It’s A Lot More Fun If You Open Your Eyes
 
Peter Prange tells a story about how he was afraid to ride a roller coaster.
 
What do you think about roller coasters? When I was a kid, I was deathly afraid of them. We didn’t live too far from Great America, which was the big amusement park in our area. So we would go down there about every summer, but I would never go on a roller coaster with my brother or sister. They would always say, “Come on, you have to try it to see if you like it,” but I was happy riding the bumper cars and the merry-go-round. The psychologists call that having a type B personality. Type A personalities are those folks who love roller coasters. That’s what my sister Susan is like. She’s a definite type A. Type B personalities like me tend to shy away from anything too exciting.
 
But then my senior year in high school came. I was on the student council, and the student council always went to Great America at the end of the year. I hadn’t been there in quite a few years, and so I was looking forward to it. But still I had never ridden on a roller coaster, and for some reason I admitted that to my friends. They couldn’t believe it. “You’ve never ridden on a roller coaster? Well, you’re going to ride on one now.” So I did, and I really did enjoy it. I was excited and terrified at the same time. After that first ride, my friend sitting next to me had one piece of advice. He said, “You know, it’s even more fun if you open your eyes.” You’ve probably heard it said before, “If you don’t keep your eyes open, you’re bound to miss something.” That was me on the roller coaster. It’s a good encouragement that we all need to hear once in a while: Open your eyes.
 
That’s the encouragement that our God is giving us every time we study or hear His Word. He says to the disciples of Jesus – you and me – Open your eyes and look at the glory of Jesus. This Sunday, we will learn about his glory and how to listen and experience huge things.

Kindness Update – Jesus Is Our Lighthouse!

Listening to some gospel music recently, I was amazed at the performance of singer/songwriter Bradley Walker, who was born with muscular dystrophy and has been in a wheelchair all of his forty-plus years. One song that he performed, “The Lighthouse”, especially caught my attention.
 
It brought to mind a cassette tape that I had many years ago – I don’t remember the name of the artist, but I definitely remember that song – The Lighthouse – on the tape – it was the first time I had heard it – but not the last, because I played it many, many more times!
 
I have no idea where that cassette tape is today nor would I have a player to listen to it if I did, so I especially enjoyed hearing Bradley’s version of the song after so many years. Jesus, of course, is the Lighthouse referred to in the song, and I could only imagine how much this song meant to the singer as he faced many difficulties in his life!
 
When I first heard the song many years ago, I had similar thoughts about how much it probably meant to the cassette tape’s previous owner, because when I acquired it, I learned it had been confiscated from a prison inmate. I imagined that its message had probably touched that person’s heart just as it did mine, and I prayed for that to be so!
 
I would like to share that song with you in case you haven’t heard it – even if you have, I’d like you to experience the talent of this young man – I think you will like it. Thank God for the Lighthouse! Just click on the link below:

We left Jonesville, SC at 11am Tuesday the 18th and arrived in Bugiri, Uganda today Friday the 21 st at 6 pm. (With all of our luggage which is an amazing thing).
 
God was so good to us on this journey.
 
Every prayer, call, text was felt and appreciated.
 
Wilbur finally got to see the place we prayed and talked about for months and we had to take a pic of his first run through the yard.

Easter lilies symbolize purity, hope, innocence, and virtue. They represent the purity of Jesus, who was free from sin.
 
Our worship committee has arranged to have Easter lilies in the sanctuary. The cost is $8.50 for a lily in a 6 inch pot.

GAMES WITH FRIENDS

THIRD THURSDAYS 1:30PM

This announcement is for anyone excited about Christian Fellowship and having fun!! Games with Friends will start on March 20th and continue each 3rd Thursday of the month. We’ll meet from 1:30-3:30PM in the fellowship hall and decide on the games of the week to play.
 

NARRATORS NEEDED
EASTER SUNDAY

The chancel choir will be singing a musical for Easter, BECAUSE HE LIVES. This will be at the 10am service at the church.
 
Lindy Stahlman would like to get six narrators to read between the songs. The lines are not long (some very short). You will be using the mike down on the floor, no climbing the stairs to the altar. You will not be wearing a costume. She would love to involve six from our church family to narrate (no memorizing!) the musical for us. Won’t you join us?

Baby Bottles for Crossroads Women’s Center (Greenwood)
The baby bottles for the Crossroad Baby Bottle Campaign are in the Fellowship Hall. There will be a sheet to show who has taken a bottle to fill with coins. Funds raised enable CPC to offer free pregnancy tests, counseling, classes, ultrasounds, Bible Studies, and material assistance such as diapers and clothing. Bottles need to be returned by March 30.
 
Birthdays Lunch at Liberty Hill
The women’s luncheon will be March 14 at Liberty Hill. There will be a buffet for $15. We will meet at 11 a.m. in the church parking lot. All are welcome to bring a friend. There is a sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall so we can give Liberty Hill a head count.
 

YEAR-LONG CHURCH-WIDE STUDY INITIATIVE

Beginning this new year, we’re embarking on a transformative yearlong churchwide study focusing on scripture, Christian living, and discipleship. Designed to inspire spiritual growth and build deeper connections within our church family, this study is available through the McCormick Methodist digital library on RightNow Media.
 
Ways to Get Involved:
  • Sunday School Integration: Adult Sunday school classes will adopt this study as part of their curriculum.
  • Small Groups: Small groups are encouraged to participate by incorporating the study into their gatherings. This would be a great small in home group study. If you would like to participate in this study let Kim Jackson know and she’ll help get you started.

Going Beyond Duty: The Second Mile
 
James Merritt, a great preacher, shared this in one of his sermons. It will serve as a good preparation tool for my message this Sunday.
 
Shortly after the battles ended the American Revolution, but before the peace had been negotiated, George Washington was with his troops in Newburgh, New York. But they began to grow very restless because they hadn’t been paid. Washington had begged the Continental Congress to do what they said they would do and pay the soldiers, but they refused.
 
Well, some of the officers began to organize a rebellion. They talked about marching on Philadelphia, which was at that time the seat of the reigning national government, and overthrowing that government and letting the army rule the nation.
 
With the fate of America in the balance, George Washington made a surprise appearance before these officers. After praising them for their service and thanking them for their sacrifice, he pulled from his pocket a copy of a speech that he wished to read. But then he fumbled with a paper and finally reached for a set of reading glasses-glasses those men had never seen him wear before. Washington made this simple statement: “I have already grown grey in the service of my country, and now I am going blind.”
 
Historian Richard Norton Smith wrote: “Instantly rebellion melted into tears. It was a galvanizing moment, and the rebellion…” and the rebellion was put down because they had seen before them a second miler. Becoming a Christian is one thing; being a Christian is another one. Every chance you get for the glory of Jesus, for the goodness of others, and because of the grace of God, go the second mile.

Kindness Update – A Sense of Humor Brings Smiles!

If it’s true that laughter is the best medicine, then this story is guaranteed to make you feel better! This week’s story is reprinted from Sunny Skyz – All Good News – it was posted on Valentine’s Day – February 14 – which is during Random Acts of Kindness Week. The writer shares that some stories are just too good not to share, and this one is a perfect example of how a simple shopping trip can take a hilarious turn—especially when a retiree with a sharp sense of humor is involved. The story follows:
 
“I cannot shop at Costco anymore.
 
Yesterday I was at Costco buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Necco, the Wonder Dog, which weighs 191 lbs. I was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had – an elephant?
 
So, because I’m retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn’t, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes and IV’s.
 
I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your jacket pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete, so it works well, and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me.
 
I told her no, I relieved myself on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me, I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Costco won’t let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the World to think of crazy things to say.” Share this (especially) with all your retired friends…it will be their laugh for the day!”

How Brave Are We?
 
I have probably shared this story with you before but I love to share it. It is a true, but humorous and slightly scandalous story that comes out of the early days of the church. When the father of Origen, a third century theologian, was arrested for being a Christian, Origen, then only 17, was aflame with the desire to follow his Dad and share in glorious martyrdom. His mother pleaded with him not to go, but the headstrong boy did not want to listen to reason. His quick thinking mother did what she could. She hid his clothes. Though Origen stormed and protested, she wouldn’t reveal where they were hidden. He couldn’t leave the house, and so he was unable to volunteer for martyrdom.
 
Isn’t it interesting? Origen was brave enough to be martyred, but not brave enough to go outside naked. Stepping outside without clothing would have sped up his arrest and imprisonment, but it was a step he was unwilling to take.
 
In a sense, I suspect that talking with a friend about our faith is, for many of us, the equivalent of going outside naked. It makes us uncomfortable. We feel exposed. We declare that we will give our lives for Christ if he should ask it, but to risk a bit of embarrassment for him seems to be beyond our level of discipleship. How sad. Are you willing to be exposed in sharing your Love for Christ?

STEPHEN MINISTRY CORNER

 
Are you a ‘care giver?’ Are you taking care of your spouse, your parent, your child, your grandparent …? Taking care can mean something as simple as driving to a doctor’s appointment … to something as complicated as being responsible for that someone’s every need because they cannot do anything for themselves.
 
So … you are taking care of them … but how about you? Who is taking care of you? Sometimes the care giver totally ignores their own needs and feelings and concentrates totally on their caregiving. Often the care giver needs to talk about their frustrations and feelings … but the caregiving is so overwhelming that they cannot imagine how that can be done.
 
Enter Stephen Ministry … a listening ear who will keep all you say confidential and without judgement of any kind. You need to talk, vent, scream, cry … we will find a way to be there to listen.
 
So, help take care of yourself by allowing yourself the gift of time with a Stephen Minister. The meeting can be anywhere and anytime … you and your Stephen Minister decide how you want to proceed. Kindness Update – Hugging From The Heart!

Random Acts of Kindness Week, according to the RAK website, is February 9-15 this year, and Random Acts of Kindness Day is Tuesday, February 17. I’m not quite sure how they figure that, but what a great idea to make all of us aware of something we should be doing every day – forever and ever – AMEN!
 
Hopefully, you have noticed from the bulletin board at church or the display in the Fellowship Hall the Kindness Week emphasis on hugging – something we all do! The Love of Jesus is what binds our faith , and hugging puts that faith into action as we reflect God’s love for us. The act of embracing another person demonstrates care, comfort, and acceptance, mirroring the divine love we experience through our relationship with God!
 
In today’s world, the physical act of hugging is sometimes replaced by more preferable virtual connections. But the importance of this simple gesture is not diminished. The act of embracing another person goes beyond a mere display of affection; it is deeply rooted in biblical symbolism and carries great spiritual significance. We know this by the Biblical scriptures that tell us of times when Jesus hugged children, His disciples and friends.
 
Some of us may prefer heart-to-heart hugging, yet another way to be present for others and allow others to be present for us. It’s a form of emotional support, a safe space to share our joys and sorrows without judgment. These heartfelt embraces might be in the form of prayers, phone calls, greetings, etc. Regardless of how we choose to hug each other, let us embrace one another with an open heart, thus creating a world where hugging is a language we all speak fluently!

CHURCH BUILDING REPAIRS
FOLLOWING HURRICANE HELENE

The trustees worked to find contractors willing to repair the fascia boards outside. You can see in the picture that they needed very long ladders to get the job done!

The trustees also found contractors that were willing to repair the plaster popcorn ceiling in the sanctuary.. There were water stains from the hurricane in the back of the church, plus in the choir loft. Painters started early on Monday and plan to be done by Saturday night so we can worship under our newly-painted roof on Sunday morning! The job takes a lot of time since everything has to be covered; including the pulpit, windows, pews, altar, piano, carpet and even the hanging lamps!

SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY

FEBRUARY 9

There will be two pots at the February 9 service. One will be labeled Philadelphia Eagles and the other one will be labeled Kansas City Chiefs.
 
Who are you rooting for? Bring some change (bills too!) and fill the pot of the team of your choice! Who do think the majority of our church family will be rooting for? Which pot will get the most money?
 
The big winner will be the McCormick Food Pantry, who will get the money from both pots!

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAYS AT 10AM

The Body, Communion and Love
 
James W. Moore shares this story for all who need a reminder of how the Body of Christ loves her members.
 
It was a cold Christmas Eve a few years ago. Will Willimon, Dean of the Chapel at Duke University, was rushing his family to get in the car. They were running late for the communion service. “Where are the sermon notes? Where is the pulpit robe? Don’t forget to turn off the lights. Everybody get in the car and be quiet!”
 
On the way to the church… rushing through the traffic, their 5-year-old- daughter, Harriet, got sick at her stomach and she up-chucked all over the car. “Great!” Will Willimon thought, “If people only knew what preachers go through.” He wheeled into the church parking lot and jumped out of the car, leaving his wife, Patsy, to clean up the car and get the kids into the church… and he thought, “If people only knew what preachers’ spouses go through.”
 
His wife, Patsy, led a still unsteady and pale Harriet into the church. They sat on the back pew in the darkness… just in case Harriet got sick again. Their son, William, age seven, ran down to the front of the church to sit with his grandparents. Will Willimon threw on his robe, took a deep breath, and joined the choir for the processional. He made it through the first part of the service… and the sermon. Then came Holy Communion. Will Willimon’s wife, Patsy, came down to the altar to receive the sacrament, but she left 5 year old Harriet on the back pew. Harriet was still so pale and so weak and so sick. But then something beautiful happened. Seven-year-old William got up and came back to the communion rail. “What on earth is he doing?” wondered his parents. “He’s already received communion once. What is he up to?” They watched him race to the back of the church and scoot down the pew toward his sister. He opened his hands… revealing a small piece of bread. “Harriet,” he said, “This is the body of Christ given for you.” Without hesitation, little Harriet picked the bread out of her brother’s hands and plopped it into her mouth and said, “Amen.” And in that moment Holy Communion had never been more holy. Then 7-year-old William patted his 5-year-old sister Harriet on the head. He smiled. She smiled. And then he turned and ran back down to the front of the church to re-join his grandparents. (The Christian Ministry, July-August 1989, p. 47)
 
Think of that. Her 7-year-old brother William thought to include her. Either because she wasn’t being included or he thought it might help her feel better he reached out to his sister with what really mattered—the body of Christ in the form of communion. There’s a name for that… it’s called LOVE! What a beautiful thing it is when our children rise to the occasion and teach us once again the power of love, the wonder of love, the miracle of love.
 
This Sunday we will talk about the Body, Love and have communion together.

Kindness Update – Passing Kindness!

Browsing the Good News Network as Super Bowl LIX approaches, it was refreshing to find the kindness story below that puts things in proper perspective in light of all the media hype that is associated with pro football these days. I enjoyed it and thought you might as well.
 
Losing football games often leaves fans wounded, no matter which team you root for—and Baltimore Ravens supporters are all too familiar with the feeling. But out of their blues came this sweet story from the NFL playoffs last week, after a heartbreaking loss to the Buffalo Bills in the final minutes of the Divisional Round game.
 
The next day, a Buffalo Bills fan group set up a GoFundMe campaign that raised a ton of money for a charity in honor of the Ravens player that fans were relentlessly blaming for the loss.
 
Late in the 4th quarter of the Bills’ home game, the Ravens put together a 7-play drive to score a touchdown with less than two minutes on the clock. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, Ravens’ tight end Mark Andrews made his way into the end zone, then caught—but dropped—a pass from his star quarterback.
 
Andrews is one of several players in the NFL born with type-1 diabetes, and his success has seen him make donations to a global research effort called Breakthrough T1D that works to find a cure for the cureless disease.
 
A GoFundMe page to receive donations toward Andrews’ charity was set up by Buffalo Bills players. Setting their goal for $5,000, the call to donate went viral after it was retweeted by the Ravens franchise, which replied, “Shout out to ‘Bills Mafia’ for showing support to our guy Mark Andrews and donating to the organization, which works towards curing and improving the lives of those dealing with type 1 diabetes.”
 
Then, just like the avalanche of criticism online, the kindness snowballed to amass $140,000 for Mark’s favorite charity!
 
This Week’s Kindness Entry: Walking out into the grocery store parking lot the other day, I saw a woman near my car waving her arms in the air. Drawing near, I realized it was an old friend I hadn’t seen in many years. She had locked her keys in her car and needed a ride to the Blood Connection where her husband was making a platelet donation and could drive her back over to her vehicle when finished. We caught up on old times on the way, and when she got out, she said, “your kindness to me should be reported to someone”. I told her I knew just what to do to take care of that!

LAY LEADER CONNECTION

In the Methodist Church we have a position called Lay Leader, and I’m happy to say I’m filling this position! The Lay Leaders’ primary job is to connect with the people of the church, the leadership of the church and the local community. I’m looking forward to talking to you and finding out how you wish to participate in our church activities. Please call me anytime, if you know me, you know I love to talk!!!
 
I’ll be meeting with each of our groups to see what their needs are and how they wish to move forward to help the growth of our church in 2025. At this point I’ve met with our new Worship Leader, Deb Wissinger and the new Fellowship gals, Toni Graham & Nancy Vereb.
 
The fellowship gals have made the decision to take over the decorating of the fellowship hall and Deb from the Worship Team agrees. So, if you have questions regarding what’s happening in the fellowship hall please reach out to Toni &/or Nancy. Please discuss any fellowship hall decorating or needs with them. They’re coming up with some new directions for any volunteer who wants to sign up for the coffee hour which they’ll add to the detailed notebook that’s available for the kitchen help you might need to do a fellowship Sunday.
 
We’re hoping that some of our “groups” or Sunday schools or committees will sign up this year. Fellowship is a major part of any church and is as important as any committee and hopefully easier to do!!!

Usher responsibilities include handing out bulletins, lighting the candles for service, locking the door nearest your station once service begins, lighting and extinguishing candles, and (once a month) assisting with communion. What a lovely way to be Christ’s servant!

Ways to Get Involved:
  • Sunday School Integration: Adult Sunday school classes will adopt this study as part of their curriculum.

Jesus’ Inaugural Speech (Sermon)
 
Mickey Anders, writes that in Luke 4 we find what he calls Jesus’ inaugural sermon. 
 
Every four years the new president of the United States gives his inaugural address. In it, he articulates his program or his plan of action for his term of office. See if you recognize the President who made the following remarks:

He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
 
While many of these Presidents did wonderful work in either 4 or 8 years, Jesus did more in three than any of them. He also made the best speech!
 
I vote for Jesus and pray he will guide our nation and our new President.

Kindness Update – Miracles of Jesus That Keep Giving!

Pastor Nels’ sermon on January 19 gave us a great overview of the story of Jesus’ first miracle found in John 2: 1-11 when He responds to His mother Mary’s concern about the fear of running out of wine at a wedding. She asked Jesus to help, and He turns water into wine. Pastor Nels explained that John tells us that this miracle was a sign to us of Jesus’ respect for his mother, that He was always filled with compassion (and kindness!) and wanted to help keep the wedding celebration going. It was also a sign that God’s blessings are available through Him, the Christ, and that in Christ we are abundantly blessed.
 
Further, we learn that God provides our greatest needs, inducing optimism about the future. Just as Jesus used the servants to help by filling the unclean pots with water, so does He involve us in accomplishing His miracles today. The unclean pots he used remind us that Jesus takes the worst of us and transforms us into something beautiful and wonderful! Hooray for Jesus! Hooray for us!
 
There is a transforming redemption story that comes to my mind as I think about this miracle of Jesus. It is found in the words of a popular country song that reached the top of the Christian Country Music chart in 1998. The song is “Wine Into Water” by T. Graham Brown who struggled with bipolar disorder and alcoholism. He stopped drinking and this song came from that experience. He credits God and his wife Sheila of 45+ years for his ability to win those battles. Any Place is Good for Ministry
 
Once I read an article about a man named Paige Patterson. Paige was removed from the Southern Baptist Convention for making rude comments to women. While this was unfortunate, he did make a great contribution to evangelism and ministry. Paige’s style of ministry and even his theology may not exactly fit ours, but Paige cares about people. Paige ministered to troubled youth in ways that no one else did. He would go to places where youth were, like bars, nightclubs and the streets. At first the people in his church were in shock. This was a new experience and a new ministry for them. But soon they got over their shock and got on board and began a campus ministry to reach out to youth. And the youth responded positively: they liked having people from the church meet them where they were without getting obnoxious.
 
One night Paige was asked to leave a nightclub because, the manager told him, he was running off his business. Paige says it was no big deal. Anyway, as he stepped out onto the front porch, Paige noticed a big man sitting there with a can of beer in his hand, who was a bouncer for the club. “Looks like it’s been a rough night,” Paige said casually. The big man nodded and said it indeed had been.
 
“I don’t want to offend you,” Paige told him, “but if you died where you’re sitting right now, would you be in heaven or hell?” The man instantly crushed the can he was holding, and beer shot everywhere. “I can’t believe you asked that question,” he said in disbelief. “I was just sitting here thinking how I was going to kill myself when I got home.”
 
“There’s no reason to do that,” Paige told him, “nothing’s that bad.” Then Paige began to witness to the man about his faith in Jesus Christ. He told the man that God still loved him. And the two men talked for the next thirty minutes. The next Sunday this man went to church and committed his life to Jesus Christ.
 
Somehow I can see Jesus doing that kind of ministry if he were with us here physically today. Oh, not just in night clubs. But in offices and in living rooms and at Little League ball games – any place he could be with and get to know people. Jesus cares about people. That means he cares about you and me. Don’t be put off by the formality of “church.” Look beyond the robes and rituals. Look to a risen Savior who gave his life for only one purpose: people.
 
Ten Basic Statements about ministry: (with credit to Warren and David Wiersbe)
 
1. The foundation of ministry is character.
2. The nature of ministry is service.
3. The motive for ministry is love.
4. The measure of ministry is sacrifice.
5. The authority of ministry is submission.
6. The purpose of ministry is the glory of God.

Kindness Update – Thank You, God!

 
Our thoughts and prayers lately have certainly been with our neighbors on the west coast as the devastating wildfires have raged in southern California. Among the many stories that have surfaced – some sad, some bad – the ones that always “rise to the top” are the many uplifting stories of people helping people – reaching out in kindness – and here are just a few. These stories make you want to look up like these two young boys and say, “Thank you, God!”
 
During the California fires, some churches held special services to help people heal. The fires reportedly destroyed at least a dozen houses of worship.
 
As the Eaton Fire raged through neighborhoods in Altadena, California, good Samaritans grabbed garden hoses, fire extinguishers and kitchen pots, dumping as much water as they could onto houses in a desperate bid to save them from the intense flames.
 
As people were evacuating in Pacific Palisades, a group of them saw that a local senior center needed help evacuating patients. A group of men gathered to help move patients to a nearby parking lot where they could be picked up for transport. Some of the patients had to be carried out of the facility. There were around 90 patients who were evacuated.
 
A reporter captured one firefighter who hopped over a fence to save a horse from the approaching flames. The firefighter made sure the horse was placed in a safe area away from the fires and any other dangers.
 
A dad and daughter who chose to and were able to stay in their home helped evacuees learn whether their homes survived the California wildfires. Even as homes just over a block away burned, and as their neighbors who did flee are kept away by police or military barricades, they took it upon themselves to check on their neighbors’ homes for them.
 
To express support and encouragement to others affected by the fires, actor, producer, director, and writer Anthony Hopkins, who lost his home in Pacific Palisades, shared this Instagram message: “As we all struggle to heal from the devastation of these fires, it’s important we remember that the only thing we take with us is the love we give.”
 
Praise God for His reminders of His Lovingkindness even during such devastation!

Hello from training!
 
We’ve just completed our first week of training at Center for Intercultural Training (CIT) in Union Mill, NC! Thank you for all your prayers this week, and to those who checked in on us.
 
This week was a focus on Spiritual Formation for us individually and as a family. Learning new rhythms for our family, being in close living quarters, eating every meal together, seeing each other in the middle of a weekday have been new experiences for us but very special moments.
 
Matt and I have spent a lot of time this week, thinking, praying and spending much needed special moments with our Savior. We have gotten to practice gratitude, pray in examens, spend time in the scripture with Lectio Divina, and write out prayers of confession. Each session and topic were a new and wonderful way of worshipping our Lord.
 
So how about you? When was the last time you had a special time with the Lord? The weather this weekend seems to have slowed us all down, maybe God’s waiting for you? We read the story of the blind man this week in Mark. We have read that story several times in our lives but this was the first time we read it and realized that Jesus simply is standing in front of a man and asking “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:46-52). He may be standing in front of you asking the same, the question is how will you answer Him?
 
Please let us know how we can pray for you, it helps us to pray specifically when we have you in mind, so reply to this email and let us know.
 
Prayer Request for us:
  • Please pray for our time in training to continue to be fruitful, and that we will give each other grace as we each process this transition and the one to come.
  • We have some big items to sale soon (car, camper) and we ask for prayers that God be in control of these transactions, so they are glorifying to Him.
  • We are in need for suitcases for our trip to Uganda, if anyone has a large suitcase, they want to part with please let us know or pray we find some.

Beginning this new year, we’re embarking on a transformative yearlong churchwide study focusing on scripture, Christian living, and discipleship. Designed to inspire spiritual growth and build deeper connections within our church family, this study is available through the McCormick Methodist digital library on RightNow Media.
 
Ways to Get Involved:
  • Sunday School Integration: Adult Sunday school classes will adopt this study as part of their curriculum.
  • Small Groups: Small groups are encouraged to participate by incorporating the study into their gatherings. This would be a great small in home group study. If you would like to participate in this study let Kim Jackson know and she’ll help get you started.

There is an odd little carol which is sometimes sung on this first Sunday after Christmas. It begins:
 
There’s snow on the mountain and ice on the pond,
The Wise Men are home now in the back of beyond.
The Shepherd’s have left us; the heavens are dumb;
There’s no one to tell us why Jesus has come.
 
It ends:
 
But God’s in His heaven, and Jesus has come
To show every sinner he’s welcome back home,
To be this world’s Saviour from hunger and fear,
And give us new courage to face the New Year.
 
We have courage to face this New Year because of Jesus. He is Immanuel—God with us and for us.
 
May 2025 be a great year for us as we serve the Lord and make disciples.

Spreading Christmas Joy at Forest View Manor!

 
Our Congregational Care Team had a wonderful time visiting the residents and staff at Forest View Manor during the Christmas season! Marc Heyman played Christmas carols on his guitar, filling the room with music and joy. The residents were so happy to sing along to familiar tunes.
 
A big thank you to John Yerdon for baking a delicious Christmas cake that everyone enjoyed, and to Linda Vietri for her thoughtful handmade cards, crocheted shawls and ornaments for each resident and staff member. Her kindness brought smiles to many faces!
 
We’d love for YOU to join us on our monthly visits to Forest View Manor! ️ We go on the first Tuesday of every month, meeting at the church at 1:30 PM. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share Christ’s love and brighten someone’s day. If you’d like to join us see Mary Thompson for details.
 
 

Kindness Update – Follow the Star!

Epiphany was Monday, January 6, marking the arrival of the Three Wise Men who had followed the Star of Bethlehem to see Baby Jesus with their rich gifts and showing to the world that Christ is the greatest gift to all humanity. We know the familiar story of the lowly shepherds who had also followed the Star to see Jesus after a visit by an angel of the Lord while they tended their flocks in the countryside. You might say the shepherds were also “wise men” for seeking Jesus as the angel instructed though they were frightened at first.
 
I believe the message of Epiphany for us today is that God still wants us to seek and follow the “Star” – the Light of Jesus – surrender to Him, invite Him to enter our hearts, and share His Light with others. To help us do that as we enter a New Year, I share the words below that Judi Bouchard shared with me – they give specific suggestions that also spread kindness! Thanks for sharing, Judi!
 
Prepare. Life is short.
Life is short. Tell those you love how much they mean to you.
Life is short. Be generous in forgiving and letting go.
Life is short. Sing with a heart full of joy, even if you sing off-key.

BAPTISM FOR EMMA RUBY COINS

Excitement was high when the church family got to be a part of a Baptism! We have not had a baby baptized in the church since Emma’s sister, Ava, two years ago.
 
We celebrated Emma starting her spiritual journey at our church! There were a lot of smiles, especially when Emma decided to cry loudly (what a wonderful sound in the church!) and Nels was able to settle her by walking her around and introducing her to each of us!
 
Thank you to the Coins family for sharing such a wonderful experience with us!

Baby Steps.
I heard a sermon over the holidays a few years ago about how we should take ‘baby steps’ when we start to make changes in our lives – not trying to do it all at once and allowing it to overwhelm us. And we do … often … get overwhelmed … with life even when we don’t try to make changes in it!!
 
And, of course, sometimes those changes are not of our making … we didn’t plan to have a family member get a devastating diagnosis, or to get a devastating diagnosis ourselves, or have a death in the family, or struggle with isolation when winter sets in and it’s too cold to venture out and be social (yes .. even here in South Carolina!!), or lose our job, or be unable to care for ourselves after a surgery … even an elective surgery … you get the point …
 
But, if you are struggling with starting to make a change, you can make a ‘baby step’ that will help you deal with the changes … planned or not. Take the ‘baby step’ of calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders and begin a relationship with a Stephen Minister who wants to walk with you through whatever it is you are struggling with. We may be reached through the church office at (864) 852-2394.

Happenings – December 20, 2024

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAYS AT 10AM

O Little Town of Bethlehem: A Story of Faith
 
Keith Wagner tells the story of one of our favorite Christmas hymns. His story is below.
 
One of my all-time favorite Christmas hymns is “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” It has been around since 1868 although it wasn’t formally used in churches until 1892. It is a hymn which is packed with emotion, a song about the Christ Child, born to Mary, a song filled with the creative power of God intervening in history with the gift of a savior.
 
For me “O Little Town of Bethlehem,” depicts the Christmas story as a story of hope, a story where the divine and the human come together in an amazing but humble way. It is also an invitation for both the non-believer and the believer. For the non-believer it is an announcement of what God has done and for the believer it is a challenge to increase one’s faith.
 
What might surprise you is how this great hymn came to be. It was written by Phillips Brooks, Episcopal priest. Brooks was serving the Holy Trinity Church in the City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia, PA). He had just returned from a trip to The Holy Land which inspired him to write the words. “When he returned to America he still had Palestine singing in his soul.” (from Stories of Christmas Carols by Ernest K. Emurian, Baker Book House Co., page 97)
 
Brooks was a bachelor. His church organist and Sunday School superintendent, Lewis Redner was also a bachelor and Brooks gave the words to him and asked him to create a tune for the upcoming Christmas celebration. Redner procrastinated and struggled with the creation of a tune to go with the 5 stanzas that Brooks had written. It wasn’t until the night before the celebration that Redner got inspired in the middle of the night and created the song as we know it. The following day a group of 36 children and 6 Sunday school teachers introduced the song created by the 2 bachelors. That was on December 27th, 1968. It wasn’t published as an official hymn of the Episcopal Church until 1892. The following January, Phillips Brooks died, never knowing the magnitude of the hymn that he created.
 
For some reason the 4th stanza has been dropped from the original score. “Where children pure and happy Pray to the blessed Child, Where misery cries out to thee, Son of the mother mild; Where charity stands watching And faith holds wide the door, The dark night wakes, the glory breaks, And Christmas comes once more.” The stanza includes the line, “And faith holds wide the door.”
 
This hymn, like the story of the annunciation of Mary in the gospel of Luke, is a story about faith.

Acts of Kindness

Waiting for Baby Jesus!

 

We have one more Sunday during Advent as we await the Holy Birth of Jesus on Christmas Day. This period of waiting took on a new meaning for me this year, and I’d like to share it with you.

Soon after we were married in the late sixties, I went to the local ceramics shop in downtown McCormick and created what came to be our family’s nativity set (left photo above). Since that time, it became a tradition to display it in our home during the Advent Season. It wasn’t “fine china”, but it was fine to me!

 
Our garage fell victim to Hurricane Helene on September 27 and was later demolished on November 27 – the day before Thanksgiving. Among the three huge containers of ruins that went to a landfill were our Christmas decorations that were stored there – decorations that tell our family’s story.
 
Among those decorations was our Nativity set, and with the beginning of Advent, my thoughts turned to Christmas decorations, of course! A trip to the Salvation Army Thrift Store resulted in finding a 9-foot pre-lit Christmas tree! After a trip to the Dollar Tree, I suddenly had beautiful ornaments, and my tree was so beautiful! In the thrift store, I also noticed a small Hefty plastic storage bag that contained figures to a Nativity set – I counted the pieces – 10 in all. The set looked complete, so I made the purchase.
 
At home later, I discovered the Star was missing – the empty manger was there but no Baby Jesus! As you see in the photo on the right, my new Nativity is on display, and, like all of us, it is awaiting the birth of Jesus!! I don’t have to have the figurine of the main character of the Christmas Story, I already know how the story ends, and I will welcome Jesus anew in my heart on Christmas Day! The absence of Baby Jesus in my Nativity set reminds me to keep looking for Him not only during Advent but also throughout the coming year! And when I look for Him, I will find Him in the many kindnesses displayed by His people in so many ways as they share Jesus with one another! Merry Christmas!

We are praying this Christmas season is full of intent worship of our savior who came so humbly to save us all.
This season has been extra special for us, we are trying to enjoy each moment.

The Peace of Christmas That We All Need Read Philippians 4:4-7
 
Have you ever noticed that peace is an elusive quality in our world today, whether in the Middle East or in Asia, or even right here in our own community?
 
I read about an enthusiastic group of 1200 would-be peacemakers who began a “peace march” a few years back in Los Angeles. This group wanted to make a statement about the futility of war, and the importance of peace. A noble venture, wouldn’t you say?
 
Before they had gone too far, however, the peace march stalled out. About half of the group had disbanded because of petty bickering within the group. “The remaining marchers quickly polarized between those who were walkers and those who rode vehicles. Following that was a dispute over a dress code. Finally, they decided to settle some of the conflict with an election, but there was disagreement over who could vote. Eventually they came to an agreement, allowing even the children to vote, but then the election was declared invalid. The ‘peace march’ ended with a large percentage of those assembled refusing to speak to one another.” (1)
 
Jim Bruton in an article on the web describing this event commented like this: “And we wonder why nations cannot get along.”
 
In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, we find one of the most popular benedictions in the church. Verse 7 of chapter 4 reads: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
 
What an important verse for this season of the year! Advent and Christmas are times when our hearts and minds naturally move toward the hope of peace on earth.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Kindness is the Link That Keeps us Connected!

As we send Christmas wishes to family and friends via emails, texts, and other means of social media instead of sending traditional cards, the mailman’s job probably gets a little lighter. Regardless of how we do it, the most important thing here is that we spread Christmas Joy with those we care about, and technology also allows us to do this throughout the year by sending inspirational messages and scriptures that spread the Love of Jesus. How wonderful that is! I must admit, though, that I enjoy receiving and reading cards and I also have difficulty discarding them. This poem was on the cover of a Christmas card I received years ago – I have held onto it because I love the way it describes the importance of our relationships with each other.
 
My Christmas Card List

I have a list of folks I know, All written in a book,
And every year when Christmas comes, I go and take a look.
That is when I realize these names are all a part,
Not of the book they’re written in, But of my very heart.
For each name stands for someone who has crossed my path sometime,
And in that meeting they’ve become the rhythm in each rhyme.
While it may sound fantastic for me to make this claim,
I feel that I’m composed of each remembered name.
And while you may not be aware of any special link,
Just meeting you has changed my life much more than you may think.

This week’s Kindness Entries:
While eating with my brother at Cracker Barrel, the front desk hostess came over to our table and told us that our meal had been paid for – what a nice surprise – the spirit of Christmas giving is alive and well! Just in case this generous gesture did not include a tip for our waitress, we gave her a tip and thanked her for her good service!
 
Checking out at a store last week, I realized I didn’t have my wallet with me. I turned around to tell the person behind me that I needed to run quickly to my car – to my surprise, and thankfully so, it was one of my friends from MMC who was so kind to wait patiently while I did that!

CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE
SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS

Thanks to Janice Tipton and the Evangelism Committee for a wonderful open house on Saturday, December 7! There were many children and adults providing heavenly sounds in both the Fellowship Hall and the Sanctuary.
 
It was very special to have choirs from many local churches perform at the same place for those of all ages to enjoy! Of course, Santa and the cookies helped to make it even enjoyable!
 
 

PRAYER QUILTS

The Prayers and Squares team made two more beautiful quilts to be blessed by the church family and delivered to those needing comfort and prayers.The quilts on Sunday were for Patsy Rhinehart (in picture) and Pat Meyers. We pray both will find comfort, knowing many prayers were said while tying the knots.
 
 
The Prayers and Squares team works in the room between the office and Nel’s office. The ladies are often there working, but if you would like to have a quilt made for someone in pain, there are forms on the door if they don’t happen to be there!
 

ELDER BASKETS DELIVERED

Many thanks to Lorna Hill and her brother, Randy, for delivering the Elder Baskets. There was a lot of food and supplies thanks to the MMC family!
 

The baskets were delivered to the Committee on Native American Ministries to be distributed at Christmas to families in need.

MATTHEW AND KRISTI SCALES

MISSION IN UGANDA

 
On Sunday, November 24, Matthew and Kristi Scales shared their plans as they answer God’s call to mission in Uganda. They asked for the church family’s prayers and said they would appreciate any financial backing we could give them as they moved forward on this mission. They gave us a QR code where we can get regular updates via email. We can write to them also! They’d love to get to know our church family and answer any questions.
 
 
God led them to Mesa Global. This organization, based in Charlotte, NC is a 501c3 with over 400 missionaries globally. They exist to “bring all to the table,” by serving with the global church to equip local believers in ministry. This is accomplished by helping to plant churches, do evangelism, assist ministries in mercy and justice, so that local leaders are holistically formed to carry the gospel further.
 
During their talks with Mesa Global, it became clear that their ministry focus would be around agriculture simply because their entire family can do it. They have three children, who will also be going to Uganda. Kristi has dedicated her life to medicine but that could only be her ministry, farming they can all do. As they saw God’s lead toward agriculture as a mission, a small town in Uganda was brought up. In Bugiri, Uganda (around 6 hours drive from the capital) there is a ministry center called New Life Skills Ministry Center (https://hope58.org/). This center exists to transform lives and communities through equipping village pastors with vital biblical training, giving vulnerable village girls Christ centered life skills, and helping little ones get an excellent start to their educational journey in preschool.
 
On the property is a farm that has been neglected due to all the work needed from the missionaries already there (https://www.facebook.com/actis.mission). Their vision is for this farm to grow, not only in production of crops, but into a skills teaching center for the students and local community. They call this Farming God’s way. Just think about it, how much about farming points directly to the Gospel (the seed, the soil, the HARVEST Matthew 9:37).
 
Their past life experiences trained them for the tasks of this ministry. For example, years of practice with beef, cattle, hay and crop production. Their local church, Oakbrook, has graciously supported this calling for their family. Of course rural living in Union for years has given them the most experience of all! What a blessing from God because of this they feel uniquely qualified and called to reach out to this community in Uganda.

Happenings – December 6, 2024

See the Star!
 
Sometimes we need to learn from the least of these how to skip the unimportant so that we can see the most important. Stephen Shadeeg is an Arizona businessman, the father of four children, who told a wonderful story of a particular Christmas morning. He said they had a rule at their house that none of the children could go down to see gifts under the tree until the rest of the family was awake and they could all go together.
 
The year David was seven, he came bounding into their bedroom at 4:30 a.m., his face glowing with excitement, his mouth running at about ninety miles an hour. “Daddy! Mother! Come quick! I saw it!”
 
As they wiped the sleep from their eyes, both he and his wife knew what had happened. The rule had been broken. David had already discovered the new bicycle that he had been wanting for two years. They felt cheated that he had rushed ahead and they had missed seeing his discovery, but it was Christmas, after all, and they couldn’t scold him for being overly anxious.
 
They climbed out of bed, pulled on their robes and slippers, and David took them by the hands, dragging them down the hall. They woke the rest of the children, and with all the family in tow, David led them down the stairs and through the darkened living room toward a window on the eastern side of the house, totally oblivious of the bicycle which sat unnoticed beside the tree. He pointed his little finger to the eastern sky and said, “Look! The Star of Bethlehem! I’ve seen the star!”
 
The child was right. Skip the bicycle. See the star!

What is Advent?
Advent is a four-week season dedicated to reflective preparation for the arrival, “advent”, of Jesus Christ’s Nativity at Christmas time as well and Christ’s expected return in the Second Coming. During this important event on the church calendar, each week of Advent focuses on a different theme – hope, peace, joy, and love. Christians from all denominations and backgrounds celebrate Advent in different ways but all focus on the anticipation of waiting for the arrival of Jesus.
 
The Chrismon Tree is also full of light; symbols of the Christian faith grace its boughs. The Chrismons on the tree point us to the character and nature of God in Christ, and to our life of faith in Christ. We pray that the keeping of Advent will make us watchful and ready for the coming of God in Christ who brings salvation to all.

Kindness Update – The Parable of the Snow Globe

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we may already be struggling to hear the tender voice of our Heavenly Father. Judi Bouchard would remind us that all we need to do is remember the lesson of the snow globe that follows: Thanks so much for sharing, Judi!
 
It was Christmas Eve, and eight-year-old Joey was opening presents with his family at Grandma Baker’s house.
 
Several presents were remaining, but Joey’s attention was distracted by the snow globe on Grandma’s credenza. Over and over, he shook the globe, watching in awe as the snow hid the cottage scene from view. It was as if he could make the cottage disappear!
 
“Joey, you have more presents to open,” his dad reminded him. But Joey persisted. The snow globe had captured his attention, and he couldn’t imagine any presents being as fun. Finally, Grandma Baker went over to Joey and tried a new tactic. “Joey, I love that snow globe too. Can I tell you why?” “Sure, Grandma,” he replied, still gazing at the globe.
 
“Joey, I’ve lived a long time, and I’ve found that life is often just like this snow globe. Sometimes we get all shaken up inside, and we can’t even see the things that are right in front of us.” “What do you mean, Grandma?” he asked quizzically. “How could we get shaken up like that?”
 
“Well, you’ll understand a lot more about that as you get older, Joey. Sometimes things just don’t go our way. Or maybe someone is mean to us. Or perhaps we’re feeling sick. When things like that happen, our heart can become shaken up like the snow globe.”
 
“What’s so bad about that, Grandma? I think the snow is pretty.” “Yes, it’s pretty, but it hides the beautiful scenery, Joey. When that happens in our heart, we can’t see the Lord or His plan for us very well, and sometimes we don’t even know where we are!”
 
“That sounds pretty bad. What can we do when our heart gets that way? How can we see the picture again?” Grandma Baker smiled and picked up an old Bible from the coffee table. “There’s a Scripture passage that describes this, Joey.”
 
“The Bible talks about snow globes?” “No, not snow globes, but about what happens when our hearts get cloudy like that.” Flipping through the well-worn pages, she continued, “Psalm 46:10 tells us, ‘Be still, and know that I am God.’ When we quit what we’re doing and quiet our heart in God’s presence, the cloudy circumstances sink to the ground and let us see the beautiful picture again.”

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come!”
Brightly wrapped packages, Christmas trees, holiday parties, holly and the scent of pine, unending upbeat carols in shops and malls, visits from friends and family, baking and cooking, food everywhere–and the awesome, hushed joy of welcoming a tiny Infant to our world and our hearts–these are the images and memories of Christmas most of us celebrate and treasure.
 
But these joys are not felt by everyone. Each year there are people … the grieving, the ailing, the struggling, and the lonely … who dread the holiday season. They are not moved by the carols, not made hungry by the smells of things baking in the oven or a turkey in a roaster, not excited about the shopping, don’t want to decorate their Christmas tree. Instead, they are overwhelmed by feelings of despair … they dread the hustle and bustle, the anticipation, and the excitement.
 
Some of these people in our church and community have a Stephen Minister to help them cope, but many do not … and appear to be doing just fine, but are struggling. If you know of someone having a difficult holiday season, reach out to them.
 
And remember … If it’s you experiencing a difficult holiday season and you need someone to listen to you, with whom you can share your feelings and receive acceptance and Christian love, please consider being in a relationship with a Stephen Minister at MMC.

MESSAGE FROM EMILEE GROH

Dear Beloved Church Family: I am SO thankful to our awesome God who sustains and strengthens me daily. And to all of you , my church family, for all the prayers, calls, food, cards that you have showered on me these past 3 months; the errands run on my behalf . Willing drivers who have taken me to the doctor appointments and those who have come to me so I can be included while I have been sidelined at home. I am So blessed by all of you and praise God for such a caring “family”.
 
I also am thankful that I am able to see you thru Livestream, sing lustfully, praise, pray, be uplifted and rejoice with you each Sunday. Although I would much rather be there in person and look forward to that time when I can return to worship and Young at Heart SS class regularly, I count this a blessing.. I did not know this journey would take so long for relief nor know how much longer it will be, but I do know how much of a blessing you are to me.

MATTHEW AND KRISTI SCALES

MISSION IN UGANDA

 
On Sunday, November 24, Matthew and Kristi Scales shared their plans as they answer God’s call to mission in Uganda. They asked for the church family’s prayers and said they would appreciate any financial backing we could give them as they moved forward on this mission. They gave us a QR code where we can get regular updates via email. We can write to them also! They’d love to get to know our church family and answer any questions.
 
 
God led them to Mesa Global. This organization, based in Charlotte, NC is a 501c3 with over 400 missionaries globally. They exist to “bring all to the table,” by serving with the global church to equip local believers in ministry. This is accomplished by helping to plant churches, do evangelism, assist ministries in mercy and justice, so that local leaders are holistically formed to carry the gospel further.
 
During their talks with Mesa Global, it became clear that their ministry focus would be around agriculture simply because their entire family can do it. They have three children, who will also be going to Uganda. Kristi has dedicated her life to medicine but that could only be her ministry, farming they can all do. As they saw God’s lead toward agriculture as a mission, a small town in Uganda was brought up. In Bugiri, Uganda (around 6 hours drive from the capital) there is a ministry center called New Life Skills Ministry Center (https://hope58.org/). This center exists to transform lives and communities through equipping village pastors with vital biblical training, giving vulnerable village girls Christ centered life skills, and helping little ones get an excellent start to their educational journey in preschool.
 
On the property is a farm that has been neglected due to all the work needed from the missionaries already there (https://www.facebook.com/actis.mission). Their vision is for this farm to grow, not only in production of crops, but into a skills teaching center for the students and local community. They call this Farming God’s way. Just think about it, how much about farming points directly to the Gospel (the seed, the soil, the HARVEST Matthew 9:37).
 
Their past life experiences trained them for the tasks of this ministry. For example, years of practice with beef, cattle, hay and crop production. Their local church, Oakbrook, has graciously supported this calling for their family. Of course rural living in Union for years has given them the most experience of all! What a blessing from God because of this they feel uniquely qualified and called to reach out to this community in Uganda.
