The Heart of Servants

A graduating student at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, had just received his appointment from the bishop. He was grousing and grumbling because the appointment didn’t fit what he felt he deserved. Another student, in a loving but unsympathetic way patted him on the back and said, “You know the world is a better place because Michelangelo didn’t say, ‘I don’t do ceilings.'”

He lifted up Jesus for his friend to see because he understood that To Serve Is To Follow.

And if you stop to think about it, that’s the spirit of servanthood. The world is a better place because a German monk named Martin Luther didn’t say, “I don’t do doors.”

The world is a better place, because an Oxford don named John Wesley didn’t say, “I don’t do fields.”

Go from the beginning of the Bible to the end, and you will see over and over again the story of men and women who had servant hearts, minds and spirits. And the world is a better place, because:

Moses didn’t say, “I don’t do rivers.”
Noah didn’t say, “I don’t do arks.”
Jeremiah didn’t say, “I don’t do weeping.”
Amos didn’t say, “I don’t do speeches.”
Rahab didn’t say, “I don’t do carpets.”
Ruth didn’t say, “I don’t do mothers-in-law.”
David didn’t say, “I don’t do giants.”
Mary didn’t say, “I don’t do virgin births.”
Mary Magdalene didn’t say, “I don’t do feet.”
John didn’t say, “I don’t do deserts.”
Peter didn’t say, “I don’t do Gentiles.”
Paul didn’t say, “I don’t do letters.”
Jesus didn’t say, “I don’t do crosses.”

And we at McCormick Methodist Church will never say, “I don’t do Jesus. I don’t do eternal life. I don’t do a life of holiness.”

See you in Church or online this Sunday when we do worship. Bring someone with you so they can do it too!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Kindness Melts Hearts!

Unlike many of my friends at MMC, I’ve never used a snow shovel, but I hear it requires a lot of work! So, when I read the kindness article below by Andy Corbley dated February 16, 2024, on the Good News Network, I was so amazed my heart melted!

A Chinese commercial trucking company paid nearly $30,000 to truck thousands of pounds of snow from the frozen northern city of Harbin to a special needs school in the tropical southern metropolis of Guangzhou. Officially, it was the trucking company’s demonstration run of their refrigerated trucks, but for the drivers and staff, it was all about seeing the children’s joy.

Leaving Harbin on January 28th, the convoy drove 1,960 miles, arriving at Xingzhi Children’s Growth Center on February 1. The trucks then dumped out the snow and gave almost 2,000 children with autism and other impairments the chance to experience snow for the first time ever.

“We’re giving the snow to a special school in the south, giving a chance for children to experience the fun of snow fighting and making snowmen,” a trucking company employee said. One teacher said, “It was a nature lesson. Usually, we give them pictures in class and tell them that this is snow, and this is a snowman, They really saw the real thing this time!”

As the Creator of all things, God is the only One who can cause snow to fall upon the earth. In scripture we find beautiful symbolism of snow, one that teaches the concept of purity, which comes from Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins. What better time than Lent for a story like this to turn our thoughts to Psalm 51: 7 – “wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.”! Let it be so, Lord!

This week’s Kindness Entry: The recipient’s response to an act of kindness often catches us by surprise. This was the case in a story I recently read by a woman who was in the depths of sadness due to the loss of a family member when she encountered the clerk at a coffee shop. The clerk was distressed because the coffee machine was down, and she was unable to brew and serve hot coffee. The woman ordered a cold brew and told the clerk to “hang in there”. When she picked up her order, she noticed a message on the cup: The clerk had scrawled next to a heart, “your soul is golden.” The clerk had no idea of what the woman was going through, but the warmth of that small and unexpected gesture, from a stranger moved her deeply. Though still sad, the woman said. “That gesture made the rest of my day.”

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

1) Be a blessing to others by sharing your Act of Kindness (no names please) on our website, or use this link! Then check back each week to learn how others are passing on acts of kindness! The link is https://www.mccormickmc.org/acts-of-kindness

2) There is a Kindness box in the library on the window sill, along with paper and pencil. Share your God-Wink, perhaps someone else will be inspired!

COINS FOR LENT

Many thanks to all who have Contributed to our Coins For Lent. It is not too late to find a calendar in our Fellowship Hall and participate in this Lenten program.

Revenue from this giving opportunity will be given to the new women’s shelter opening in January of 2025 at Liberty Hill in McCormick County. There will be space to occupy 20 women who need recovery from broken homes and a chance to train for a job so they can become self-sufficient as the shelter has partnered with Piedmont Technical College.

The shelter will not receive government funds and is thought to be the only shelter of its kind in McCormick County. The staff of the shelter plans that its residents shall experience the love of Christ and the shelter will be a Christian Christ-Centered ministry.

We will be hearing more from Liberty Hill soon.

Each Sunday, pray as a family for the project and the people who will benefit from your gifts. Our giving begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes with Holy Saturday. During Lent, Sundays are for worship and praise to God and are reflected with a weekly day of prayer.

There is a jar in the Fellowship hall to collect your coins, let’s watch it fill up by Easter!  You may also donate online.

God Is Seeking You in Love

Fred Craddock tells the story of his father, who spent years of his life hiding from the God who was seeking him out:

“When the pastor used to come from my mother’s church to call on him, my father would say, ‘You don’t care about me. I know how churches are. You want another pledge, another name, right? Another name, another pledge, isn’t that the whole point of church? Get another name, another pledge.’

My nervous mother would run to the kitchen, crying, for fear somebody’s feelings would be hurt. When we had an evangelistic campaign the pastor would bring the evangelist, introduce him to my father and then say, ‘Sic him, get him! Sic him, get him!’ My father would always say the same thing. ‘You don’t care about me! Another name, another pledge. Another name, another pledge! I know about churches.’

I guess I heard it a thousand times. One time he didn’t say it. He was at the Veteran’s Hospital. He was down to 74 pounds. They had taken out the throat, put in a metal tube, and said, ‘Mr. Craddock, you should have come earlier. But this cancer is awfully far advanced. We’ll give radium, but we don’t know.’

I went in to see him. In every window—potted plants and flowers. Everywhere there was a place to set them—potted plants and flowers. Even in that thing that swings out over your bed they put food on, there was a big flower. There was by his bed a stack of cards 10 or 15 inches deep. I looked at the cards sprinkled in the flowers. I read the cards beside his bed. And I want to tell you, every card, every blossom, every potted plant from groups, Sunday School classes, women’s groups, youth groups, men’s bible class, of my mother’s church—every one of them. My father saw me reading them. He could not speak, but he took a Kleenex box and wrote something on the side from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. . . . He wrote on the side, ‘In this harsh world, draw your breath in pain to tell my story.’ I said, ‘What is your story, Daddy?’ And he wrote, ‘I was wrong.’”

It is not until you know God is seeking you in love, not in condemnation; it is not until that moment that the gospel becomes Good News for you.

See you in Church or online this Sunday where God will reach out to you in love.

Your Pastor,
Nels

Fourth Sunday in Lent
Scripture Lesson: John 3: 1-21
Message: “The Magic Questions and the Answer of Love”

STEPHEN MINISTRY CORNER
FIRST TUESDAY

Easter is in March this year … albeit the very last day in March!

Lent has started … and it’s a time of solemnity and self-reflection when we confess our failings and resolve to live a better life and be better persons, based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. Lent ends with the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, and the realization that He died so that we may live.

An important theme in the Lenten Season is the humanity of Christ. We are reviewing again the story of how, in Jesus, God became fully human and fully experienced the wide range of emotions we all encounter in life. Jesus experienced joy and love in his service to his Father, but he also experienced loneliness, sadness, temptation, hurt, disappointment, grief, and abandonment. These feelings were all part of being human.

Another part of being human is needing help from each other. God never intended us to be completely self-sufficient. Part of God’s plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it. We need to remember Paul telling us, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” [Galatians 6:2 (KJV)]

Here at McCormick Methodist Church our Stephen Ministers are here, ready and willing, to give that help to those struggling with difficult times. Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders through the Church office at (864) 852-2394.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Stay Prayed Up For Lent!

It was a refreshing experience while watching t. v. to see a 30-minute prayer commercial. I didn’t know its origin exactly, but I did see the word “Hallow” as it ended. In a recent conversation with our Dinner for 8 group, I learned that Hallow is a prayer “app” that you can put on your phone! Of course, I checked their website to learn more, and this is what I found.

Hallow is an American Catholic meditation and prayer app owned by Hallow, Inc. that began in 2018. It provides audio-guided Bible stories, prayers, meditations, Christian music, etc. The app has made history by becoming the first religious app to reach the number one spot on Apple’s app store.

Catholic actors Mark Wahlberg and Jonathan Roumie (who played Jesus Christ in The Chosen television series) say they joined the Hallow prayer app as narrators in order to help people “grow closer to God.” The movement to include prayer in one’s daily activities has seen a recent boom due in part to an ad for the app that ran during this year’s Super Bowl.

Roumie stated that he believes the Hallow app is “filling a need” for people wanting to connect to God and improve their prayer life, adding that he thought it was great the app’s Super Bowl commercial demonstrated that. In the ad, viewers are encouraged to join the app to stay “prayed up” throughout the 40 days of Lent. Whether or not you’ve seen the commercial, you might want to click on the link below to view it:

In the wake of the ad’s Super Bowl airing, Hallow CEO Alex Jones said the app experienced its biggest spike in downloads ever, surpassing Netflix in the app store! Philippians 4:6 reminds us to “pray about everything”. As Christians, we have to be excited about the impact that Hallow is having, and hopefully, we are staying “prayed up” on our personal Lenten journeys!

PRAYER QUILT FOR BILLY MOON

The beautiful prayer quilt created for Billy Moon by McCormick Methodist Church’s Prayers & Squares Quilt Ministry Group was delivered to him last Sunday, February 25 after being dedicated during morning worship service. Billy is shown holding the quilt with son-in-law Reid Compton and daughter Mitzi (standing behind Jessica Kidd), Linda Kidd and Frances Kidd. Billy is wearing his veterans cap, having served as a U.S. Navy E-9 master chief.

He began his chemo treatments for acute leukemia this past Monday. Billy sends a heartfelt “Thank You” for the prayer quilt and all of the prayers from the congregation at MMC and encourages everyone to please keep praying!

MMC FOOD PANTRY
REFILL TIME

The food pantry is in need of some jelly and jams to go with the peanut butter. They request smaller jars, so the filled food bags are not too heavy.

They could also use egg noodles and smaller plain pastas to go with canned meats for casseroles.

Thank you for helping to keep the pantry filled and ready for those who stop by in need of food. Your sharing is quietly helping others in our community.

Send Out Your Invitations

I will begin this challenge with a funny story.

He was not too well-educated and his manner was somewhat rough and crude. He became a Christian and took the Lord’s requirement seriously. He kept pestering his pastor to put him to work. Finally, the minister handed him a list of ten names with this explanation: “These are all members of the church, but they seldom attend. Some of them are prominent people in the community. Contact them about being more faithful. Here is some church stationary to write letters. Get them back in church.” The man accepted the challenge with rugged determination and enthusiasm. About three weeks later a letter from a prominent physician whose name had been on the list arrived at the church office. Inside was a large check and a brief note: “Dear Pastor, Enclosed is my check for $1,000 to help make up for my missing church so much, but be assured that I will be present this Lord’s Day and each Lord’s Day following. I will not by choice miss services again. Sincerely… P.S. Would you please tell your secretary that there is only one `T’ in dirty and no `C’ in Skunk.”

There are hundreds of new people living in McCormick that have moved here in the past few years. There are others who have not attended church at all. None of them will not come unless you invite them!

As they use to say on an old TV show, “Your Mission, if you choose to accept it…” Well, your mission, is to write and invite people to attend our Church. Lent and Easter is a great time for newcomers to start attending to find Christ.

Remember your mission! I will ask you how many have you invited.

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – The Give and Take of Lent

In our 40 days of self-examination during Lent, we spend time thinking of the unhealthy things we should give up – such as junk foods, but there is also a healthy trend today toward taking up some positive things as well. Below are lists of helpful suggestions for both – they were found on a website appropriately entitled The Holy Mess, which might be a good description of our lives! However we choose to handle this season of reflection, it’s important to remember the key word is UP as we look up to God for strength!

10 Things To Give Up During Lent
1. Social media, 2. TV or Netflix, 3. Gossip, 4. Complaining, 5. Worry, 6. Swearing, 7. Music in the car (use the time for prayer instead), 8. Snooze button, 9. Spending with a credit card, 10. Bragging

10 Things You Can Take Up During Lent

  1. Donate food items to a food pantry for each day of Lent (40 items).
  2. Do a random act of kindness each day.
  3. Complete a Lent Bible reading plan, reading a Bible verse each day.
  4. Read a Lent devotion each day.
  5. Post a Bible verse on social media each day for 40 days.
  6. Post something you are grateful for each day for 40 days.
  7. Clear out clutter and donate 40 items.
  8. Spend 15 minutes each day decluttering. Pray and thank God for your blessings of abundance.
  9. Make a monetary donation to a charity of your choice, perhaps $1 or $5 for each day in Lent – (i.e. McCormick MC’s “Change for Lent” initiative!)
  10. Write in a journal to reflect on all you have learned during the season.

This week’s Kindness entry: The lady in front of me at the Post Office counter this week grabbed her cane as she was leaving. Looking down, I noticed that the laces on one of her tennis shoes was untied (the strings were long and I thought might cause her to stumble). When I pointed it out to her she told me she knew it but she couldn’t reach down that far to tie it. I asked if I could do it, and she said, “Oh, would you?”. I had to get on my knees to do it, and for just a moment I thought of Jesus on his knees to wash the feet of His disciples. I certainly don’t consider my action in the magnitude of Jesus, but I was very thankful to have that pleasant reminder of Him!

MMC FOOD PANTRY
REFILL TIME

The food pantry is in need of some jelly and jams to go with the peanut butter. They request smaller jars, so the filled food bags are not too heavy.

Thank you for helping to keep the pantry filled and ready for those who stop by in need of food. Your sharing is quietly helping others in our community.

ATRIUM TEAM MEETING
THURSDAY, FEB 29 9AM

Sue Wurtzbacher and Marge Radosevich have called a meeting of all those interested in helping maintain the MMC atrium. They will be asking for suggestions as to what types of plants would be appropriate for this very special peaceful area. They would like to mainly stick with perennials, with splashes of color using annuals. Low maintenance preferable.

Byron Thompson has set up and maintains the sprinkler system. The soil is very easy to dig in – no clay!!!

If you are interested, come by the church on Thursday, Feb 29 at 9am. Bring your gloves, clippers and shovel, if we have a little time, maybe we can do some clean-up!

If you cannot attend, but would like to help in the future, please contact Marge or Sue.

MEN N MINISTRY
DINNER MEETING
TUESDAY, MARCH 5 6PM

Methodist Men n Ministry will be having their March meeting on March 5,2023. As always dinner will be served at 6pm. It will be followed by a devotional by Larry Ream. Dinner is being prepared by MMC’s Chef, John Yerdon and will be one of his famous pork entrees. No need to sign up, just show up. Feel free to bring a friend or neighbor!

Our original speaker is unavailable. We have been lucky to get a wonderful replacement.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is developing 50-year plans for each of the eight planning basins including the Savannah River Basin. These will form the foundation for a new state water plan. Harry Shelley is a stakeholder member of the in the Upper Savannah River Basin Council and will provide an interim status of the developing multi-year effort for our river basin. I once heard a Chinese businessman explain his 100-year plan. The answer was one word: patience.

Come and obtain an understanding of the resources and knowledge needed to develop a workable plan. Bless Harry

COINS FOR LENT

During Lent, many of us are reminded once again to examine our lifestyles and ask, “What can we do for others?” Part of faith formation at any age is compassion and offering a serving heart to our neighbors. Lent is a good time to commit to giving money to a project that helps those in need.

The Stewardship Committee has come up with a fun way to serve with “Coins for Lent.”

Go to the MMC website to view a daily guide. It will remind us of all we have and how little others may have.
Now, before Ash Wednesday, make a container to collect the money. Be creative or use a jar, tub, or coin bank you already have. Place it where the entire family can see it (and contribute to it).

You may want to contribute a quarter for every item on the giving calendar. You may want to simply collect loose change and give whatever coins you have for each item.
Each Sunday, pray as a family for the project and the people who will benefit from your gifts.

Our giving begins concludes with Holy Saturday. During Lent, Sundays are for worship and praise to God and are reflected with a weekly day of prayer.

There will be a box in the Fellowship hall to collect your coins, let’s watch it fill up by Easter!

Ambition: Bigger Is Not Always Better

Micky Anders tells a story.

The American businessman was at the pier of a small, coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied only a little while.

The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish. The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The American then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late; fish a little; play with my children; take siesta with my wife, Maria; stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos; I have a full and busy life, señor.”

The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing; and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat; with the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats; eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman, you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then Los Angeles and eventually New York City where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, señor, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “Fifteen to 20 years.”

“But what then, señor?”

The American laughed and said that’s the best part. “When the time is right, you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich; you would make millions.”

“Millions, señor? Then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire and move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

Sometimes our American culture thinks only about things that are bigger. Bigger is always better. We get so caught up in the success syndrome of our culture that we forget the way of Jesus which called us to simplicity and, in our text this Sunday, to a life of self-denial.

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – A Legacy of Kindness!

Despite our recent chilly mornings, the calendar tells us that spring is getting closer – oh, happy day! With spring gardening in mind, I couldn’t help but think of planting seeds of kindness when I read the obituaries in last week’s Journal Messenger & Reporter. My heart was touched by the entry for Jim Brewer who went to be with the Lord on February 3. A lifelong McCormick resident who lived at Forest View Manor, I imagine that members of our small group who are in ministry there knew him. While I know Jim’s brothers, I did not know him that well; after reading his beautiful obituary, however, I wish I had known him better:

“Jim R was a beloved character with a big heart, deeply devoted to his family and his Forest View community. Following his wishes, there will be no formal service. Instead, honoring his memory, he requests that you perform a kind deed for someone, following the example set by his friend, Kate Dorn.

In Matthew 25:40, it is written, “Truly, I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Let us honor Jim’s memory by spreading kindness and compassion.”

Jim’s friend – Kate Dorn – was also my friend – and she was just as Jim described. An educator who put “kindness” in every textbook and interaction with her students and all who knew her, there are many beautiful flowers blooming for God today in the garden Kate so carefully tended during her time on earth!

Many seeds of kindness were planted and scattered during Random Acts of Kindness Week last week with 60-plus hearts placed on the Kindness Board in the hallway at church! Each heart represents a kindness observed or carried out personally by kind souls. And just think of all of those that were done in secret! While we don’t do kindness for recognition, it does our hearts good to acknowledge the goodness in the world every now and then! May we all be inspired to cultivate kindness gardens like Kate!

This week’s Kindness entry: This act of kindness was shared with me by my sister-in-law just the other day. She had inserted her debit card into the slot to make a payment and was quite disturbed when her card wasn’t returned to her. She went inside the business to find out what she needed to do to retrieve her card and was told they were unable to get into the machine at the time and she would need to check back later. At about that time someone walked up behind her to turn in a card that was kicked back to them when they used the machine – it was hers! In addition to being very relieved, she said she was overcome with gratitude toward the person who had shown such kindness!

A Lenten Prayer for McCormick Methodist Church

Joel Kline wrote this prayer for the Season of Lent. I modified it for our use in this Lenten season.

Gracious God, how blessed we are to live and serve as a community of Your people. Gifted with the beauty of creation surrounding us, lead us into significant relationships that nurture and challenge us, as we experience the promise of life, and are grateful.

Lead us now, O God, as we seek, in this season of Lent, to journey with our eyes fixed on Jesus.

Lead us in righteousness, that our journey might be a journey in which we embrace Christ’s ways of compassion and justice, grace and mercy, hope and right living.

Lead us, God, in peace, as we seek to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

Fill us with a peace that passes all human understanding, a peace the world cannot give to us, neither can it take away.

But, holy God, let us never be satisfied with personal peace alone. Lead us into paths of peacemaking and reconciliation. And God, we pray that You might soften the hearts of those world leaders who are far more inclined to wage war than to seek peace.

God, where there is brokenness, form us into instruments of forgiveness.
Where there is despair, make of us channels of Your hope.
Where there is division, may we be empowered to bring healing and wholeness.
Where darkness abounds, grant us courage to walk in the light, our eyes fixed on Jesus, the light of the world.

God of healing and compassion,

We hold before You now those in special need of Your healing touch …

God, make us mindful of those among us this day who silently hold hurts and brokenness within them. Teach us to look into one another’s eyes and hearts.

We pray for those experiencing pain in their significant relationships, those who are yearning for new beginnings in life. We pray, O God, for young people facing untold pressures and challenges, and for older persons seeking to come to terms with limitations and losses. Whatever our life situations, O God, lead us in paths of right living, our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we pray. Amen.

Will you join me in making this our prayer during this Lenten Season.

See You in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Welcome the Lenten Season with Kindness!

On the day before Ash Wednesday when we begin the Lenten Season of our Christian year, the calendar tells us we also begin Random Acts of Kindness Week which is February 13 – 17 with RAK Day being this Saturday, February 17. In my search to find out if there was any connection to the Lenten Season or Valentine’s Day when this day to emphasize kindness was begun over 30 years ago, I found none.

But I tend to think it might have been somewhat of a “God Wink” because, as we enter the season of remembrance of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice for us, our hearts overflow with humility and kindness, a principle that is mentioned throughout the Bible. And because of God’s supreme example of kindness to us, we are called to show kindness to others. We are even called to “clothe” ourselves with it, as in Paul’s letter to the Colossians:

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Looking at the Kindness Bulletin Board at church, it appears that we are indeed “clothing ourselves with kindness” as the number of hearts attached there has grown since last week – Hopefully, many more will be added this week as we reflect on God’s amazing grace and kindness toward us!

This Kindness entry came in during January: I am sure many of us can recall acts of kindness we observed during the Christmas holidays. I am so happy to report one! For our family Christmas Eve time together, my daughter invited a co-worker who had lost her fiancé to a tragic accident about six months ago. The friend’s father was deceased, her mother was not involved with her daughter’s life at all, and her only child was spending Christmas Eve with her father’s family. I was so touched by my daughter’s kindness in reaching out, and I couldn’t help but think about how many, many less lonely people there would be in the world if we all did that!

ATRIUM

Thanks to the hard work of Sue Wurtzbacher and Marge Radosevich, the atrium is beautiful even in the rain! This picture was captured Sunday morning. Next time you are at church, look at all the color starting to come out. The atrium is a wonderful place to reflect, pray, or chat with friends! The door is never locked, and you are always welcome to use the table out there and enjoy!

An Unexpected Call

The Rev. Billy Strayhorn tells a great story.

There’s a store-front church which is called Almighty God Tabernacle. One Saturday evening, the pastor of this church was working late, and decided to call his wife before he left for home. It was about 10 PM, but his wife did not answer the phone. The pastor let it ring about two dozen times but she didn’t answer. He thought it was a little odd, but decided to finish up a few things and try a few minutes later.

When he tried again, she answered right away. He asked her why she hadn’t answered before, and she said that the phone hadn’t rung at their house. They brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.

The following Monday, the pastor received a call at the church office, which was the phone that he’d used that Saturday night. The man that he spoke with wanted to know why he’d called on Saturday night. The pastor couldn’t figure out what the guy was talking about. Then the guy said, “It rang and rang and rang, but I didn’t answer.”

The pastor then remembered the mishap and apologized for disturbing him, explaining that he’d tried to call his wife. The man said, “That’s okay. Let me tell you my story. You see, I was planning to commit suicide on Saturday night, but before I did, I prayed, ‘God if you’re there, and you don’t want me to do this, give me a sign now.’ At that point my phone started to ring. I looked at the caller ID, and it said, ‘Almighty God’. I was afraid to answer!”

God is still God. God still reaches out through the unexpected and Transforms lives. Sometimes we’re knowingly a part of that great ministry. Sometimes we have no clue. But with us or without our awareness God still transforms lives.

How great it is to know God is still at work!

See You in Church this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Transfiguration Day

Transfiguration is a central part of Orthodox theology. Transfiguration is one of 12 great religious holidays traditionally celebrated by all Orthodox Christians across the world. The holiday commemorates the New Testament’s episode which occurred shortly before Jesus Christ embarked on his last days. He appeared to his disciples in divine glory, so bright that the human eye could hardly stand it.

The Church celebrates the event as proof of the fact that Jesus Christ is the light and glory coming from his Father. It is also regarded as a sign of the voluntary nature of Christ’s sufferings and death for the sake of salvation of the world.

Every mortal being must strive to attain spiritual transfiguration in order to be granted eternal life and eternal bliss, the fathers of the Church insist. And there is only one way to attain it – through unshakable faith and observance of the Testaments.

In Russia, Transfiguration Day, which is celebrated in August is accompanied by the blessing of new crops, usually apples being the first fruit ripening at this time.

STEPHEN MINISTRY CORNER

Pastor Nels called Stephen Ministry the “Ministry of Presence” recently during church. It struck me as a GREAT way to describe Stephen Ministry … we are ‘present’ for our Care Receivers. We don’t judge or try to ‘fix’ … we are just there, we are ‘present,’ to listen to concerns … whether someone wants to talk about loneliness, grief, a health fear, a family relationship … or nothing at all! We are just there … to listen and emphasize … however we can.

Do you need someone to be ‘present’ with you? Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders through the church office at (864) 852-2394.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – RAK is Next Week!

Random Acts of Kindness Week is coming up next week – February 13 – 19 – with the actual RAK Day on Saturday, February 17. Of course, Valentine’s Day occurs during that week, so many acts of kindness will happen then! Don’t forget to check the Kindness board at church (shown above) to post your hearts as you shower others. as you yourself are showered, or when you observe a kindness during this week! God’s grace and lovingkindness are showered on us each day, so let’s pass it on!

My thoughts on kindness today turn to the news this morning that country music legend – Toby Keith – lost his battle with stomach cancer yesterday at the age of 62. I don’t know your personal thoughts about Toby, but both as an entertainer and as a person, I think he was a “larger than life Christian” whose emphasis on kindness and giving to his family and fellow man was huge. Described as being in the top five richest singers in the world with 32 #1 songs, Toby shared much of his success in the music industry with others. Of course, he had much more to share than we could ever dream of having, but we can give of what we have!

Toby’s patriotism and support for the U.S. military and veterans took him on many tours to entertain the troops throughout his career. Nearly 20 years ago, he established the Toby Keith Foundation where kids receive cost-free cancer treatment and accommodations for them and their parents at the “Kids Korral”, described as “the castle built by the friends they (the kids and families) never knew”. The foundation gets a four-star rating with 96% going toward its mission.

When he received the 2023 Country Icon Award last fall, Toby performed “Don’t Let the Old Man In”, a song he had written for his friend Clint Eastwood. The words of the song emphasize making the most of the time you have, which is just where he was in his personal struggle with cancer. In one of his final interviews, Toby thanked God for his ability to perform, for the unexpected blessings he has received because of his faith, and for the opportunity to be a messenger for what God could be in his life.

Toby had initially said that he didn’t want cancer to define him, and I think it can be said that it didn’t! He will be remembered by many for his kindness, his faith, and his good works!

Doing Whatever It Takes

Gary Nicolosi offers us a lesson on reaching out to new people.

In the United Methodist Church of Moore, Oklahoma (a part of metropolitan Oklahoma City), a young man in his late twenties by the name of Bill experienced a renewal of faith on a weekend retreat. When he returned to his church, Bill was determined to revitalize the Men’s Group by reaching out to the young men in the community. He discovered that a lot of young men in his community like to gather in the fall to watch Monday Night Football on television, but the only places providing that setting were bars. Bill wondered if the Men’s Group could bring a large screen television into the church’s fellowship hall on Monday nights and host unchurched men. He asked an acquaintance with long hair, a left earring, and a motorcycle if guys would be interested in watching Monday night football at their church. The fellow replied, “I would like to, and I could bring other guys.” When Bill proposed this Monday night agenda to the Men’s Group president, he heard the reply: “Sure, we could meet on Monday nights, but we like dominos more than football; invite them to come and play our game.”

Now, I’m not suggesting that all the men in our church start wearing jewelry in their ears. But I am asking whether you and I are willing to do whatever it takes to win people to Christ and his Church? Paul said, “To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I became all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.” This is to say that St. Paul understood that in order to minister to people in Christ’s name, we must meet them where they are, not where we are.

This means we can share anywhere there are people. You never know when you will be the vessel God uses to save a soul.

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

MMC WELCOMES CINDY KLAUSMAN

Cindy was born and raised in Columbia, SC. She attended USC, and yes, she does support the Gamecocks! She says she was “dragged” to PA, her husband’s home state. They lived in Altoona until they retired and moved here (seven years ago). . She is happy to be away from snow country!
Cindy enjoys gardening. Veggies and flowers are her favorites. However, the deer have deterred her some each year.

We are excited to have Cindy as part of our growing MMC family!

THANK YOU FROM JESSICA KIDD

Jessica sends a Big Thank You to her Church Family for your many, many remembrances of her on her Big 40th Birthday on January 17 – you made her feel very special indeed!

Her official birthday party was held this year at Pizza Hut in Greenwood – she, Bop and Sprinkles are shown in the photo above with her friends who joined her for this special celebration!

THANK YOU FROM NATIVE AMERICAN MINISTRIES

Dear McCormick Methodist Church (and Lola),

We would like to thank you and your church for the years of support by supplying goods and making Native American Elder Baskets! Many folks do not realize that Food Stamps can only be used for food. This leaves many struggling to obtain daily items needed, like personal hygiene items, or basic cleaning items. So the laundry baskets filled with paper products, dish soap, laundry detergent, shampoo, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and food were shared with grateful tribal recipients around the state. The average cost of a filled basket has risen to about $45. So, even just a few baskets adds up quickly. The baskets are such useful gifts and are greatly appreciated at a time of the year when added demands strain budgets.

So, thank you for your obedience to be servants for Jesus by ministering tangibly to those in need! Being a good steward while serving humbly shines the light of Jesus through your spirit, thus bringing relief and hope to those in need! All glory, honor, and praise to our Lord, our Savior, our Hope Eternal! Amen and A’ho!

Mark10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

1Peter 4:10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s Grace in its various forms.

Thank you for following Jesus’ example of being a servant by helping further Native American Ministries.

Love and Blessings,
Lee Ann Lamar & NAC

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Loaning Our Strength!

A big “thank you” goes out to our fellow church member who shares this week’s kindness story, as it reminded him of Pastor Nels’ sermon this past Sunday entitled “A Disciple’s Protective Instinct”. It also reminds me of Pastor Nels’ story about grace in last week’s Blast plus last week’s kindness entry about the strength of kindness–it does pull us all together!

Today, we’re sharing a story from reader Matthew S. in Arizona.

“When I was a little boy, my grandfather, who has since passed, had the biggest heart you could possibly imagine. We were walking on the sidewalk in San Francisco one morning, and he noticed a young man on the verge of tears standing there all alone … it turned out the man had just lost his mom to cancer and didn’t know where else to go and grieve. My grandfather obviously consoled him and ended up giving him a huge hug. It was the first time I had ever seen the kind of relief I saw on that poor guy’s face. I don’t think anyone had been there for him the whole time his mother was dying, and he obviously did not have anyone else.

There’s nothing like a few kind words and a hug from someone who cares that can transform the darkest moments into the most beautiful ones. Always remember that when you see someone having a tough day.

I think we’re living in a world full of more lonely people than ever before in history. I don’t have a solution for society, but sometimes the best thing you can do for someone is to just listen to them and let them let go of all that stuff they’ve been building in their heart for a long time.”

Our faith helps us to do that when we remember the words of Isaiah 40: 29 – “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”

Understanding Grace

Rev. Maxie Dunnam tells a wonderful story about understanding grace.

A fifteen-year-old girl went to a youth conference in Oklahoma. She was short and a bit overweight. She was not too attractive, and she had been crippled from birth. When a dance was held one night at the conference, she simply put her crutches by a chair nearby, sat down in another chair and spent the evening watching the others dance. All the time smiling, but who knows the pain that was going on inside.

My friend, Norman Neaves, who tells the story says, “The music was the kind that peals the skin off your face and overloads the auditory nerve, and the floor was full of teenagers moving with the rhythm.” Then a very special thing happened. In the middle of the dance program that evening, a slow number was played by the band, and a tall 16-year-old boy went over to this girl, held out his hand and said to her, “Please, would you dance with me?” She looked up with unbelieving surprise, and with a smile quivering on her face, she said, “Yes.” Together they began dancing. The young man held her tightly, and she held on to him tightly, lest she stumble and fall. It was a beautiful sight to behold.

“Later that evening, one of the leaders went to the young man and told him how special he thought it was for him to do this, and how much he admired him. And he said, “As the two of you were dancing, I noticed that she whispered something in your ear. Do you mind if I ask what it was?”

And the teenager said, “You’re not going to believe this, but she said that this was the first time that anyone had ever asked her to dance in her whole life.” (Norman Neaves, quoted by Donald Shelby, “Eureka”.

That’s a picture of grace. All grace.

Can you imagine how that young woman felt? Unattractive, crippled, never having been asked to dance. And then came Prince Charming and it happened. Can you imagine how she felt? If so, then you are beginning to understand grace.

See you in Church or online this Sunday where we can experience God’s grace!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Kindness Update – Kindness Fills Our Cups!

The Widows Connection’s Bible study is First Corinthians – Living Love When We Disagree by Melissa Spoelstra. For the fourth DVD session this week, “Beyond Ourselves”, the author/speaker used a teapot to illustrate God’s Love and how it flows through us to others.

She emphasized how God wants to fill us up! As He does so, the “steam” (as from the hot tea in the teapot) represents His Holy Spirit that causes us to want to pour that love out to others – it’s a continuous process! Now if that’s not a recipe for Kindness, I don’t know what is!

Of course, she used the analogy of “I’m A Little Teapot” to demonstrate her point very effectively. However, I was also reminded of the old hymn, “Fill My Cup, Lord” – “I lift it up, Lord … come and feed the thirsting of my soul! Bread of Heaven, feed me ‘til I want no more … Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole!” I didn’t look that up, but I think that’s the way the song goes!

God uses us as agents of His Love in a world that desperately needs it, and He wants our lives to be a pleasing aroma to Him and to others. May our cups overflow!

Kindness Entry: “I saw this on Face Book and thought I should pass it along: “Kindness is loaning your strength to others instead of reminding them of their weakness.”

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

MMC WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS

A warm family welcome to Jim and Karen Hicks! They have been livestreaming us since COVID, around four years. They attended the ALPHA classes and are now officially part of the family! They like to say they have “lived everywhere”, and many of us understand that!
Jim is into hiking, biking, bocce, and the outdoors. Karen likes to read, play Bunco and cards. They both enjoy camping and traveling. They have four children who live in 4 different states so most of their traveling is to visit them!

The church family is also excited to welcome Judi and Ron Bouchard, who just moved here last November! They used to spend the winters in Florida, and the rest of the time in North Carolina. We are happy they are now half-way between the two!

Ron was a hospital administrator at the University of Virginia teaching hospital before retiring. Judi worked in human resources in several state universities. Ron is an avid golfer, and Judi describes herself as a gym rat! They both love to travel and are voracious readers.

We are excited to be growing, especially with four super-friendly folks! Welcome to Judi, Ron, Jim and Karen!

2024 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

It’s a New Beginning.. time to share your talents! You do not to be a member, just have the time and willingness to help! Read below and sign up for as many as you feel you can do! MMC is fortunate to be able to keep contributing to the works of God in so many ways.

SIGN UP TO USHER TODAY!
We need singles, couples, and pairs to sign up to usher! Once we have the names, I will send out a calendar and we will work together to cover all the Sundays. We will need subs as well.

With the creation of the Security team, you will not be responsible for locking the fellowship door or the side doors. They take care of monitoring the cameras, as well.

You will be asked to lock the door by the stairs and the front door to the church. You will need to greet everyone, count the folks in attendance, and light/extinguish the altar candles. You might be asked to do Communion. We are in the process of rewriting the duties of the ushers and will help those who are new to ushering to “learn the ropes”.

Contact Barb Shelly to sign-up.

How Do You Know You Are Called?

How do we know we are called? How do we know to what we are called? An age-old question to which a wise minister and author has given us an answer worth pondering. Frederick Buechner, in his book, “Wishful Thinking,” says it well. He says that a good rule for finding one’s vocation is this: Our special mission in our life is usually

A. That which we’d love most to do and
B. It is work that the world most needs to have done.

Buechner says that if we really get a kick out of our work, we have probably met requirement A, but if that work is writing TV deodorant commercials, chances are we haven’t met requirement B. If our work is being a doctor in a leper colony, we probably have met requirement B, but if most of the time we are bored and depressed by doctoring, the chances are we have not only bypassed A, we probably aren’t helping our patients much, either.

Buechner concludes: “The place God calls us to, is the place where our deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

When we think of the world’s deep hunger, we think that all God’s callings will always require a radical life change. Many callings do just that. But what if we substituted McCormick Community for the world. This would mean Item B would read, “It is work that the McCormick community most needs to have done”. As Methodists, we believe that all are called to be ministers. Have you heard God call your name to make a difference?

See You in Church or online this Sunday!

Kindness Update – Amazing Grace!

Pastor Nels’ challenge to us this past Sunday to be faithful – not fearful – and trust God as we begin a new year together in ministry at McCormick Methodist Church made me think this might be a good time for some “grace bombing” to strengthen our faith! This concept was mentioned previously in the Kindness Update after Lindy Stahlman graciously gave me a book on the subject – it goes like this:

In his book, Grace Bomb – The Surprising Impact of Loving Your Neighbors, Patrick Linnell founder of Grace Bomb and a teaching pastor at Columbia International University, writes “when God’s grace falls on you out of the clear blue sky, it’s unmistakable. Man-made bombs have a similar, unsettled impact with dramatic change for the worse. But when God drops a Grace Bomb, He disrupts life to restore it … He takes what is meant for evil and uses it for good … most notably, the cross on which Jesus died was a despised tool of war and national conquest, and God used it to bring about the greatest good the world has ever seen.”

Linnell sums it up this way, “So I thought, if God grace bombs people, maybe we who have received His grace should grace bomb people, too! Grace Bombing could help us point people (and ourselves) to the source of kindness itself.” Then we could strengthen one another’s faith as together we experience God’s Amazing Grace!

So, Random Acts of Kindness Week is in mid-February, and that just might be a good time to do some “grace bombing! So, stay tuned!

Kindness Entries: A special thanks goes out to Barb Shelley for covering last week’s Kindness Update with a very thought-provoking quote on kindness!

I figure that the anonymous kind person who left a beautiful red poinsettia on my front porch during the Christmas Season also follows this kindness blog, so if I am right, then I just want to say “Thank you for your kindness that made my day! I hope you had a very blessed Christmas!”

FLOWER CALENDAR ACROSS FROM OFFICE
When you sign up on the calendar across from the church office, you are responsible for the flowers for that Sunday. You are welcome to bring in your own plant or arrangement from home, or you can arrange with one of the florists listed below. They will bring the arrangement for you and set it up on the pedestal in the sanctuary on Saturday night. You can take the flowers home after the service or perhaps you’d like to take it to someone who needs some cheering up!

Patsy will call or email you prior to your date to get the information you want in the bulletin. The arrangement might be in celebration of an event or in memory of a loved one(s).

Thank you for helping to make our services “huge”!

MMC PRAYER GROUP
LOOKING FOR MEMBERS
Anyone who has desire to pray for the needs of our church family, community, our country or world is welcome to be part of this group. We will have access to prayer concerns shared in church or in the news.

There will be times we will gather as a group and pray together. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact Patty Kriger.

2024 LAY READERS
February through December needed! Sign up is across from the office, next to the Flower Sign up or call/email Lindy Stahlman.

You will be sent the scripture and order of worship earlier in the week to allow you to read it through. If you can sub or only do a few weeks one month, let Lindy know, she will work your schedule!

SUNDAY COFFEE HOUR
SIGN-UP SHEET IN FELLOWSHIP HALL
Thank you for signing up to set up, clean up, and bring a COUPLE treats to enjoy with coffee and tea after church service. We’d like to keep it simple, just a couple treats to enjoy with coffee, tea, and fellowship after the church service. We are trying to avoid leftover food being put in the refrigerator and eventually thrown out.

We are asking for two hosts, just sign up and someone will sign up with you, or ask someone to sign up with you!

Please call Marge Radosevich or Lindy Stahlman if you have questions or need some help! There is now a fund to help with purchase of treats. Thanks in advance for your help this year!

DINNERS FOR EIGHT
It is time to advertise dinners for eight again. Three groups of eight just wrapped up a fun season of building new friendships and sharing lots of laughs.

Sign up for the next round will be in the fellowship hall starting Sunday 1/14, and runs February through May.

For newcomers to MMC, this is a wonderful way to get to know folks and it is so easy….just dinner once a month at someone’s home. Each pair hosts one month by providing the main course and beverages, and the other 3 pairs bring the appetizer, salad and dessert. So, pair up with someone and sign up now through Sunday 1/28.

On the 28th, Julianne Coleman will coordinate with the groups to get the round of dinners started in February.
Contact Julianne to sign up or ask questions.

Take Time in this New Year
Martin Greyford Phiri, a natural born citizen of Zambia, wrote:

Take time to think;
it is the source of power.

Take time to read;
it is the foundation of wisdom.

Take time to play;
it is the secret of staying young.

Take time to be quiet;
it is the opportunity to seek God.

Take time to be aware;
it is the opportunity to help others.

Take time to love and be loved;
it is God’s greatest gift.

Take time to laugh;
it is the music of the soul.

Take time to be friendly;
it is the road to happiness.

Take time to dream;
it is what the future is made of.

Take time to pray;
it is the greatest power on earth.

Wishing You all the Best in 2024!

See you in Church or online this Sunday where we will take time to listen to God.

‘First’ Tuesday

Stephen Ministry Corner

Good Morning America had a segment about Bruce Willis recently. As you may know, Bruce Willis is suffering from a form of dementia … frontotemporal dementia. In the segment, his wife talked about how difficult it is to be a caregiver of someone with this illness. She stated it was very tough … and her advice was to seek help. She said something like, ‘It’s really important to have someone you can trust with your feelings.’

Wow … made me think of how important a Stephen Minister can be to a person. Sharing your feelings can be TOUGH!! But if you have someone with whom you can share feelings with total confidentiality … it can lighten your load. You are sharing your burden.

Stephen Ministers never divulge who their Care Receiver is or what their issue is. If the Care Receiver wants to share this information with anyone, that is their right. But the information will never be shared by the Stephen Minister.

Stephen Ministry is ‘’Christ Caring for people through people.” We are here to listen and be someone you can trust with your feelings.

Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders and begin a ‘fellowship’ with a Stephen Minister. We may be reached through the church office at (864)852-2394.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Update – Happy New Year!

During Christmas, I hope we all have had our hearts filled with enough Love from Jesus to carry us into 2024 and beyond! It may be part of the aging process, but I find myself not giving much thought these days to making New Year resolutions, but rather, spending time looking back at the blessings of 2023 and praying for the Holy Spirit’s direction for this year that I might have, in the words of Charles Dickens, “a new heart for a New Year, always!”

Many years ago, my boss – a great Christian lady and friend – gave me a plaque with the following inscription: “If you planted hope today in any hopeless heart, If someone’s burden was lighter because you did your part, If you caused a laugh that chased a tear away, If tonight your name is mentioned when someone kneels to pray, Then your day was well spent.” I have kept it at eye level in my kitchen since that time and learned that these kind words to live by came from a Christian blog site, Katherines Corner by Reverend Katherine.

In closing, I’d like to share with you a kindness treasure I saw on television during the holidays. It is a 60 second TV commercial from The Foundation for a Better Life, and it certainly defines kindness in the simplest terms and reminds us that it begins with each of us. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and may Kindness be our word for 2024! Click below and enjoy!

Kindness Entry: At the checkout counter a few days after Christmas, I was surprised at the response of the young female clerk – just a teenager – when I asked if she had a good Christmas. Her reply was “No, I didn’t”. This caught me by surprise, and I said, “I’m sorry”, to which her response was, “You don’t have to be sorry – it wasn’t your fault!” I do not know anything about the circumstances of this young lady, but this experience served as a reminder to me of the great need we have for kindness in our world – a simple silent prayer when we encounter situations like this could make a big difference to someone who is hurting!
