WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAYS AT 10AM

Hello McCormick Methodist Church Family,

It is a great joy and honor to have the opportunity to serve you as your next Pastor. Growing up in a Christian family, I was always intrigued and interested in the life of faith and my call to ministry has taken me from active life in Church and Youth Group to leadership in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Intervarsity Christian fellowship, to Seminary, to Jerusalem, Israel-Palestine, to Ministry, and now here. Serving our Lord is something I do not take lightly and hopefully over a period of time my commitment to prayer and respect for all human persons, their relationships, and families will show. Every human life is a sacred gift, but not everything humans are Christ-like behavior. As a follower of Jesus, I believe living a Christ centered life is the most fulfilling life a person can have.

As person of faith, my daily desire is to Take One Step Closer to Christ and encourage others to do the same. Some of the most profound influences I have had in my life besides Jesus have been people like John Wooden, Lou Holtz, Coach K, and Nick Saban. John Wooden’s pyramid of Success, Lou Holtz’ doing the right thing, Coach K’s golden standard, and Nick Saban’s process of being champion has an impact on my thinking. Thanks to the influence of a Pastor back home in Indiana, the phrase Take One Step Closer to Christ has served as a good reminder to me about why I am here and doing what I do. In the weeks and months ahead, you will begin to hear me reference this phrase. Feel free to use it during your day and as a form of your communication in your daily walk.

Currently, our church has a lot of “new” going on. A new Pastor a new association with a denomination and an upcoming new year. With newness comes change and not all change is good, but only change that leads towards closer relationship with Jesus Christ and our loved ones gives us long lasting fulfillment. We are all aware that our time on earth is limited and we have a wide variety of ways in which we can spend it. Some will spend it on themselves and others on their families, their relationships, and/or on various causes. Through how we choose to spend our time, let us remember that the greatest thing a person can do is to serve our Lord and be one with him. There have been many people who have contributed to the ministry here and great ways and as we enter into this new time, let us remember when we make decisions to make them in such a way that leads us to Take One Step Closer to Christ.

Before I close, I would to give you an update on what is going to take place with our transition from an Independent Methodist Church to a Global Methodist Church (GMC) as well as address a topic of conversation that has come up in a handful of conversations I have had with people since I have been here.

First, as there is a small team of members who will be initiating the application and transition to the GMC. Once this application is submitted and received by the GMC, I will be in contact with the GMC on my next steps on the engagement with the GMC. This will likely take shape in a variety of forms. As that relationship occurs and evolves, I will be in proper communication with the leadership here at our church. This will be an ongoing conversation and if you would like to know further details, please feel free to ask. Later this month, there is a Church Council meeting being held and at that meeting further matters of the GMC will be discussed as well as future plans of ministry at this church. Please keep our leadership and church in prayer as this evolves.

Next, since arriving to McCormick, I have been blessed to have had a lot of good conversations with many people and there are so many people to thank. I am grateful for these conversations and for all of you who have welcomed me in the way that you have. However, do to whatever reason it may be, the topic of “politics” have come up as well as some things that has happened in the past. On “politics,” I perceive the purpose of “politics” is really about policies in which govern people for the sake of human flourishing. “Politics” have no place in the church, but conversations surrounding both the World, National, State, County, and Local news is natural and normal and will occasionally appear amongst people in the church. As a Pastor, I am associated with Jesus Christ, not a political party. The Church does stand for certain things and there are churches that do to lean one way or another depending on its denominational affiliation. But, for me, personally, my commitment is to Jesus Christ and the ministry of Christ.

As a Methodist Pastor, I have a connection to John Wesley and how he communicated the Gospel. As a soon to be Global Methodist Pastor, you need to know that I will be influenced by the language of the Global Methodist Church as well. But, in light of this connection, you need to know that ultimately my commitment is to Jesus Christ and his ministry. There are going to be times in which you will agree with things that I say and do, and everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. However, let us remember that our church is here to participate in the ministry of Jesus and our ultimate aim is Take One Step Closer to Christ both individually and collectively.

In conclusion, it’s great to be here and I look forward to serving as your Pastor.

In Jesus’ Name,

Pastor Jake Weber

Lay Leader’s Corner

As I was doing my daily devotion this morning, I started thinking of this Christmas season! I find when we meditate on the greatness of our Lord, we see that God reveals Himself in so many ways. Are you aware of all that He has done for you and our world? Are your eyes open? Are your ears open? Is your heart open? Meditate on the things he has revealed to us. Take time to notice that God has been at work in our lives since creation.

Now, at this special Advent Season, as we prepare for God’s climactic chapter…our Savior’s arriving on earth…take the time to rest in His promises. Know that today when you hear His voice – listen to Him, be aware and open your hearts to the beauty & promise this blessed Christmas brings. Rest in the promise that God is among us. (Hebrews 4:7) We, the Church are God’s House and it’s our job to share our hope, peace, and joy in Christ!
(Hebrews 3:6)

Prayer is answered,

Volunteers Needed for Congregational Care Team

Dear Church Family,

One of the most powerful ways we reflect the love of Christ is by caring for one another in times of need. Whether someone is recovering from surgery, facing a difficult season, or navigating a time of grief, small
acts of kindness—like a hot meal, a ride to an appointment, or a friendly visit—can make a world of difference.

We are currently building a list of volunteers who are willing to step in when needs arise. You don’t need to commit to every request—just let us know how you feel called to help:

Meal Ministry – Provide or deliver a home-cooked or store-bought meal to someone in need.

Transportation Help – Offer rides to church, appointments, or errands for those unable to drive.

Visitation Ministry – Visit homebound members or those in the hospital or care facilities to provide companionship and encouragement.

If you’re willing to be on our list of helpers in any of these areas, please send Kim Jackson an email  or add
your name/email to the sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall.

You’ll be contacted as needs arise, with the opportunity to accept or decline depending on your schedule.

Let’s continue being the hands and feet of Jesus—loving one another well in both big and small ways.

In Christ’s love,
Your Congregational Care Team

Leader’s Corner

Some thoughts on Jonah

It seems that Jonah didn’t want God’s compassion to go out to people who he didn’t like or didn’t care for. He wasn’t even bothered about the lives of the sailors in the storm who were in danger of drowning. Jonah was like the older son in the story of the Prodigal son. Remember how angry he was when the father welcomed him back?? But think a moment on Jonah’s lovely description of God as being someone who is “gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in mercy, and a God who relents from sending disaster.”
Surely that’s the attitude God wants us also to have towards people who are helplessly lost in sin. Are there people whose well-being we show less interest in? Do we pray more for family and friends before angry strangers? Do we try and reach out to a neighbor who is a real nuisance and who we don’t get along with? The life of Jonah reminds us that there aren’t some people who don’t deserve God’s mercy, and others who do. No – everyone deserved to be saved! Sin puts us all on the same level. That’s what grace is all about. It is God’s mercy to the undeserving. That’s good news!

ELDER BASKET CAMPAIGN

It is that time of year we normally have our annual drive to provide Elder baskets to the Native American Elders in need. Time has gotten ahead of us this year, but we can still provide a monetary donation to the Keepers of the Word who will purchase the needed commodities and deliver them to the various South Carolina tribes. With the rising prices of basic commodities, the need for Elder Baskets is greater than ever. The Native American Elders are very proud and will never ask for help no matter how desperate their situation becomes. The feedback we have received in the past is their look of joy when finding things like toilet paper is heartwarming. We regret not having the time to conduct our normal campaign of collecting and putting the baskets together, but that should not stop us from helping the Native American Elders over the holidays. If you would like to make a monetary contribution, make a check out to MMC and put “Elder Baskets” in the memo line of your check. You can leave your check in the offering plate, take it to the office or mail it to the church at MMC P.O. Box 267, McCormick, SC, 29835. You can also donate to the Elder Basket fund online at the McCormick Methodist Church web site. Please have your donation into us by November 23rd. We pray this will show our Native American friends our shared “Love of Christ” at Christmas.

Greetings Congregation,

Our church will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting on November 16th 4pm in the sanctuary. Unlike our previous meeting, this will be an open mike event giving a chance for both sides of the question to express their opinions. Mike Evans will be present representing Global. We hope this will also give members who missed the last meeting an opportunity to learn about both forms of organization. Please attend if you can.

Let’s make this a joyous afternoon for those of us not planning to leave town and don’t have family close by.

We’ll eat at 1:00 and enjoy each other’s fellowship.

Bubble Up !!

I hope some of you were able to take home my image and thoughts with the bubbles! One of the characteristics of a Spirit-filled person is that they are in constant joy that they want to share even if it isn’t on a Sunday!! After your daily devotional don’t you find yourself humming with joy, bubbling up to start your day?? I do. I get up and dash out of the house determined to carry the Word with me. When you walk in the Spirit there’s a song in your heart, a desire to live in harmony with all you meet. It isn’t easy to keep that “love” going, I know only too well. At the
first snarky (or my perception of that) comment I sometimes crash and forget all I started out to do.

The secret I think is “gratitude.” Being grateful for all that you have will help you float —in an inner tube if you need one—on top with the bubbles!! Be the person God wants you to be!!! Speak kindly to people this week, smile when you see anyone or anything that God created and step out with the faith that you are a child of God!! See the people around you as they really are, children of God also.

POINSETTIAS FOR CHRISTMAS

For the Christmas holidays we will be decorating the sanctuary with beautiful red poinsettias. If you would like to purchase them in memory or in honor of someone please fill out the form in the bulletin or if you’re not attending church include your information with a check for $6.50 per poinsettia. Remember the LAST DAY for ordering is November 12th.

Your poinsettia(s) may be picked up after the Christmas Eve Service so you can enjoy them at home. If you will be out of town for Christmas please feel free to take them home on Sunday 21st. If you are not interested in taking them home please mark your form and we will share the poinsettias with our shut-ins.

All orders and payment must be received at the church by Wednesday, November 12th. If ordering by mail include the form along with your deposit and mail to McCormick Methodist Church, PO Box 267.

The Congregational Care Committee wants you to know they are there to help you if you ever need transportation, meals or a visitor! Please contact Kim Jackson if you or someone you know needs help or if you would like to be added to the list of volunteers.

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAYS AT 10AM

The Gardner of Time

An old gardener tended a forgotten plot beside A quiet river. He planted seeds each season, some for flowers, some for trees, yet many never sprouted. A curious boy asked why he persisted. The gardener smiled, “even unblossomed seeds teach patience, resilience, and hope.” Years later, the boy returned as a young man, realizing life itself mirrored the garden– the unseen growth, the patience in setbacks, and the joy of tending what matters most.

Be a gardener, take time this week to enjoy what’s important in your life, and enjoy it!

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAYS AT 10AM

From The Lay Leaders Desk

I read this article during the week and wanted to share it.

Please be in prayer for our new Pastor, he or she is out there!!!

An article by John MacArthur
I have never aspired to be known as a theologian, a polemicist, or an academician. My passion is teaching and preaching the Word of God.

Even though I’ve dealt with theological questions and doctrinal controversies in some of my books, I have never done so from the perspective of a systematic theologian. It is of little concern to me whether some point of doctrine fits with this tradition or that. I want to know what is biblical. All my concerns are biblical, and my desire is to be biblical in all my teaching.

Preach the Word
That is how I have approached ministry from the beginning. My father was a pastor, and when I first told him years ago that I felt God had called me to a life of ministry, he gave me a Bible in which he had inscribed these words of encouragement: “Preach the Word!” That simple statement became the compelling stimulus in my heart. It is all I have endeavored to do in my ministry—preach the Word.

Pastors today face a tremendous amount of pressure to do everything but preach the Word. Church growth experts tell them they must address people’s “felt needs.” They are encouraged to be storytellers, comedians, psychologists, and motivational speakers. They are warned to steer clear of topics that people find unpleasant. Many have given up biblical preaching in favor of devotional homilies designed to make people feel good. Some have even replaced preaching with drama and other forms of staged entertainment.

But the pastor whose passion is biblical has only one option: “Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction” (2 Timothy 4:2).

When Paul wrote those words to Timothy, he added this prophetic warning: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth” (vv. 3-4).

Clearly there was no room in Paul’s philosophy of ministry for the give-people-what-they-want theory that is so prevalent today. He did not urge Timothy to conduct a survey to find out what his people wanted. He commanded him to preach the Word—faithfully, reprovingly, and patiently.

In fact, far from urging Timothy to devise a ministry that would garner accolades from the world, Paul warned the young pastor about suffering and hardship! Paul was not telling Timothy how to be “successful,” he was encouraging him to follow the divine standard. He was not advising him to pursue prosperity, power, prominence, popularity, or any of the otherworldly notions of success. He was urging the young pastor to be biblical—regardless of the consequences.

Preaching the Word is not always easy. The message we are required to proclaim is often offensive. Christ Himself is a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense (Romans
9:33; 1 Peter 2:8). The message of the cross is a stumbling block to some (1 Corinthians 1:23; Galatians 5:11), mere foolishness to others (1 Corinthians 1:23). But we are never permitted to trim the message or tailor it to people’s preferences. Paul made this clear to Timothy at the end of 2 Timothy 3: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (v. 16, emphasis added). This is the Word to be preached: the whole counsel of God (cf. Acts 20:27).

Don’t forget to pray each day at 12 noon for our Pastor, our Church, and our World!

Grace & Peace,
Wendy, your Lay Leader

If you missed church last Sunday or didn’t get your envelope, they were put in the mail this morning. If for some reason, you don’t get your envelope, there are extra letters and pledge cards on the table in the fellowship hall. See you in church on Sunday for the service celebration followed by cake and ice cream.

Your stewardship team

Our Lay Leader, Wendy Kvale is sharing messages on the “Joy of Giving” during this “Stewardship Month”, using scripture and a small, yet powerful book, “The Treasure Principle” by Randy Alcorn, recommended to us by Pastor Nels. We were touched by this section which is the basis of the messages we are enjoying:

“You can’t take it with you, but you can send it on ahead.

There are six keys to this principle:
-God owns everything and I am His money manager.
-My heart always goes where I put God’s money.
-Heaven – not earth- is my home.
-Live not for the dot (life), but the line (eternity).
-Giving is the only antidote to materialism.
-God prospers me, not to raise my standard of living but to raise my standard of giving.

We pray you will join us Sunday October 19 for our service of celebration as we bring our 2026 estimate of giving cards to the altar, then go for cake, ice cream and more sharing and fellowship.

With love in Christ,
Marsha, Don, Lindy, and Ron

TOWN HALL MEETING

McCormick Methodist Church Council is calling a Town Hall meeting for all professing members on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 4PM. With our disaffiliation two years ago, we voted to go independent. At that time, the Global Church was newly forming in South Carolina, and we didn’t have much information about the structure and nature of their vision. Since then, some people are requesting an update on their activity and would like to know if staying independent is the best road to be on.

Please join us, along with Pastor Dan Griswold for an informal Town Hall meeting, Sunday, October 19, 2025 at 4PM. There will be a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. If there is interest in joining the Global Church a Church wide Conference will be held for all professing members to participate in any voting.

Wendy Kvale, VP of Council

CONGREGATIONAL CARE COMMITTEE

The Congregational Care Committee wants you to know they are there to help you if you ever need transportation, meals or a visitor! Please contact Kim Jackson if you or someone you know needs help or if you would like to be added to the list of volunteers.

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAYS AT 10AM

From The Lay Leaders Desk

I found this devotional by Lawrence O. Richards interesting, and I wanted to share it with you.
Matthew 9:1-13

Some folks scoff at Christianity as “pie in the sky by and by.” Others just shrug and say they’ll wait and find out after they die.

When Jesus was here, He made sure no one had to wait to see. He told a paralytic, “Your sins are forgiven.” When some bystanders were upset by this claim, He offered proof. “So that you may know the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” He told the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.”

When the man stood up, and walked, the authority of Jesus was proved. The men of that day knew that Jesus could forgive sins.

But how about our day? The next story is for us. It’s the story of a man named Matthew who sat at a tax booth. In the first century such men were scorned as sinners, and most did extort more money than was due. Jesus came to Matthew’s booth and told him, “Follow Me.” And Matthew got up and followed.

Matthew the tax collector. Matthew, whose friends were the outcasts of pious society, became a follower of Jesus.
This is the proof we see all around us of the fact that when Jesus says, “Your sins are forgiven,” our sins truly are. Forgiveness makes just as dramatic a change in the moral life of the believer as Jesus’ healing did in the frozen limbs of the paralytic.

A world that wants proof that Jesus saves can find it in the transformed lives of those who have accepted Him as Savior.

Personal application: Your life is to be presented to the world as evidence that Jesus saves.

Our Craft Show / Cookie Factory was Huge Success! With at least $2,700 raised for missions, lots of new friends made, and perfect weather- what a blessing!

Thank you for the hours of baking, crafting, grilling, setting up- AND putting the church back into shape for worship on Sunday! Also, thank you to everyone that donated plants, pots, seeds, and yard art for the Plant Sale in the Atrium Saturday. It was a beautiful day, and we were able to find homes for almost every item that was donated. We hope your new treasures brighten your home and gardens!

Stewardship

We pray you will join us this Sunday and share a personal ‘joy of giving’ thought as part of our open mike sharing and then next Sunday October 19 for our service of celebration as we bring our 2026 estimate of giving cards to the altar , then go for cake, ice cream and more sharing and fellowship.

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAYS AT 10AM

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

A Letter to the Congregation
of McCormick Methodist Church

Since 1990, I have written at least nine letters of farewell to places I have served. The first was to the Department of Health where I worked for seven years and the rest to Churches that I have served in ministry for almost 35 years.

As you know my ministry of serving as your pastor will end officially on September 30, 2025. The moving truck arrives Monday, September 29 to move my belongings and myself to Union, SC. My initial plans were to retire fully from the ministry and enjoy my farm. God has other plans. Instead, I am returning to Union to serve Grace Methodist Church during their time of litigation to separate from the United Methodist Church. Thankfully, Grace is in my hometown of Union so I will be close to most of my family and cattle farm.

I have had some wonderful times in my ministry career and many of them were here in McCormick. Serving here for almost 8 years has been a pleasure. You all are wonderful loving people that make up a church that worships the Lord, hears and believes His Word, and abides in love and grace. Many wonderful experiences with you come back to my treasured memories of you. Things like getting to preach and even share a little humor; or the fun banter we have over meals and visits, eating at Papa’s after church, Methodist Men’s meetings, visits, sharing with you in times of sadness and joy and even our committee meetings. Most of all, I have watched us all grow in Christ.

As I move on, I feel I left this Church in better shape than it was when I arrived. I know that your faith will continue to build this Church and grow God’s Kingdom and your ministry will flourish in the future. I leave you in good hands with strong leadership and I know a God-anointed pastor will be arriving soon.

You are all invited to come and visit at Grace Methodist Church in Union and you can watch on their Facebook page if you wish. Good-bye to a wonderful Church family and my God be with until we meet again. Please accept my gratitude and thanks for allowing me to be your pastor.

Your retiring Pastor and friend,
Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

THE PEW POTATO’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, please leave me alone. Just let me sit here in my pew on Sunday, and Lord guard my seat, the last seat here in the back row. Please don’t let anyone else try to sit here Lord… You know that’s my seat and dear Lord please get me home quickly after the service on Sunday, before these church people try to recruit me to actually do something that I don’t want to do. Lord make them understand that I’m happy and content just to show up on Sunday. Heavenly Father, thank you for hearing my prayer but I’ve got to Go! Kickoff is only a minute away!! You understand Lord. …..Oh, and thanks God for putting some great games on this week and thank you for all sports cable channel. See you next Sunday Lord. Amen.

Stewardship

Dear Church Family,

Believe it or not, there is much more to McCormick Methodist Church than what you see on Sunday morning! (Girl Scouts, Bible Studies, needlework, Stephen Ministry, a grocery pantry for our neighbors, building projects, and so much more.) All of these things are planned and prepared by leadership, staff and church family, who are deeply committed to our becoming who God is calling us to be. The ministry and mission of our church take place because of the spiritual and financial gifts of our members and friends.

The decision to give a gift is a choice, but as a joyful follower of Jesus, we want to give – out of thanksgiving for what God has already done, and as a sign of commitment to be a part of the good things that God is continuing to do in our world.

Your gift matters – to you as the giver, and to the church which uses it as a resource for mission building.
As a church family, we are entering a time of deciding what missions we will support in the coming year. There is joy to be found in practicing generosity- and it begins with a simple step of commitment to be part of God’s plan for us.

Our prayer is that you will be with us during our Joy of Giving drive for 2026, maybe share a personal ‘joy of giving’ thought on 10/12, and be present for our Service and Fellowship Celebration on October 19th!

Blessings from your Stewardship team.
