The Ivy Lee Method
Ivy Lee (1877–1934) was an American publicity expert and worked as a consultant for a number of businesses. One of those was for Charles Schwab, who was then president of Bethlehem Steel. Schwab was obsessed with efficiency and wanted Bethlehem Steel to become more productive. Ivy Lee was brought in.
Schwab asked: “Show me a way to get more things done.”
Lee: “Give me 15 minutes with each of your executives”
Schwab: “How much will it cost me?”
Schwab: “How much will it cost me?”
Lee: “Nothing. Unless it works. After three months, you can send me a check for whatever you feel it’s worth to you.”
Schwab agreed and during those 15 minutes with each executive, Lee laid out the following five step method:
- At the end of each working day, write down the five most important things you need to accomplish tomorrow. Do not write down more than five tasks.
- Prioritize those items in order of their true importance.
- When you arrive tomorrow, concentrate only on the first task. Work until the first task is finished before moving on to the second task.
- Approach the rest of your list in the same way. Don’t worry if you’ve only finished one or two by the end of the day; the others can wait.
- Repeat this process every working day.
It’s simple right? Well, Schwab and his team starting using this method. It worked well, very well. After a couple months of outstanding production from his staff Schwab sent a $25,000 check to Lee. Adjusted for inflation that’s $400,000 today!
Today this simple approach is called the The Ivy Lee Method. It’s a million dollar productivity approach for a lot of companies. If we were to apply the Ivy Lee Method to our Christianity what would it look like? I think all of us would agree that Love God and Love your neighbor would be on the list as would the Great Commission. What would come after that?
Each of us has a calling and purpose to serve Christ and His Church. I urge you to prayerfully make your list of priorities and give the Ivy Lee Method and God a try.
Trust in God; pursue what is Good, and don’t worry about tomorrow. You will be surprised at how much you can accomplish for the Lord. And….the beauty of this is your needs will be met because you are abiding in the Spirit of the Lord.

See you and your priorities in Church or online this Sunday!

Acts of Kindness
Kindness – Is A Praying Church!

Several Sundays ago, during Morning Worship, I requested prayer from our Church Family for my younger brother Bailey that he might find an apartment in Greenwood. Because he lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC, I had been searching for housing for him for a month. With a move out date by August 8 in his present residence, we were running against a pretty tight schedule!
With all of your prayers, it turns out that was a deadline that God could meet (of course!)! My search led me to an apartment complex called Winter Ridge located at 102 Winter Way in Greenwood. When I drove up to the office and saw the sign above, “Be Kind”, I had the strongest feeling that our prayers were going to be answered! After spending about an hour with Kimberly (left) and Ashlee (right), I learned that Bailey might be able to be in his new home between August 11 and the 18th! Thank you, Jesus!
On Bailey’s behalf and mine, too, I hope all of you know how much I appreciate your caring and concern. It certainly means a lot to me to know I am among such kind, strong prayer warriors! And, as a special bonus, I met two wonderful new friends – Kimberly and Ashlee! Their team is amazing and they deserve all the kindness and patience their customers can give them!
There have been many beautiful visions of kindness that resulted from our Covid pandemic, and this week’s kindness entry features a good example: While talking with a friend recently about how our daughters are frequent shoppers online through Amazon these days, yet another by-product of the pandemic, she shared a beautiful act of kindness that her daughter does. Realizing how busy these delivery drivers are and have been for several years now, her daughter has chilled bottles of water and snacks at the point of delivery outside her home so the drivers can help themselves and be refreshed! I think I’ll pass this thought on to my daughter!
Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!
1) Be a blessing to others by sharing your Act of Kindness (no names please) on our website, or use this link! Then check back each week to learn how others are passing on acts of kindness! The link is https://www.mccormickmc.org/acts-of-kindness
2) There is a Kindness box in the library on the window sill, along with paper and pencil. Share your God-Wink, perhaps someone else will be inspired!

WHAT IS ALPHA?

Alpha is an 11 week course designed to create a space for honest conversation around some of life’s biggest questions. It is designed to provide guests, churched and unchurched, an opportunity to connect with one another while providing the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, and opinions in a safe and caring environment. Alpha helps bring people together while providing the chance to encounter Jesus.
Each week consists of a meal together, viewing a video taped talk and then breaking into small discussion groups. You will hear more about the program in the weeks to come. Please start to think and pray for those you would like to invite who may not yet know Jesus. Both Rich and Kim Jackson attended the Alpha Course in 2010, feel free to ask them any questions you may have.
The Alpha Course will be offered to our church and community beginning September 10, 2023 at 5:30 pm.
Sign up sheets will be in Fellowship Hall.

FABULOUS FUN SISTERS IN FAITH RETREAT
AUGUST 4 AND AUGUST 5
HICKORY KNOB
Fabulous Fun Sisters in Faith Retreat—1st EVER/Education Committee & Maxine Dunn
Our retreat foundation is based on Mark 6:31 “Let us go off by ourselves to some place where we will be alone, and you can rest a while”. Well, ok Hickory Knob isn’t in the wilderness, it’s just across the street, but how many of us take the time to relax and just enjoy ourselves with our Christian sisters? Thinking it would be fun to re-group and get to know one another…let the fun begin!!
The retreat (details forthcoming in another BLAST) will be Friday night August 4th and Saturday August 5th. The rooms are for one night only and are double occupancy, so grab a roomy or just sign up and be surprised!
What you need to do now is check your calendar, if you’re available write a commitment check to McCormick Methodist Church for $25 and put EDUCATION COMMITTEE on it. This is holding your half of a room, the park is crowded in the summer and if we don’t fill the rooms we’ll need to give them back.
Activities will be Friday night and Saturday morning through lunch. Details will be worked out as we find out how many women will be involved.
Those women who would like to join us for Saturday morning activities only please call one of us and let us know you’re interested so we can plan. All are welcome and you can be a part of the program, or a participant! Let the Holy Spirit direct you!!!
Questions? Please call Maxine Dunn, or Kim Jackson or Wendy Kvale.
