s indulgence. Before rendering a guilty verdict, the judge warns Frank that the Bible says you can’t serve both God and money. The judge’s banging gavel wakes Frank from his dream.

After getting out of bed, Frank looks out the window to see Re hard at work pounding a stake in the ground. Later, Re makes the observation that the dream was Frank’s own heart convicting him for giving God only his leftovers. Frank used his money, his time, and his talent to serve himself rather than to serve God. Everything in your life is either an idol or a tool to serve the Lord. Living Generously is about having a heart so focused on God that it overflows to others. And the question we are left with is, “How do you plead?”

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Head – Heart – Hands – Health!

Some of us have memories of being active members of 4-H Club – meetings, projects, fun summer camps, etc. The logo was a 4-leaf clover with an “H” on each leaf, representing “Head, Heart, Hands, Health”. Those memories were stirred recently when I read the Good News Network’s Backpack Giveaway article dated August 3, 2024.

It was about an 18-year-old Oklahoma boy – Reed Marcum – who spent his Saturday igniting school spirit by giving away 6,000 book bags stuffed with school supplies. The giveaway is part of Reed’s annual 4-H service project—and its success resulted in his being honored with the 4-H Youth in Action Award for his community-centered projects that for 9 years have collectively raised more than $3.5 million in funds and donated items.

The drive-thru Back-to-School Book Bag Giveaway, just one of those projects, has distributed more than 33,000 backpacks and $1.3 million in school supplies to students and families from his hometown and beyond, including across Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. “I want to help kids get their school year started right,” said Reed, who is a rising sophomore at Oklahoma State University. “…it is so fulfilling to know we are playing a small part in getting kids excited about their education.”

Since 2016, Reed has also organized an annual 4-H Toy Giveaway. During last year’s toy drive, cars lined up for over three miles and Marcum distributed more than 10,000 toys to children and families in need for the holidays.

As a national winner, Marcum received a $5,000 higher education scholarship and has showcased his story nationally. He says he was inspired by his longtime membership in 4-H whose mission is “engaging youth to reach their fullest potential to become true leaders.”

“Head – Heart – Hands – Health” – how inspiring it is for us to realize that an organization that was first formed in 1912 – over 100 years ago – has such a far-reaching impact of kindness today!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

MMW RETREAT

The Second Annual Women’s Retreat was a wonderful experience for the women who attended. The first day was at Elijah Clark State Park and the second day was in the Fellowship Hall at church. Besides the women of our church there were three from other churches.

De French was our leader, and many spoke of her passion which made the retreat so special. Other comments were the retreat was informative, awesome, my group was the best, and loved when sisters shared. We became more aware of women’s role in Scripture, and many felt that this retreat created strong bonds with the women who attended.

It was a wonderful weekend with a terrific leader, good food, and, most importantly, being with each other. Thank you Maxine, Patty, Wendy, Kim, and everyone who attended.

Online Giving

Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

This week we will have our second message in our stewardship sermon series, Living Generously. Below is a quick summary.

Week 1- FIRST

This past week we were introduced to Frank Donovan, a successful businessman, and his family. In case you missed it, here is a little synopsis to so you will be current this Sunday. You can watch the September 1 service on our webpage and see the video and sermon.

As Frank meets with his financial consultant, we learn he has a high standard for success but isn’t very concerned with giving. When missionaries return to the United States with little in possession, Frank’s wife commits to throw a welcome back party for them. Frank is less than thrilled. We are also introduced to Re, their gardener. He is a humble man who serves happily. When Frank’s son asks Re why he is doing more than his job, Re tells the boy about the sacrifices God’s people gave Him in Israel. Some people gave their best sheep while others gave their spotted, stinky sheep. Re says, “Which do you think pleases God? The spotted sheep or the best, healthy sheep? I want to give God my best.”

Re’s example impacts Frank’s son, prompting him to give his favorite toy to the returning missionary’s son. Frank sees the sacrifice and is humbled. He was going to give his old, worn out watch to the missionary. That night, Frank got a glimpse of his heart and real generosity. The question we are left with is, “Do you give God your first and your best or your leftovers?”

Get Your Hand off the Intercom!

Would you mind a silly story from years gone by? At the end of their first date, a young man takes his favorite girl home. Emboldened by the night, he decides to try for that important first kiss. With an air of confidence, he leans with his hand against the wall and, smiling, he says to her, “Darling, how about a goodnight kiss?”

Horrified, she replies, “Are you mad? My parents will see us!”
“Oh come on!” he says, “Who’s gonna see us at this hour?”
“No, please,” she says, “Can you imagine if we get caught?”
“Oh come on,” he persists, “there’s nobody around, they’re all sleeping!”
“No way,” she says, “It’s just too risky!”
“Oh please,” he continues, “please, I like you so much!”
“No, no, and no. I like you too, but I just can’t!”
“Oh yes you can. Please?”
“No, no. I just can’t.”
“Pleeeeease?”

Out of the blue, the porch light goes on, and the girl’s sister shows up in her pajamas, hair disheveled. In a sleepy voice the sister says: “Dad says to go ahead and give him a kiss. Or I can do it. Or if need be, he’ll come down himself and do it. But for crying out loud tell him to take his hand off the intercom button!”

There will come a time when all of us will push hard on God’s intercom button, if not in our own behalf, certainly in behalf of someone we love. At that moment we will be thankful that we saw unlimited compassion in Christ. For there will come a time when we will rely on Christ’s compassion.

See you in Church This Sunday or online for worship.

Your Pastor,
Nels

YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
ENJOYED THEIR TIME AT HICKORY KNOB
Youth Sunday School Class At Hickory Knob
This past Sunday, these members of the Youth Sunday School Class – Jessica, Jamie, Sydney, and Linda – found a cure for finding no goodies in the Fellowship Hall after church! They decided to meet at Hickory Knob State Park where they enjoyed further discussion of Pastor Nels’ sermon on Living Generously. The consensus was that all really enjoyed the video, Evan’s Mite, where Evan’s father learned a lot about giving from the heart from his son. We also concluded that our mission is to tell others about Jesus! We missed you, Josiah!

Kindness Update – Sparking A Campus Revival!

At a time when there’s so much unrest on college campuses, it brought a comforting smile to my face when I saw a television news report this week about a movement that occurred on the Ohio State campus. Football players there drew hundreds to a campus rally to pray and worship, with dozens also being baptized into the Christian faith.

According to one report, “Jesus is on display at Ohio State!” That reporter also stated “As Ohio State Buckeyes players arrived for fall football camp last week, a significant number (at least 21) wore shirts featuring prominent Christian messages. Their photos are now spreading on social media.”

Then on Sunday, August 25, they held a Come to Jesus event that, according to its organizer, former Ohio State wide receiver, Kamryn Babb, “was truly to bring true joy and peace that I believe in, that I think we all believe that can truly only be found in Jesus Christ, and bring it to Columbus and to the campus. God is right here. He is a very present God. He is seeking after the hearts of men.”

Current Buckeye team players who also organized the event brought 10,000 Bibles to distribute and also shared how their faith brought them close together as a team. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a Come to Jesus event happened on all college campuses nationwide? The following link will allow you to view a report on the event:

Sticking With Jesus and your Church

Edwin Peterson tells a story. Several years ago a couple of reporters conducted an experiment on the streets of Miami, Florida. They printed up a copy of the Bill of Rights in the form of a petition, put it on a clipboard, and then stopped people on the sidewalk and asked them to sign it. As you know, the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution are the Bill of Rights, and they were adopted and put into effect in December of 1791. The reporters were surprised at people’s reaction when asked to add their names to the so-called petition. Most people glanced at the document, shook their heads, and walked on by without signing. Several people became angry with the reporters and accused them of being radical enemies of the American way of life. In fact, the experiment ended when the reporters found themselves surrounded by a dozen or so passers-by who were shaking their fists at them and calling them subversive Communists who ought to be thrown in jail.

What the experiment demonstrated is what we already know. Many citizens of the United States pay lip service to their country and its heritage. They claim to be loyal and patriotic in every way. They say they are proud to belong to a country as great as ours. And yet at the same time they haven’t the vaguest notion what the United States Constitution actually says, and they consider the Bill of Rights to be a radical, anti-American document. In other words, these people claim citizenship, but they have not internalized the basic meaning of being a citizen. They claim the privilege, but they will not eat and drink the ethos of United States of America.

The same sort of thing is described in this week’s Gospel. Jesus says, I am the living bread that came down from heaven. . . Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Most people probably think Jesus is talking only about communion. He is saying much more. He’s talking about the difference between external lip service and internal embodiment. He’s talking about the difference between admiring him and actually taking up one’s cross and following him. He’s talking about the difference between acting like a Christian on the outside and being a Christian on the inside. He is talking about following him as our Savior and Lord. This Sunday, we will talk about how we can make this journey with Jesus even more meaningful without out losing our courage.

See You in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Kindness Update – Keeping the World Afloat!

With the exception of more serious interpretive dance, a word that most often describes the art of dancing is joy, and that was my thought when I viewed Judi Bouchard’s recent email “Dance like everyone is watching!”. It included a link to a video of movie stars dancing to the popular song, “I’m So Excited!” Watching it convinced me that today’s hip hoppers and break dancers are “copycats” of yesterday’s swing, boogie woogie, Charleston, quick step and jive! It was such fun to watch!

The scripture above from Psalm 30 links dancing with joy, and that seems to be what the non-profit organization Life Vest Inside did when they began an Annual Dance for Kindness event that is held each year during Worldwide Kindness Day in November! Begun in 2012, their 10th annual event had 23 countries to participate and marked a Decade of Kindness. In all, over 65 countries/360 cities worldwide have participated.

Life Vest Inside asks the question, “Who is your life vest? – who is that person who extends to you a “lifeline of kindness” – who sends you hope when you need it?” The slogan of Life Vest Inside is “Because Kindness Keeps The World Afloat”. The purpose of Dance for Kindness is to look beyond ourselves – beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion and realize that we are citizens of the world, and that kindness is the common thread that unites us all.

When you click on the link below, you can view a promotional video about Dance for Kindness. It also is fun to watch! When you watch it, you might be reminded of the One who is our Life Vest and our reason for “dancing, clothed with joy, as we sing praises to Him!” May we all “dance with God”!

The Vulture and the Hummingbird: Be Careful How You Live – Ephesians 5:15-20

This Sunday I will be preaching on wisdom using texts from 1 Kings and Ephesians. To help you prepare I offer you this little mini-sermon based on Ephesians 5: 15-20. Sunday I will talk about King Solomon and how he sought wisdom from God for help as the King of Israel. The mini-sermon is below and begins with a symbolic illustration (Parable) about the vulture and the hummingbird.

There are two birds that fly over our nation’s deserts: One is the hummingbird and the other is the vulture. The vultures find the rotting meat of the desert, because that is what they look for. They thrive on that diet. But hummingbirds ignore the smelly flesh of dead animals. Instead, they look for the colorful blossoms of desert plants. The vultures live on what was. They live on the past. They fill themselves with what is dead and gone. But hummingbirds live on what is. They seek new life. They fill themselves with freshness and life. Each bird finds what it is looking for. We all do.

That is the essence of Paul’s teaching: In life, there are two birds. The one bird looks for foolishness and stupidity, the other looks for wisdom. The vultures seek to fill themselves with the rotting flesh of drunkenness and debauchery, the hummingbird sobriety, freshness, and the Spirit. In the desert of this world you have your scavengers who are angry and ungrateful, but you also have those who hum a grateful hymn of thanksgiving. The irony is that you find what you are looking for.

In the fifth chapter of Ephesians Paul outlines proper behavior for good living. In our short passage he admonishes his readers to be careful how they live. He is brief and to the point. Three things we must do: Be wise, be sober, and be thankful. It’s a short list but if we can orient our daily lives around these three—be wise, be sober, be thankful—we will transform not only our lives but also the lives of our family, friends, church, and neighbors. Amen!

We will learn more about the value of seeking God’s help and wisdom this Sunday in Church.

See you there on online. It will be huge!

Your Pastor,
C. Nels Ledwell

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – “Too Sick to Forgive!”

During the Advent Season in 2004, McCormick Methodist Church published an Advent devotional guide filled with stories from members of the congregation. I ran across my copy of this booklet the other day and enjoyed reminiscing as, other than myself, there were only two other current members among the contributing authors – Emilee Groh and Lindy Stahlman. Centered on Ephesians 4:32, my story was about kindness – “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.” Now 20 years later, since most of you would not have read it before, I’d like to share with you my kindness lesson from my grandson back then! And, as we say here in the South, “Bless his heart!”

“God sometimes uses the people in our lives that we would least expect to get our attention. In one such incident, that person for me was my grandson Ross, who was five years old at the time. While riding with me to run some personal errands that involved making about five stops at the homes of friends, Ross became impatient with his grandmother. Finally, as we drove up at the last stop, he had had about as much as he could take.

‘Me-Ma’, he said in a pitiful voice that only your grandchild could use, ‘you’re making me sick’. I turned around and looked at him as he sat slumped in the back seat. I then told him that I was sorry and asked if he could forgive me. He looked at me very seriously and replied, ‘No, Me-Ma, sick people can’t forgive!’

Because I think that everything he does is just too cute, I couldn’t help but be amused. Then, I thought, he really hit the nail on the head! How many times are we guilty of giving in too easily to the personal “sickness” of pride and jealousy that keep us from being kind to one another, from mending relationships with friends and family members? It truly does seem that sometimes we are too sick to forgive others.

In this scripture from Ephesians, we are reminded that, because God has forgiven us, even though we are sinners, by sacrificing His only Son Jesus Christ … so then should we forgive one another. When we put our trust in Him, He will heal our personal “sickness” and show us how to love each other.

This week’s Kindness entry: The son of one of my bridge buddies noticed that the screened wire was coming loose in two different areas of my screened in porch when he came to pick his mother up. He couldn’t help but notice the wooden shelving unit that I had propped up against the screen to keep it from tearing even more! Not only did he offer to repair the screen for me, but he also actually returned on that next Saturday with nails, hammer, and a staple gun in hand! And I, in response to his prompt act of kindness, couldn’t help but cry! He had it fixed in about 30 minutes!

The Greatest Truth

There is an old story about the theologian, Karl Barth [pronounced “Bart” with a soft “t”], who was on a speaking tour of the United States. On college campuses all across this country, he was drawing huge crowds to hear his very complex answers to the questions of life.

When he was speaking at Princeton University, the great hall was packed with faculty, students, and visitors who came to hear Karl Barth speak. During the question-and-answer period, one student asked, “Dr. Barth, may I ask you a personal question?”

Dr. Barth smiled and said, “Yes, you may ask anything.”

The student then asked, “Dr. Barth, you are a very educated man. What is the greatest truth you have ever learned?”

Dr. Barth bowed his head, thinking for a moment about how he would respond. Then, he raised his head and looked out at the student who asked the question and he said, “The greatest truth I ever learned was at my mother’s knee: ‘Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.’” Coming from a theologian like Barth, this answer is extraordinary. After all his studying, reading and writing of complicated theology, he comes right back to the simple truth of Jesus.

The secret of effective living is to discover the truth about Jesus Christ. When we focus on him, we have discovered that truth is a caring love, truth is the Word becoming flesh. Truth is experiencing his life-giving power. Truth is discovering his love with arms outstretched to embrace us. When we grasp this truth, we have discovered the secret to effective living.

Come to Church and bring a neighbor or friend this Sunday. We all need the truth of Jesus Christ!

See You in Church or online!

Nels

Kindness Update – Kindness Puts A Song in Our Hearts!

I just received a beautiful gift from two of my and Jessica’s best friends – Ed and Linda (Jessica’s all-time favorite BFF!) Bowser. Once very active members at McCormick Methodist Church, today they are faithful online worshipers. Years ago, they served as coordinators for family ministries at MMC, and they coordinated many fun group trips to the beach, mountains, Charleston, etc., and there was never a dull moment, and lots of good memories!

The gift is a CD of beautiful Christian music performed by their daughter, Kerri Bowser of Charlotte, NC. Kerri’s daughter Amanda went to be with Jesus this past December, and the CD – titled Songs from the Heart – comes from the season of that loss. These are the words of Kerri’s dedication:

“Each song in this collection has its own heartbeat. It is found in the message of the lyrics and the music. Much like Ecclesiastes 3: 1 – “To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under Heaven … (2) A time to be born and a time to die… (4) A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance”. May you find within these songs the message that touches your heart in the season you find yourself.

I dedicate this collection to those who have and continue to fill my heart. First, to the one who sustains me in both good and difficult times, whose words truly are the lamp unto my feet, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; To my daughter, Amanda Lynn, though in Heaven, know I carry you with me everyday and rejoice in the knowledge that you suffer no more pain and in the promise I will see you again; To my boys, Foster and Jake, I love you more than simple words can say. I thank you for your strength, your laughter, and the light each of you are in my life. To my family, my church, and my friends for unending prayers. Finally, to Kevin … a man of God who has shown me how love can make a heart beat again.”

Kerri shares her testimony in song to churches and nursing homes, no doubt giving beautiful encouragement to many during the seasons of their lives. I played the CD through twice, just letting the heartbeat of its message soak into my heart. If anyone would like to borrow it to have a listen, I am happy to share it with you. You will be blessed! Thank you, Ed and Linda, for your kind, giving spirits, and to Kerri for putting these beautiful songs in our hearts! May God continue to bless your ministry!

This week’s Kindness entry: A fellow church member who is one of God’s quiet and kind servants observed that there was no one on the list to provide flowers for church service and went out and purchased a bouquet of fresh flowers and arranged them in a vase then added some decorative tissue and placed them on the pedestal in the sanctuary. I don’t know if anyone else observed this, but I did, and I wanted to make known this beautiful and selfless act of kindness!

Words of Encouragement

Steven Morris was a special needs child in Mrs. Bernaducci’s class. Steven was a thin African-American boy who was blind. His handicap negatively impacted his self-esteem. However, over a period of time, the teacher realized that Steven had exceptional hearing.

One day she put the class mascot, a mouse, into the trash can. The scratching noise created a minor panic until Steven located the mouse. Mrs. Bernaducci exclaimed: “Steven, you are truly a wonder.”

The nickname caught on. The next year little Stevie Wonder, full of a sense of his own value, began playing the piano. Stevie ‘Wonder’ would go on to influence and change American music all because of Mrs. Bernaducci’s faith and encouragement.

We all need that kind of encouragement. Especially in times like this. Times that try our souls. Times that cause stress and uncertainty. Times when we want of word of direction from God but God seems to be silent.

We need a word of encouragement. And that’s what we get when we come to our Church. A little bit of bread and a little bit of wine remind us that Christ died for us to prove God’s love for us. A little reminds us of how great our God really is. A little preaching reminds us that if we believe in Jesus we will live forever in Heaven. A little fellowship reminds us that we are loved and have help when we are down.

Come to Church and get a little encouragement this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Kindness Update – This Teacher’s Got Class!!!

It’s that time of year when students are returning to school and with that comes the need to keep the schools in our prayers. When you search for “teaching kindness in the classroom”, you find that the number one tip is to model being kind to others, and for teachers, I guess that would begin with their students. With that thought in mind, the article below that appeared on the July 28 Good News Network website especially caught my attention. The article, entitled Third Grade Teacher Crocheted Mini Versions of Every Student in Her Class for End of Year Gifts, is a great example of modeling kindness in the classroom! As you read it, I think you will agree:

An elementary school teacher crocheted a miniature version of all the pupils in her class to honor each individually with a personalized gift as the year ended. Sara Shabir started the project in May and presented the tiny lookalikes to her third graders this month when classes ended at Tyndale Community School, in Oxford, England. Each of the 30 keepsake dolls took her around eight hours to create—a total of 240 hours.

The 32-year-old took up the hobby during COVID-19 lockdowns—and when the end of term was approaching this year, she had so much love for the kids in her class, she wanted to give them something special to remember their time together. “I feel a massive sense of accomplishment in completing this project—and the joy the children showed when they saw them was worth everything,” she said on Instagram.

A parent of one of the students, Joanna Borysiak, shared the photo (above), which went viral, calling her daughter’s teacher ‘the absolute GOAT’. “She single-handedly crocheted a mini-me of each kid in her class… Even the hairstyles and clothes are spot on. What a legend.” When Sara actually unveiled the dolls, her students were “shocked and amazed”. “They were very grateful,” she said. Undoubtedly, Sara is a teacher that students—and fellow-teachers— will fondly remember for a long time.

I would like to personally add my feeling that the Love of Jesus shown to these students will no doubt grow in their hearts so that they will share that Love with others!

This week’s Kindness entry: When I took my wife to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta recently for an appointment, I was very moved by an incident that occurred in the elevator. We were going to the second floor – another occupant was also going to the second floor. The next person to board the elevator asked for the fifth floor. I was nearest to the controls, so I began to punch in the desired floors. My eyes aren’t as sharp as they used to be, and the elevator lighting seemed dim, so I said, “I’m having trouble seeing in the dark”. Right after that, a voice behind me echoed, “I have trouble seeing in the dark, too”. Then he began to laugh very loudly. When we deboarded the elevator, I was surprised to realize that the man behind me was blind! At that point, I was reminded that we are often more aware of our own problems than the problems of others!

Our Need For Prayer And Communion With God

While doing some research I found this article. Author Unknown but I share it with you.

Back in the thirteenth century, the German king, Frederick II, conducted a diabolical experiment intended to discover what language children would naturally grow up to speak if never spoken to.

He thought it would be German. Some things are just obvious, right? So King Frederick took babies from their mothers at birth and placed them in the care of nurses who were forbidden to speak in their hearing. But a second rule was imposed, as well: the nurses were not allowed to touch the infants. To his great dismay, Frederick’s experiment was cut short, but not before something tragically significant regarding human nature was revealed. As you may have guessed, the babies grew up to speak no language at all because they died.

In the year 1248, an Italian historian named Salimbene di Adam recorded, with an air of scientific observation, “They could not live without petting.” The babies literally died for want of touch.

Astounding!

Modern medicine calls this phenomenon, “failure to thrive.” What you and I know is that the first language of our humanity is not a language; it’s not even touch. Our first langauge is love. For some reason, we humans flourish under the influence of love and we gradually die without it. The implications of this fact are huge.

Consider the research of Dr. Dean Ornish, the founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in California. In his national best seller, Love and Survival, Ornish presents study after study demonstrating that love is a chief influence for mental, emotional, and even physical health. He summarizes the unexpected message of the rapidly accumulating body of data: “Anything that promotes feelings of love and intimacy is healing; anything that promotes isolation, separation, loneliness, loss, hostility, anger, cynicism, depression, alienation, and related feelings often leads to suffering, disease, and premature death from all causes” (Dean Ornish, Love and Survival, p. 29).

We are literally engineered for love. We are made for love, as if our DNA contains the message, “You must love and be loved in order to survive.” But why? Why love. Science says that’s a mystery. For them the “mystery remains. No one can fully explain, why love and intimacy matter so much.”

Let me let you in on a little secret. We know why. We know that we are made in the image of God. And if God is love, so are we.

Take time to Love and be Loved!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Kindness Update – Kindness at the Beach!

This giant billboard caught my eye while vacationing at Myrtle Beach. It’s located at one of the main entrances to Broadway at the Beach, a popular outdoor shopping and entertainment center of 300 plus acres of theaters, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels, amusement parks, and more than 100 specialty shops. At first, I thought, “why just kindness for today and tomorrow – why not always?” Then I thought, that is always – we can’t have a “do-over” for yesterday (but we can try to make things right afterwards), so today and tomorrow are what we have!

It seems fitting that the ad promotes an injury law firm; no doubt, they encounter many situations where a little kindness would help! I googled “kindness and the legal profession” and found the following on the Attorney at Work website:

“Kindness. It can quietly overwhelm…. Kindness can make differences seem insignificant. and it is astonishing to contemplate the ways kindness has knit our diverse worlds together through the centuries”. It was noted that Attorney at Work proposed that 2011 be the year to explore kindness as a universal business principle that binds clients and colleagues.

Myrtle Beach, with 60 miles of Grand Strand beaches and 32 golf courses, is the most enticing attraction in South Carolina where up to 14 million tourists visit each year and another 41,000 residents live year-round. It’s encouraging to realize the maximum exposure this billboard gets – wouldn’t it be great if they were everywhere? It just might help us to remember the words of Paul in Ephesians 4: 32And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Kindness Entry This Week: The young waitress who served us at Cracker Barrel this past Saturday was very attentive and pleasant, and I made sure to tell her when we were finished that she did a great job. As I was checking out, I looked at my ticket and I saw that she had signed her name, Jennifer, followed by the words “God Bless!”. That said a lot to me about that young lady!

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

A Wonderful Prayer Walk!

Some years ago I visited with a close friend, who is a retired pastor that often attended the Church I was serving. He told me that one of his favorite things to do every day was to walk for about 3 hours in the country. I asked him what he thought about each day during those three hour walks. I admit I was unprepared for the answer. In his answer he credited another pastor, Kenneth W. Collins for helping him in his daily walks and to pass the time.

How did he make these walks even more meaningful? Using Rev. Collins’ outline listed below, he used the walking Lord’s Prayer. Here are his words.

“On my walks sometimes I devote the time to prayer, and I have found that the Lord’s Prayer makes a good outline. Here’s how I do it:

I address God as my Father by adoption through the grace of Jesus Christ and give thanks for His salvation.

I pledge to keep His name holy in all my conduct. I remind Him of ways I have done this in the past, and ask Him forgiveness for all the ways I have failed to do so as well.

I ask that His will be done, here on earth through me, as efficiently as it is done by His angels in heaven. I give examples of how I think I could do that; I ask His guidance and pledge my obedience.

I ask for my material needs for the day, itemizing and discussing them. I give thanks for specific instances of His providence in the past.

I ask forgiveness, but only to the degree I am willing to forgive others. If I have a problem, I discuss it in detail.

If I am facing any particular temptations, I discuss them and ask God to help me resist them. If I have recently survived any tough tests, I discuss them and thank God that He gave me the power to overcome them.

I tell God about the evil things that frighten me, and ask Him to deliver me from them. I also give thanks for past rescues.

You get the idea. When you pray like this, it’s amazing how time flies!”

Are you spending time praying with God?

See you in Church or online this Sunday.

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Remembering All of God’s People!

Not only did I enjoy Jesus’ gift of Freedom last week, spending beach time with my family– I also enjoyed the beautiful gift of shared kindness stories, and I think you will, too! Special thanks to Sue Mitchell and Judi Bouchard for stories 1 and 2 – and to the special friend who sent the website kindness entry – all these heartwarming stories remind us to care for all of God’s people!

Kindness Story 1: In 2006, Gordon Hartman observed his daughter, Morgan, wanting to play with other vacationing kids at a hotel swimming pool, but the kids were leery of Morgan and didn’t want to interact with her. Then and there, Gordon resolved to create opportunities and places where those with and without disabilities can come together for fun and a better understanding of one another.

On April 10, 2010, Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas became the world’s first theme park designed with individuals with special needs in mind -a place where everyone can play! From a wheelchair-accessible Ferris wheel to catch-and-release fishing, there is truly something for everyone!

In 2017, the Ultra-Accessible™ theme park opened its expansion, Morgan’s Inspiration Island, named on TIME Magazine’s 2018 “World’s Greatest Places” list. Through the power of inclusive play, the park strives to bring together guests of all ages and all abilities. Sue reported seeing that some friends were on their way to this park as a gift from someone in their church -a nice gesture!

Kindness Story 2: (From a favorite source-READERS’ DIGEST) “Among the more heart-wrenching scenarios is a funeral that no one attends. Andy Jackson, of Dundee, Scotland, is on a crusade to make sure no one dies unremembered. He attends funerals that others don’t, even going as far as to say a few words about the deceased-often in the form of poetry gleaned from whatever info he can find. Sometimes a photo of the deceased. He calls his endeavor the Lonely Funerals project and hopes it spreads. “If we want to live in a humane country”, he says, “these are the little things we can do for people”.

Website Kindness Entry This Week: As Linda writes about each week, kindness can spread to others without our knowing. We were with our son in NC and very worried about leaving him and his wife. Soon, one call after another from friends and neighbors poured in. One neighbor mowed the lawn, another set up a schedule of friends to walk their dog, and yet more brought food over. We were able to leave, knowing they were being quietly taken care of!
