The Spirit Has Landed

As I was preparing for this Sunday, I found this wonderful article by Rev. Brett Blair. I share it with you to help prepare you for this Sunday’s worship service.

Back on January 3rd 2010, the Mars rover named “Spirit” began its sixth year of diligent exploration (Spirit landed on January 3, 2004). It had been sending back so many photographs that NASA figured out a way to teach the little rover how to detect changes in images, so that it sends only images back to Earth with new information. For example, if Rover was taking photographs of dust devils, it now pauses and waits until the image changes before taking the next photo. This meant less work for the scientists sifting through the many, many amazing photographs ‘Spirit’ sent home. What a great name for such a small machine. It made great discovery. We need that kind of spirit in our world.

I don’t know if you saw pictures of the rover back then; it’s about the size of a small coffee table. A lot of NASA’s hopes were riding on this little robot. And it delivered, beyond everyone’s expectations. There’s something to be said about the big influence of small things.

It reminds me of the Scottish minister who told his congregation about dreaming he had died. When he came to the pearly gates, to his dismay, he would be denied entrance until he presented his credentials. Proudly the Pastor articulated the number of sermons preached and the prominent pulpits occupied. But Saint Peter said no one had heard them in heaven. The discouraged servant enumerated his community involvement. He was told they were not recorded. Sorrowfully, the pastor turned to leave, when Peter said, “Stay a moment, and tell me, are you the man who fed the sparrows?”

“Yes,” the Scotsman replied, “but what does that have to do with it?”

“Come in,” said Saint Peter, “the Master of the sparrows wants to thank you.”

Here is the pertinent, though often overlooked, point: great and prominent positions indicate skill and capacity, but small services suggest the depth of one’s consecration. We overlook the big influence of small things.

And so it is with Jesus’ Baptism. It’s a small thing for Jesus to do. It was not necessary for him to be baptized since there was no sin in his life for which to repent. But he submits to John’s Baptism of Repentance anyway. Why? To identify with our sins. He joined in the popular movement of his day. It was a grass roots movement started by a desert monk named John the Baptist. John was calling for the repentance of Israel. Jesus chooses to be baptized because he wants to participate with the people in their desires to be close to God.

It’s a small thing Jesus does but what a big influence. It forever marks baptism as the way we Christians publicly declare our repentance and dependence on God’s grace.

So the Spirit descends from the heavens, lands on Jesus and sends the following vivid snapshots:

1. In the backdrop all the people are baptized.

2. In the forefront Jesus stands out as the focus of God’s love.

3. Baptism is the framework by which ministry begins

And I will add to Brett’s article. As the Spirit landed on Christ, it also landed on us and continues to lead us into a new way of living. We will explore this on Sunday.

See you in Church or online this First Sunday of the New Year!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Happy New Year!

During Christmas, I hope we all have had our hearts filled with enough Love from Jesus to carry us into 2024 and beyond! It may be part of the aging process, but I find myself not giving much thought these days to making New Year resolutions, but rather, spending time looking back at the blessings of 2023 and praying for the Holy Spirit’s direction for this year that I might have, in the words of Charles Dickens, “a new heart for a New Year, always!”

Many years ago, my boss – a great Christian lady and friend – gave me a plaque with the following inscription: “If you planted hope today in any hopeless heart, If someone’s burden was lighter because you did your part, If you caused a laugh that chased a tear away, If tonight your name is mentioned when someone kneels to pray, Then your day was well spent.” I have kept it at eye level in my kitchen since that time and learned that these kind words to live by came from a Christian blog site, Katherines Corner by Reverend Katherine.

In closing, I’d like to share with you a kindness treasure I saw on television during the holidays. It is a 60 second TV commercial from The Foundation for a Better Life, and it certainly defines kindness in the simplest terms and reminds us that it begins with each of us. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and may Kindness be our word for 2024! Click below and enjoy!

Kindness Entry: At the checkout counter a few days after Christmas, I was surprised at the response of the young female clerk – just a teenager – when I asked if she had a good Christmas. Her reply was “No, I didn’t”. This caught me by surprise, and I said, “I’m sorry”, to which her response was, “You don’t have to be sorry – it wasn’t your fault!” I do not know anything about the circumstances of this young lady, but this experience served as a reminder to me of the great need we have for kindness in our world – a simple silent prayer when we encounter situations like this could make a big difference to someone who is hurting!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

1) Be a blessing to others by sharing your Act of Kindness (no names please) on our website, or use this link! Then check back each week to learn how others are passing on acts of kindness! The link is https://www.mccormickmc.org/acts-of-kindness

2) There is a Kindness box in the library on the window sill, along with paper and pencil. Share your God-Wink, perhaps someone else will be inspired!

Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Here we are on the last few weeks of 2023. What a year we have had! For now we pause and reflect on the coming of Christ at Christmas. I am sharing with you below three stories from one of our favorite writers, Rev. James W Moore. Each in it’s own way will give you a message and inspiration as you have you Christmas devotions.

Christ In The Form Of Communion
It was a cold Christmas Eve a few years ago. Will Willimon, Dean of the Chapel at Duke University, was rushing his family to get in the car. They were running late for the communion service. “Where are the sermon notes? Where is the pulpit robe? Don’t forget to turn off the lights. Everybody get in the car and be quiet!”

On the way to the church… rushing through the traffic, their 5-year-old- daughter, Harriet, got sick at her stomach and she up-chucked all over the car. “Great!” Will Willimon thought, “If people only knew what preachers go through.” He wheeled into the church parking lot and jumped out of the car, leaving his wife, Patsy, to clean up the car and get the kids into the church… and he thought, “If people only knew what preachers’ spouses go through.”

His wife, Patsy, led a still unsteady and pale Harriet into the church. They sat on the back pew in the darkness… just in case Harriet got sick again. Their son, William, age seven, ran down to the front of the church to sit with his grandparents. Will Willimon threw on his robe, took a deep breath, and joined the choir for the processional. He made it through the first part of the service… and the sermon. Then came Holy Communion. Will Willimon’s wife, Patsy, came down to the altar to receive the sacrament, but she left 5 year old Harriet on the back pew. Harriet was still so pale and so weak and so sick. But then something beautiful happened. Seven-year-old William got up and came back to the communion rail. “What on earth is he doing?” wondered his parents. “He’s already received communion once. What is he up to?” They watched him race to the back of the church and scoot down the pew toward his sister. He opened his hands… revealing a small piece of bread. “Harriet,” he said, “This is the body of Christ given for you.” Without hesitation, little Harriet picked the bread out of her brother’s hands and plopped it into her mouth and said, “Amen.” And in that moment Holy Communion had never been more holy. Then 7-year-old William patted his 5-year-old sister Harriet on the head. He smiled. She smiled. And then he turned and ran back down to the front of the church to re-join his grandparents. (The Christian Ministry, July-August 1989, p. 47)

Think of that. Her 7-year-old brother William thought to include her. Either because she wasn’t being included or he thought it might help her feel better he reached out to his sister with what really mattered—the body of Christ in the form of communion. There’s a name for that… it’s called LOVE! What a beautiful thing it is when our children rise to the occasion and teach us once again the power of love, the wonder of love, the miracle of love.

Rich Is What You Have Beside You
Back during World War II, four young American soldiers who had been on the front lines of battle for some time, were sent back away from the fighting to a small French village for a little R & R. When they arrived safely in the village, they suddenly realized that it was Christmas Eve. They began to discuss how they would like to spend Christmas. One of the soldiers said, “You know, as we were coming into town earlier today, I noticed an orphanage on the outskirts of the village. Why don’t we go there in the morning and take some Christmas joy to those children?” The others liked the idea and the more they talked about it, the more excited they became. So they went out and bought all kinds of toys and candy and clothing, food and books and games, and early the next morning, they showed up at the front door of the orphanage with wonderful Christmas presents for all the children.

The orphanage director was pleased and all the children were delighted as they opened their gifts. All the children that is, except for one little girl who stood quietly off to the side. She appeared to be 5 or 6 years old and her face looked so very sad. One of the American soldiers noticed that she was not participating, and he asked the orphanage director about the little girl. “O, bless her heart,” said the director, “We just got her last week. Both of her parents were killed in a car wreck. There was no one to take her in, so we brought her here.”

The soldier went over to the little girl and gently he said to her, “It is Christmas morning and we have wonderful Christmas presents here: toys, clothes, candy, food, books, puzzles. Which would you like? What do you want most for Christmas?” And the little girl said, “I want somebody to hold me.”

Maybe that is the best Christmas gift of all… someone to hold us. As somebody once put it, “Rich is not what you have. It’s who you have beside you.” Well, this sacred season comes along once each year to remind us that “Love Came Down at Christmas,” that God is even now reaching out to us with open arms, and that He wants us to accept His love and to pass it on to others.

A Grown Up Christmas
Years ago, I was in a department store doing some Christmas shopping. Christmas music was playing and I was getting into the spirit of it all… when suddenly I realized that I was singing along with Natalie Cole. Natalie and I were singing her new Christmas song at the time. It was a big hit, called “My Grown-up Christmas List.” Did you ever hear it? In the song, Natalie Cole reminisces about how when she was young, she sat on Santa’s knee and told him about her childhood fantasies. And then she sings about how she’s all grown up now, but she still has dreams…things she would like for Christmas, not just for herself but for our needy world. Then she sings her “Grown-up Christmas List.” Here are the things she wants for Christmas now:

No more lives torn apart
And wars will never start,
And time will heal all hearts.

Everyone will have a friend
And right will always win,
And love will never end.

This is my lifelong dream,
My Grown-up Christmas List.

Do you know what Natalie Cole is longing for in that song? She is longing for the peace of Christmas… and the place to find that is in the miracle of Bethlehem. When we go back to Bethlehem, we discover that real peace means being set right in all our relationships. It means being… right with God, right with ourselves, and right with other people.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Happy Birthday, Jesus!

The Secret Sisters Dinner last Tuesday was the celebration of a project that is a good example of planting and cultivating acts of kindness throughout the year. It was exciting and fun to have the identity of the person who had showered you with kindness throughout the year revealed and to be able to express your feelings of gratitude to your “Secret Sister”. Now, the process will begin again in 2024! Kudos to all who made this fun activity a reality!

For dessert, there was a huge Birthday Cake for Jesus with lit candles. When the guest singer was asked to lead the group in singing “Happy Birthday, Jesus”, instead of singing the traditional song, he sang the most beautiful version I have ever heard. Because I loved it so, and because I think you will love it, too, I wanted to share it with you. Even if you were at the dinner and heard the song, please take a minute and click the link below – if you do, I think you will get a beautiful surprise!

May we all give Jesus the gift he really wants this Christmas – let’s give Him our hearts! Merry Christmas to all!

Thank you to Barb Jeffers, Sandy Bonam and Kim Jackson for coordinating!

It’s time to sign up again and we’re hoping all women will join us! The only requisites for Secret Sisters are the giving of birthday and Christmas gifts to your randomly selected sister. Of course, you’re welcome to give gifts at any other time of the year if you feel inclined to do so.

Sign up today… All you need to do is email Kim Jackson, tell her you want to participate in 2024. She will send you a link to ELFSTER, which asks you for your birth month and day. (No, not the year!!!). Such fun!

If you have any questions feel free to ask Kim Jackson.

Letting God Bless You

In his book, Letting God Bless You, John Killinger concludes with the challenge:

Permit God to bless you. Don’t look around you and think how hard life is. Look around and see how filled with mystery and goodness it is. See how wonderful the world looks when you know God is at work redeeming it and setting up the anti-structures, so that humility and purity and compassion and longing for justice and peace will all be fulfilled and rewarded in the eternal scheme of things.

Give thanks to God for the richness of existence. Then look around to see who you can share it with. That will make you even richer.

If you will learn to live this way every day, you will always have a song in your heart and the path before you will be lined with flowers. Joy will spring up inside you like a fountain, and you will lie down to sleep at night with peace in your soul. And you will say, “Blessed be the name of our God forever and ever, who calls us to a new rule where righteousness will be the order of the day forever!”

After reading this book by Killinger, another author John Cline proclaimed. This Advent season, my friends, let us make the critical choice of permitting God to bless us and to fill us with a new sense of hope and purposeful living. Let us live in the assurance that the present darkness is not our final destination, that there is indeed much more yet to come. Along the way we will begin to experience joy springing up within us like a fountain. Thanks be to God, who blesses us with love and grace beyond measure.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – The Twelve Days of Christmas!

We are all familiar with singing The Twelve Days of Christmas – it’s usually pretty easy to remember the words until you get past “five golden rings” – then we become confused matching the higher numbers and descriptions! Our kindness entry this week comes from my cousin who sent me an email the other day about the religious meaning behind this song. I went online to check it out and found the following that is reprinted from the God Updates website. It was news to me, and I thought it might be to you as well!

The song, The Twelve Days of Christmas, is an old English Christmas carol. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England weren’t allowed to openly practice their faith. So someone wrote this carol during that era so they could sing publicly to the Lord without non-believers knowing.

The song on the surface held one meaning to those who heard it. But for members of the Church, there was a much deeper, hidden meaning known only to them. Each number in the carol stands for a different item of spiritual significance!

The “True Love” one hears in the song is not a smitten boy or girlfriend but rather, it’s Jesus Christ, because Love was truly born on Christmas Day. The partridge in the pear tree also represents Jesus, because partridges are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect its young by faking an injury to draw predators away.

Here’s a rundown of the rest of the numbers in the Twelve Days of Christmas:
  • 2 turtle doves – the Old and New Testaments
  • 3 French hens – faith, hope and love
  • 4 calling birds are the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John
  • 5 golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of …the Old Testament
  • 6 geese a-laying – six days of creation
  • 7 swans a-swimming – sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit–Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy
  • 8 maids a-milking – the eight beatitudes
  • 9 ladies dancing are the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit–Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control
  • 10 lords a-leaping are the ten commandments
  •  11 pipers piping stand for the eleven faithful disciples
  • 12 twelve drummers drumming symbolizes the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed.
So, it seems especially appropriate at Christmas – on Jesus’ birthday – to think of Him as our “True Love” – the world would be a much better place if we live every day like we believe this in our hearts!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

Rock Turning

Several years ago I heard a story that galvanized me. It’s a story of some Catholic nuns in Cleveland, Ohio. I don’t know the name of their Order, but they have committed their lives to working in the Catholic schools in Cleveland’s inner city. Day after day after day, they focus their faith and energy on the education of inner-city youngsters, youngsters whose lives are at risk in so many areas.

One day, out of nowhere, a wonderful gift was given to these nuns. The gift was to pay for the entire Order to go on a vacation. Vans were supplied, and all the necessary money for their trip was contributed anonymously. So, that summer, the nuns closed their Order house and headed to the vacation spot of their choice, the Rocky Mountains.

Most of them had never seen the Rockies, except in their imaginations. They were awed by the glory of the mountains. They would stop and ponder and behold and not be able to take their eyes off the majesty they were experiencing. They noticed, however, that every time they stopped, Sister Margaret, one of the smallest members of their Order, would move to the edge of the group, and then disappear for a while. She’d return sometime later. They didn’t know what she was doing.

So on one particular occasion when they had stopped to behold a majestic view, they decided they would follow her. She stole away from the group and made her way down into a gully. They watched her as she walked into the gully. She bent down and reached under a sizable rock, and then turned the rock upside down. She brushed her hands and turned around to walk back up the trail. When she looked up, the entire Order of nuns was watching her. “Margaret, what are you doing?” they asked. “I’m turning over a rock.” she replied. “Why?” they asked. “Do you do that every time?” She answered, “Yes.” “Why do you do that?” And she replied: “Because I will never pass this way again, and it’s my intent to have made a difference while I was here. So I turn some rocks over so that this place is different because I passed here.”

What rocks does a church like McCormick Methodist have to turn over in the city of McCormick for the good of the common society? What rocks do we need to turn over inside of us in order for the Kingdom of God to make its way through all of the barriers that we put up? I think there needs to be some rock-turning going on inside of each of us in order that we can, with the help of a truth-teller like John the Baptizer, maybe taste and smell the real experience of Jesus’ birth – in the interior manger of our lives.

See you in Church or online this Second Sunday of Advent!

STEPHEN MINISTRY

FIRST TUESDAY CORNER

“Joy to the world, the Lord is come!”
Brightly wrapped packages, Christmas trees, holiday parties, holly and the scent of pine, unending upbeat carols in shops and malls, visits from friends and family, baking and cooking, food everywhere–and the awesome, hushed joy of welcoming a tiny Infant to our world and our hearts–these are the images and memories of Christmas most of us celebrate and treasure.

But these joys are not felt by everyone. Each year there are people … the grieving, the ailing, the struggling, and the lonely … who dread the holiday season. They are not moved by the carols, not made hungry by the smells of things baking in the oven or a turkey in a roaster, not excited about the shopping, don’t want to decorate their Christmas tree. Instead, they are overwhelmed by feelings of despair … they dread the hustle and bustle, the anticipation, and the excitement.

Some of these people in our church and community have a Stephen Minister to help them cope, but many do not … and appear to be doing just fine, but are struggling. If you know of someone having a difficult holiday season, reach out to them.

And remember … If it’s you experiencing a difficult holiday season and you need someone to listen to you, with whom you can share your feelings and receive acceptance and Christian love, please consider being in a relationship with a Stephen Minister at MMC.

Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders and begin a ‘fellowship’ with a Stephen Minister. We may be reached through the church office at (864)852-2394.

ELDER BASKET CAMPAIGN 2023

What an amazing campaign!!

We are so very thankful for all the wonderful items and monetary donations that came in! The people in this church and beyond are incredibly generous and we are very grateful!! It was especially touching to see donations come in from our Girl Scout Troop 6318 as well. It put a smile on all our faces!

You did it!! This was our biggest year since we started this campaign in 2018. More items were donated and the monetary donations surpassed all previous years!! Awesome!!! Praise be to God!!

We filled “24” baskets with overflowing items, along with extra paper towels, toilet paper, 24 larger bottles of detergent, and extra items. Cash donations of $1,470.00 allowed us to enhance the baskets and purchase missing items. We will, also, send a check of $400.00 to Cathy Nelson (Director of Keeper of the Word) to create more baskets for Elders in need.

Many thanks to Polly Prather, Maxine Dunn, Patty Kriger and Janet Smith for all your help in sorting, organizing, and buying the rest of the items needed to finish filling the baskets!

Also, many thanks for the help of Don Smith, John Horner, Marc Heyman, Bernie Tarrant and Wendy Kvale in loading the “24” baskets so we could deliver them to the home of Lee Anne Lamar in Camden, SC.

We were met by Lee Anne, her husband Rick, and Mark Two Blades Williams, Vice Chief and Keeper of the Flame of the PAIA Lower Eastern Cherokee in Lauren’s County. Mark took 12 of our baskets with him back to Lauren’s County. He thanked us profusely!!
Lee Anne and her husband delivered our other 12 baskets to the Catawba Tribe in Rock Hill, SC.

Lee Anne remarked about our baskets and not just the quantity, but the quality of the items we provided. These are her words: “Thank you for your consistent dedication in sharing so generously with the Native Americans in our area of SC! May all the blessing be multiplied! All praises, honor, and glory to our Creator, Savior and Holy Spirit! A’Ho & Amen”

Thank you everyone and God Bless you all!!

Kindness Update – The Greatest Gift That Keeps On Giving!

1 John 3:17 “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

In the midst of the mad Christmas shopping rush for gifts, it’s good to read stories about reaching out to those who are experiencing very difficult times right now, especially when they are done in a big way. Such is the following story that is reprinted from a November 26 release in the Good News Network:

It’s been a difficult year for Hawaiians in Maui since wildfires destroyed the community in August, but with the holidays approaching so is the kindness, with Walmart and the Salvation Army stepping up with tens of thousands of free toys and gifts.

The organizations wanted to give back to the children affected in the community with a holiday celebration and surprise toy giveaway. Walmart donated 35,000 toys to the children brightening their holiday spirits through two events.

They held a Christmas party for two elementary schools: Not only did the 800 children receive thousands of toys, Walmart showed the staff appreciation with Walmart gift cards to use during the holidays. In a second event, a Winter Wonderland Toy Shopping Spree was held at a local Walmart store where more than 1,800 Maui children and their families were able to shop for multiple toys, free of charge.

“Held exactly three months after the devastating wildfires, this heartwarming event aimed to bring joy to the families impacted by the Lahaina wildfires,” said a Walmart spokesperson. “The smiles and excitement on their faces were a testament to the love and care shared by the Lahaina community, Walmart and The Salvation Army.”

These large organizations are to be commended for carrying out God’s tradition of gift-giving at Christmas, and not only are the recipients blessed by their kindness but so also are we blessed by their example to us.

This Week’s Kindness Entry: I misplaced my cellphone while shopping last week and traced my steps back to the counter where I made my purchase with no luck. I traced my steps back to the bathroom and checked with a lady coming out with no luck, but she offered to help my search by walking all over the store and dialing my number continuously, which she did. While waiting in line to check with the store clerk at the customer service counter, I heard a cellphone ring. When the clerk opened the drawer, there it was! When I got outside, I called the helpful stranger whose number appeared on my caller ID – we had a nice conversation, and I had the chance to let her know how very much I appreciated her help!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

DECEMBER 12 5:30

Ladies of McCormick Methodist Church, mark your calendars for a delightful evening of revelation and celebration! On December 12th at 5:30, we’ll gather for our long-awaited Secret Sister Christmas Party.

This heartwarming event is the grand reveal, where each participant will finally discover who their Secret Sister has been all year. Since last December, each one of us selected a random name and anonymously shared surprises, thoughtful birthday gifts, and tokens of love for various special occasions.

This initiative, the first of its kind at McCormick Methodist Church, has been a beautiful journey. It’s our hope to make this an annual tradition, creating lasting bonds and spreading joy within our community.

The evening promises to be filled with joy and fellowship as we enjoy a delightful dinner and scrumptious desserts. It’s an opportunity to share in the Christmas spirit, as we unite to reveal our Secret Sisters and present them with a special Christmas gift.

Let’s come together to celebrate the spirit of giving and sisterhood on this special evening. If you are a Secret Sister please RSVP by signing up in Fellowship Hall.

Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

‘Twas the beginning of Advent

This Week I would like to share with you a poem that is based on a rather famous poem about Christmas called ‘Twas the Beginning of Advent’. It is by Todd Jenkins. It will tell you a little bit about this season we celebrate.

‘Twas the beginning of Advent and all through the Church
Our hope was all dying we’d given up on the search.
It wasn’t so much that Christ wasn’t invited,
But after 2,000 plus years we were no longer excited.

Oh, we knew what was coming no doubt about that.
And that was the trouble it was all “old hat.”
November brought the first of an unending series of pains
With carefully orchestrated advertising campaigns.

There were gadgets and dolls and all sorts of toys.
Enough to seduce even the most devout girls and boys.
Unfortunately, it seemed, no one was completely exempt
From this seasonal virus that did all of us tempt.

The priests and prophets and certainly the kings
Were all so consumed with the desire for “things!”
It was rare, if at all, that you’d hear of the reason
For the origin of this whole holy-day season.

A baby, it seems, once had been born
In the mid-east somewhere on that first holy-day morn.
But what does that mean for folks like us,
Who’ve lost ourselves in the hoopla and fuss?

Can we re-learn the art of wondering and waiting,
Of hoping and praying, and anticipating?
Can we let go of all the things and the stuff?
Can we open our hands and our hearts long enough?

Can we open our eyes and open our ears?
Can we find him again after all of these years?
Will this year be different from all the rest?
Will we be able to offer him all of our best?

So many questions, unanswered thus far,
As wise men seeking the home of the star.
Where do we begin how do we start
To make for the child a place in our heart?

Perhaps we begin by letting go
Of our limits on hope, and of the stuff that we know.
Let go of the shopping, of the chaos and fuss,
Let go of the searching, let Christmas find us.

We open our hearts, our hands and our eyes,
To see the king coming in our own neighbours’ cries.
We look without seeking what we think we’ve earned,
But rather we’re looking for relationships spurned.

With him he brings wholeness and newness of life
For brother and sister, for husband and wife.
The Christ-child comes not by our skill,
But rather he comes by his own Father’s will.

We can’t make him come with parties and bright trees,
But only by getting down on our knees.
He’ll come if we wait amidst our affliction,
Coming in spite of, not by our restriction.

His coming will happen of this there’s no doubt.
The question is whether we’ll be in or out.
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”
Do you have the courage to peer through the lock?

A basket on your porch, a child in your reach.
A baby to love, to feed and to teach.
He’ll grow in wisdom as God’s only Son.
How far will we follow this radical one?

He’ll lead us to challenge the way that things are.
He’ll lead us to follow a single bright star.
But that will come later if we’re still around.
The question for now: Is the child to be found?

Can we block out commercials, the hype and the malls?
Can we find solitude in our holy halls?
Can we keep alert, keep hope, stay awake?
Can we receive the child for ours and God’s sake?

From on high with the caroling host as he sees us,
He yearns to read on our lips the prayer: Come Lord Jesus!
As Advent begins all these questions make plea.
The only true answer: We will see, we will see.

See you in Church or online in this upcoming Christmas Season!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Kindness is Finding Our Kingdom Time!

I thought that Pastor Nels’ sermon this past Sunday entitled “Finding Your Kingdom Time” was a great follow up to last week’s Attitude of Gratitude Challenge! The scripture was Matthew 25: 31-46, and we were challenged to think about our personal “Kingdom Time” as he mentioned a recent study that revealed we should be spending approximately 11 hours per week in service to the needs of others. In verse 45 of that passage in Matthew, Jesus says, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’

We had a couple of great responses about last week’s Challenge, and I share them below:

1 – Wow- that was fun! After reading that long list, I decided to do something with my grandkids. I took cards and asked them to think of one neighbor who did something nice for them this year and we’d sneak the card into their mailbox. Turns out it was a lot of fun for all of us. They decided to give them some of their left-over Halloween candy and took the card to their door. Thank you for your kindness in “nudging” us! It is what Thanksgiving is all about!

2. As directed, I printed me a copy of the Attitude of Gratitude Challenge last week, read it, then put it where I could refer to it during Thanksgiving week. With the challenge in mind, I was surprised to see that I had a score of 10 to report back! As I counted my blessings, I counted this opportunity to make me more aware of my need to be grateful!

Thank you to those who shared their stories, and thanks to Pastor Nels for keeping us mindful of our Kingdom Time!

SECRET SISTER CHRISTMAS PARTY

Saying The Right Thing: True Thanksgiving

In one of the Peanuts comic strips, Lucy’s feeling sorry for herself and she laments, “My life is a drag. I’m completely fed up. I’ve never felt so low in my life.”

Her little brother Linus tries to console her and he says, “Lucy, when you’re in a mood like this, you should try to think of things you have to be thankful for; in other words, count your blessings.”

To that, Lucy says, “Ha! That’s a good one! I could count my blessings on one finger! I’ve never had anything and I never will have anything. I don’t get half the breaks that other people do. Nothing ever goes right for me! And you talk about counting blessings! You talk about being thankful! What do I have to be thankful for?”

Linus says, “Well, for one thing, you have a little brother who loves you.”

With that, Lucy runs and hugs little brother Linus as she cries tears of joy, and while she’s hugging him tightly, Linus says, “Every now and then, I say the right thing.”

Right now I’m going to say the right thing to you: We have a God who loves us. If that doesn’t make us sing the song of thanksgiving, I don’t know what would.

When things don’t seem to going well or when we don’t feel good about ourselves. How great it is to know that we have a God and a Church that loves us.

Thank you Lord for blessing us with McCormick Methodist Church.

See you in Church or online this Sunday! Happy Thanksgiving!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Kindness Update – Take The Attitude of Gratitude Challenge!

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to take this Southern Plate Attitude of Gratitude Challenge! It would be fun to hear back from you with the number of these you accomplished during Thanksgiving week (18 would be a perfect score)! Make a copy of the challenge and place it where you see it regularly and exercise your “Attitude of Gratitude”! Use the link at the bottom of this Kindness Update to report your score – no names, as usual! Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks to Lindy Stahlman for sharing this!

Josiah and Jessica did some early Christmas shopping to fill their shoeboxes with gifts for children in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child project.

National Collection Week for the boxes was November 13-20, so their gifts have been delivered to one of the collection sites. They chose this Amazing Journey of a Shoebox Gift that began with them and results in Evangelism, Discipleship, and Multiplication as the gifts are collected and delivered.

From children to seniors, people pack shoebox gifts each year to bless children in need around the world. Josiah and Jessica will be able to track their gifts to see where they go and who gets them . . . that will be interesting information that hopefully they might share with us!

MEN N MINISTRY
REPORT ON NOVEMBER 7 MEETING
NEXT MEETING IS JANUARY 9

The Methodist men held their last meeting of the year on Tuesday, November 7.  Our next meeting date is January 9,2024

On November 7, we had a great time in Christian fellowship. The dinner meal of chicken chili by Larry Ream and a great salad by Gordon Waine was delightful. We had an interesting speaker. Jim Hughes from FCA shared his testimonial about his God loving health witness. Bob Rennie did the devotional.

During the business discussions, we voted to donate monies to the following groups.
  • $300 to Elder basket Native Americans (Lola Rek)
  • $300 to Fellowship Hour Goodies (Carol Myers)
  • $250 to St. Andrews Feed the Hungry Program with left over non harvested crops
We have cooks, speaker and devotion volunteers to start 2024. The only disappointment to report about the November meeting was the attendance.. Let’s pray it will improve next year.

HAVE YOU TAKEN INVENTORY LATELY?

The renown teacher and author Dr. David McLennon tells a story of his very first job in a small town general store. This was the day before mails and supermarket chains at least it was in his community. At age thirteen he was hired as a handy boy. He would sweep the flour, bag items for customers, put up stock. On one particular Saturday, he recalled, he heard the owner say to one of the clerks “It’s that time of the year again, it’s time to take inventory.” Dr. McLennon wrote that this was a word that had not yet entered into his vocabulary. When an opportune moment arrived, he went up to the kindly older man and asked, Sir, what is an inventory? Patiently the owner explained that it was a time when you made a list of everything that you had from groceries on the shelves to wrapping paper and string. Still somewhat puzzled, the young McLennon then asked, Why?

“Well,” responded the owner, “it’s easy to forget exactly how much you have each year. Every now and then you have to take an inventory just to see what all you have.”

That little story, to me, pretty well sums up what Thanksgiving is all about. It is a time when each of us needs to ask ourselves the question: Have I taken inventory of my life lately? Have I made an effort to count all the things that I do have in life instead of complaining about the things that I don’t have. It is a good exercise especially when we are of a mind to brood or whine in self pity. Have you taken inventory lately?

What I am suggesting here is not some shallow “count your blessings” platitude. But from time to time, in a genuine kind of a way, we need to sit down and do some talking to ourselves about all of the gifts and opportunities and challenges that God has given each one of us. Perhaps there is a deep underlying wisdom in the children’s poem that says: “Count your blessings one by one, and you might be surprised what the Lord has done.”

See you in Church or online this Thanksgiving and Stewardship Sunday!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Kindness is Honoring Our Veterans!

It’s heartwarming to read about all of the eating establishments in our country that, in the spirit of “You Served Us – Let Us Serve You”, run specials for our military veterans on their special day in November. One that especially caught my attention this year is Golden Corral who, for 22 years, has provided a complimentary meal to show appreciation to all men and women who are serving and who have served in the U.S. Military. During that time, they have served 6 million free meals and they have donated over $17.5 million to the Disabled American Veterans organization!

This peaked my interest to find other businesses who show their appreciation to veterans. I found the following information published as a “feast of freebies, meals and deals to honor those who have served”: Applebee’s, Arby’s, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s, Chili’s, Circle K, Cracker Barrel, Dunkin’ Donuts, Hardee’s, Huddle House, IHop, Little Caesar’s, Logan’s Roadhouse, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Red Robin, Sonic Drive-In, Starbucks, Texas Roadhouse, Wendy’s, and Zaxby’s. And these were just the ones I recognized!

Now that’s a lot of free food for some very deserving folks! While it would be difficult to do, it’s too bad they don’t allow “take-outs” and/or make deliveries to those disabled veterans who are unable to make it to the restaurants – hopefully, there are volunteer organizations that provide such a service. Or, even better than a meal, maybe it’s up to us to pay them a visit and give them a personal “thank you” ourselves, remembering this passage from John 15: 12-13: “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Thanks to all who are serving or have served – we appreciate you!

This week’s Kindness Entry: This is an act of kindness that I heard about this week. A friend of mine shared that while she was in line at Food Lion the other day, the cashier who was just coming on duty asked if she could go in front of her to purchase her drink so that she could report for duty, which my friend obliged. The cashier handling the sale told her fellow cashier, “You should offer to pay for the groceries of the lady behind you for her kindness”. To the surprise of my friend, the cashier did just that – she had the groceries added to the cost of her drink and paid for my friends groceries valued at $50! My friend said she cried for about 30 minutes she was so surprised and happy!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

STEPHEN MINISTRY

LEARNING MORE

Rich Jackson shared about the MMC Stephen Ministry last Sunday. Our Stephen Ministers are trained to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life, such as grief, divorce, chronic or terminal illness, family woes, loneliness, or relocation.

Their contact information is always located near the end of the BLAST for your reference. Any of those listed will be able to answer your questions, and if you do feel you’d like to have a Stephen Minister, they will have one contact you. By the way, men always work with the men, and women work with the women. You might want to meet for a few weeks, or longer term that is up to you. Time and location is worked out with your Stephen Minister.

There are several ways you can find out more about Stephen Ministry.
  • If you missed the service (Nov 12), or would like to see it again go to our Livestream Archives page
(Be sure to watch Rich’s presentation, which includes a very informative testimony from a CareReceiver and of course, don’t miss Pastor Nels’ sermon, which also gave insight into the Stephen Ministry)

  • The Stephen Ministry website is excellent…. What Is Stephen Ministry? (stephenministries.org)
  • Register for a free of charge, one-hour, on-line live Steven Ministry event! A few of us are registered for a course in December titled, Building a More Caring World, and you are invited to join us! This event introduces a bold, new vision for building a more caring world and connecting all people with Christ’s healing love. During the event, you’ll hear how Stephen Ministries has been equipping people to care and relate with excellence since 1975, how they plan to expand that ministry, and how this vision to make the world a more caring place is already happening. To view the event dates and RSVP, visit: www.stephenministries.org/build

Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2, NRSV).

EPWORTH CHILDREN’S HOME TOUR

Connie Tremsky and the Missions Team invites you to join them on a tour of the Epworth Children’s Home facilities in Columbia. They plan to go in November and hope you will join them. Alpha Continues Each Sunday Through November 19

Alpha is an 11 week course designed to create a space for honest conversation around some of life’s biggest questions. It is designed to provide guests, churched and unchurched, an opportunity to connect with one another while providing the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, and opinions in a safe and caring environment. Alpha helps bring people together while providing the chance to encounter Jesus.

Each week consists of a meal together, viewing a video taped talk and then breaking into small discussion groups. Both Rich and Kim Jackson attended the Alpha Course in 2010, feel free to ask them any questions you may have.

Sign up sheets in the Fellowship Hall.

A Church that Cares

Some years ago, I knew a family that had 5 boys. As with any family, they would compete, fuss, argue and fight often. One would think they did not care for each other until someone from the outside bothered one of them. When that happened, you would see the other 4 move in quickly to defend and rescue. When I was a fire department Chaplain in the low-country, I saw each firefighter make certain that other firefighters were safe. They abided by a motto that stated, “Everybody goes home.” Humans, by design, live longer and function well when they are not alone and are a part of caring community. As much as some try, we are never really alone. People need each other.

This Sunday we celebrate our Stephen Ministry. This ministry offers unconditional love and care to all in our community that need it. I pray that all here will feel welcome to have a Stephen Minister in your life when you need one. The love and care they share are a gift from God. In closing, I would like to share with you this story I read many years ago.

“Did you ever notice how you can line up six balls in a row,” said Joe. “You hit the first one and the sixth one jumps away at almost the same speed?”

“So what,” said Dick, “you rack them up and then hit the first ball and they all start to move.”

“Well, it is curious to me,” said Joe, “how the first one in line and the last one in line are the ones that move, while the rest stand still.”

Joe was observing God’s physical laws of the transmission of force at work. Each ball in the line had a role to play, even though most of them seemed to stand still. Even while staying in place, each one transmitted force to the next one. Two of the billiard balls took dramatic action, but all had a role in it.

The forces of humanity find each of us influencing many others. We do not live alone. The supplying of our food, clothing, and basic needs of our spiritual and physical lives is all a part of a larger scene.

Millions of people are involved. Some, who seem to stand still, may brag of their stability and their freedom from responsibility in world-wide crisis; but we all are involved in the forces and the messages that go forth to others.

We may breed confidence or fear, love or hate, kindness or selfishness. We dare not commit the sin of Cain, who arrogantly asked the question of God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” for God’s answer is, “Yes, you are.”

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Kindness is the Thread That Binds Us!

The “Kindness Thread” that binds the hearts of the members of our Prayers & Squares Small Group is very strong, as you will see from this story shared with us by Lola Rek. The beautiful quilt you see above was created with Kindness in every stitch! Thanks for sharing, Lola!

Dear Linda, Remember our friend Belinda Ramsey? (She is a kind friend who has done beautiful quilting projects for MMC and also creates prayer squares for our quilting ministry.) This is her granddaughter, Kate, who is in a Christian college in Charleston. She knows about our group through Belinda. She made this “prayer quilt” for a band classmate who was recovering from a car accident with a broken leg and other injuries.

She asked his girlfriend what he liked and it was Star Wars so she bought the fabric, went home and made this reversible quilt in one day for him. She asked Belinda about the ties and she even put the strings into it.

She took it to band practice and the teacher had her explain about it and when she finished, he and the whole class came up to tie and say a prayer. What a wonderful and thoughtful gesture!

Belinda’s family not only helps us with making prayer squares, now one of them is making prayer quilts in college. God is Great! Have a great day, y’all – we are so blessed – Lola

Through the lives of young people like Kate, quilting will continue to repurpose scraps of fabric and create beautiful masterpieces that remind us of God’s Love that pieces together the scraps of our lives to make us beautiful new creations! Like quilts, our lives may unravel at times, but we can all be stitched back together with God’s Love! We are so thankful for the kindness of the Prayer & Squares ministry at MMC that touches hundreds of lives!

First Tuesday
Stephen Ministry Corner
November 2023

Stephen Ministry at McCormick Methodist Church will be celebrating 18 years of service this month!!

Our motto is “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2) Over the last 18 years we have walked alongside many people in our community and shared their burdens. However, there is something we’ve noticed …

Sometimes people need help asking for help.

People are social creatures, ready to both give and accept help, and yet many of us who could use some help struggle to actually ask for it. There are many reasons … fear of appearing ‘needy,’ not wanting to be a burden, fear of appearing incapable, thinking our burden isn’t too much for us (even when it is!!). Over time this can make us miserable and bitter. And since Covid came into our lives and remote work became a reality, things have only gotten worse.

Here at the McCormick Methodist Church, we have a solution for this. We have a Stephen Ministry program, active since 2005. It is the ministry of this program to ‘share one another’s burdens.’ We are ready to come alongside you – or your friends, neighbors, co-workers, or relatives – and provide support for as long as needed.

Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders through the church office at (864)852-2394. Please leave a voicemail if we aren’t available … ALL communications are confidential.

Halloween and All Saints

While the world around us celebrates Halloween, The Church celebrates All Saint’s Day. I would like to share with you an article by Joe Lovino.

All Saints Day: A holy day John Wesley Loved
by Joe Iovino

November 1 is All Saints Day, a sometimes-overlooked holy day in Methodist congregations. It is not nearly as well known as the day before, All Hallows’ (Saints’) Eve, better known as Halloween, but is far more important in the life of the church.

John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, enjoyed and celebrated All Saints Day. In a journal entry from November 1, 1767, Wesley calls it “a festival I truly love.” On the same day in 1788, he writes, “I always find this a comfortable day.” The following year he calls it “a day that I peculiarly love.”

This may sound odd. Methodists don’t believe in saints. Right?

Well, yes… and no.

Wesley cautioned against holding saints in too high regard. The Articles of Religion that he sent to the Methodists in America in 1784, include a statement against “invocation of saints” (Article XIV—Of Purgatory, Book of Discipline ¶104). Wesley did not see biblical evidence for the practice and discouraged Methodists from participating.

However, he also advised against disregarding the saints altogether.

In an All Saints Day journal entry dated Monday, November 1, 1756, Wesley writes, “How superstitious are they who scruple giving God solemn thanks for the lives and deaths of his saints!” If your 18th century English is as rusty as mine, it might help to know that the word scruple means not doing something because you think it’s wrong.

Tradition: A Theological Guideline
In studying John Wesley’s theological method, scholars have found four, inter-related theological guidelines: Scripture, tradition, experience, and reason. These are the sources of our understanding of our faith.

By tradition we mean all that has gone before us in the Christian church. We are part of a long history that goes back through John Wesley, to the early days of the Church, and the apostles of Jesus. When we think theologically we need to keep in mind the creeds, prayers, sermons, books, music, and all other ways Christians have understood the work of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in their lives.

Those to glory gone
All Saints Day is an opportunity to give thanks for those who have gone before us in the faith. It is a time to celebrate our history, what Methodists call the tradition of the church.

From the early days of Christianity, there is a sense that the Church consists of not only all living believers, but also all who have gone before us. For example, in Hebrews 12 the author encourages Christians to remember that a “great cloud of witnesses” surrounds us encouraging us, cheering us on.

Charles Wesley, John’s brother, picks up on this theme in his hymn that appears in the United Methodist Hymnal as “Come, Let Us Join our Friends Above,” #709. In the first verse, he offers a wonderful image of the Church through the ages:

Let saints on earth unite to sing, with those
to glory gone,
for all the servants of our King in earth and heaven, are one.

On All Saints Day we can remember all those who are part of the “communion of saints” we confess whenever we recite The Apostles’ Creed. We share stories of those “to glory gone.”

Retelling these stories grounds us in our history. These memories teach us how God has provided for us through the generosity and sacrifice of those who have come before us. The stories of the saints encourage us to be all God has created us to be.

Saints on earth
Charles Wesley’s hymn tells us those “to glory gone” are joined by the “saints on earth.” We think of the inspirational people with whom we worship on Sunday, and those across the world we will never meet. We celebrate fellow Methodists who inspire us, and those of other denominations whose lives encourage us. We give thanks for those with whom we agree, as well as those whose views we do not share.

Additionally, we remember and pray for our sisters and brothers in Christ who faithfully follow Jesus in places where being labeled a Christian puts them in harm’s way.

One song
On All Saints Day, we recognize that we are part of a giant choir singing the same song. It is the song Jesus taught his disciples; a tune that has resonated for more than 2,000 years; a melody sung in glory and on the earth. Our great privilege is to add our voices to this chorus.

The last verse of “Come, Let Us Join our Friends Above” encourages us to sing faithfully while on earth, so we might join the heavenly chorus one day.

Our spirits too shall quickly join, like theirs with glory crowned, and shout to see our Captain’s sign, to hear His trumpet sound.

O that we now might grasp our Guide! O that the word were given! Come, Lord of Hosts, the waves divide, and land us all in heaven.

On All Saints Day, let us give thanks for both the saints in glory and those on earth, who have led us to Jesus. As they have shared the gospel with us, may we add our voices so someone else may hear about the grace and love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God for the lives of his saints.

See you in Church or Online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Boo It Up Big!

I love the quote above – “Boo It up Big” – that was on the card in Jessica’s Halloween gift from her Secret Sister. We like for trick or treaters today to be able to enjoy this fun day safely, and praise God, there are many kind efforts to see that this happens. Jesus taught in parables, and I love the way the author of the story below teaches us all – children and adults – a valuable lesson from the pumpkin – that we carve into the focal point of our Halloween celebrations – a Jack-O-Lantern!.

Pumpkin Parable
By Anne E. Thompson

We are a little like the pumpkin (some of us even look a bit like pumpkins)! But that isn’t what I mean. We have gunky stuff inside, and God is like the farmer, and cleans it all out. Sometimes that is uncomfortable, and sometimes it takes a long time, but it is necessary to stop the rot.

Then God carves a face on us. We become something different, something special. This can be painful, and sometimes life, as the face is carved, is hurtful. But it’s necessary, and it changes us.

Finally, God will put his own light inside of us, so that we become part of his plan, we have a purpose, and we can shine out to show others the way to go. We have part of God, living right inside us, and nothing can take that away.

As we celebrate Halloween today, may you “Boo It up Big” and may your Jack O Lanterns shine with the Light of Jesus!

Our kindness entry this week is a good example of shining our lights for Jesus: At the Dollar Tree in Evans, this very nice teenager at the checkout asked me, “Has anyone told you today that Jesus loves you?” I replied “Well, no, but I sure would love to hear it.” After that he said, “well, He does!”. I thanked Him, of course, and told him I hoped he had a blessed day – and I thanked God for revealing His Holy Spirit to me through that young man!

Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders and begin a ‘fellowship’ with a Stephen Minister. We may be reached through the church office at (864)852-2394.

MMC FOOD PANTRY
DONATIONS NEEDED

Our church has its own food pantry, which is located next to the nursery in the back hall, off the atrium. Folks come by and get bags of needed groceries as needed. The supplies are running low and the church family is asked to donate the following…

Canned vegetables
Canned fruit or individual servings
Peanut butter (small jars)

Thank you in advance for your generosity. Please leave your items in the room.

FELLOWSHIP HOUR

It’s wonderful to see our guests and our church family sit down together with a cup of coffee and a treat after church! Many new friendships are developing!

It’s time to sign up to be the hosts for October, November and December. Please take a minute on Sunday to sign up for a time to bring some goodies. They do not have to be home-made, remember! If you have any questions, please contact Carol Myers.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE COMMITTEE

The Congregational Care Committee wants you to know they are there to help you if you ever need transportation, meals or a visitor! Please contact Kim Jackson if you or someone you know needs help or if you would like to be added to the list of volunteers.
