Distract the Christians!

Ray Osborne writes a great article about how we can be distracted away from God and our Church. Enjoy!

All too often we miss what God is doing because we are either too busy doing something else or we have a better idea of what God would do. Someone sent me the following in an email this week:

Satan called a worldwide convention. In his opening address to his evil angels, he said:

“We can’t keep the Christians from going to church. We can’t keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth. We can’t even keep them from forming an intimate, abiding relationship experience in Christ. If they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken. So let them go to church, let them have their conservative lifestyles, but steal their time, so they can’t gain that experience in Jesus Christ. This is what I want you to do, angels. Distract them from gaining hold of their Savior and maintaining that vital connection throughout their day!”

“How shall we do this?” shouted his angels. “Keep them busy in the nonessentials of life and invent innumerable schemes to occupy their minds, “he answered. “Tempt them to spend, spend, spend, and borrow, borrow, borrow. Persuade them to work for long hours, to work 6 – 7 days a week, 10 – 12 hours a day, so they can afford their lifestyles. Keep them from spending time with their children. As their family fragments, soon, their home will offer no escape from the pressures of work.”

“Over stimulate their minds so that they cannot hear that still small voice. Entice them to play the radio or cassette player whenever they drive. To keep the TV, iPads, CDs and their computers going constantly in their homes. And see to it that every store and restaurant in the world plays non-biblical music constantly. This will jam their minds and break that union with Christ.”

“Fill the coffee table with magazines and newspapers. Pound their minds with the news 24 hours a day. Invade their driving moments with billboards.

Flood their mailboxes with junk mail, sweepstakes, mail order catalogues, and every kind of newsletter and promotional offering free products, services, and false hopes.”

“Even in their recreation, let them be excessive. Have them return from their recreation exhausted, disquieted, and unprepared for the coming week.

Don’t let them go out in nature to reflect on God’s wonders. Send them to amusement parks, sporting events, concerts and movies instead.”

And when they meet for spiritual fellowship, involve them in gossip and small talk so that they leave with troubled consciences and unsettled emotion.”

“Let them be involved in soul-winning. But crowd their lives with so many good causes they have no time to seek power from Christ. Soon they will be working in their own strength, sacrificing their health and family for the good of the cause.”

It was quite a convention in the end. And the evil angels went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get busy, busy, busy and rush here and there.

Has the devil been successful at his scheme? You be the JUDGE.

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

ACTS OF KINDNESS

Kindness Update – We Are All Special In God’s Eyes!

Some years ago, Bob Linsenmayer, SLV resident, worshiped with us – an accomplished folk singer, he brought his guitar and sang a beautiful song recorded by Mark Wills entitled “Don’t Laugh at Me” That song became one of my favorites! I am reminded of it especially at this time of year because March is Disability Awareness Month when we raise awareness about the supports and rights of people with disabilities and celebrate their contributions to our communities. I would like to share it with you:

I’m a little boy with glasses, the one they call the geek,
A little girl who never smiles ’cause I’ve got braces on my teeth,
And I know how it feels to cry myself to sleep.
I’m that kid on every playground who’s always chosen last,
A single teenage mother tryin’ to overcome my past.
You don’t have to be my friend – Is it too much to ask?
Don’t laugh at me, don’t call me names, don’t get your pleasure from my pain
‘Cause in God’s eyes we’re all the same – someday we’ll all have perfect wings.
Don’t laugh at me.

I’m the cripple on the corner – you pass me on the street,
And I wouldn’t be out here beggin’ if I had enough to eat,
And don’t think I don’t notice that our eyes never meet.
I lost my wife and little boy when someone crossed that yellow line.
The day we laid ’em in the ground is the day I lost my mind.
Right now I’m down to holdin’ this little cardboard sign.
So don’t laugh at me, don’t call me names, don’t get your pleasure from my pain
‘Cause in God’s eyes we’re all the same – someday we’ll all have perfect wings.
Don’t laugh at me.

‘Cause I’m fat, I’m thin, I’m short, I’m tall, I’m deaf, I’m blind, hey, aren’t we all?
Don’t laugh at me, don’t call me names, don’t get your pleasure from my pain
‘Cause in God’s eyes we’re all the same – someday we’ll all have perfect wings
Don’t laugh at me.

As the song says, “in God’s eyes we’re all the same”! If you would like to listen to this beautiful song, check out the youtube video at:

We find kindness shown just when it was needed in this week’s kindness entry:  I had a little car trouble in a Greenwood parking lot the other day, and a kind young man named Jamar took the time to look under my vehicle and put me at east that it was a minor issue that there should be no problem with driving home, and that it could be taken care of by a local mechanic in my hometown. When I thanked him, I also told him I would say a prayer for him and he smiled and said, “Please do!”

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

1) Be a blessing to others by sharing your Act of Kindness (no names please) on our website, or use this link! Then check back each week to learn how others are passing on acts of kindness! The link is https://www.mccormickmc.org/acts-of-kindness

2) There is a Kindness box in the library on the window sill, along with paper and pencil. Share your God-Wink, perhaps someone else will be inspired!

UMCOR SUNDAY
MARCH 26

For more than 50 years, Methodist congregations have supported UMCOR Sunday. MUMC will celebrate UMCOR Sunday on March 26.

UMCOR Sunday, March 26, is one of our church-wide special Mission Sundays which calls us to share our goodness of life with those who are in need. Your gifts lay the foundation to share God’s love with communities everywhere. This special offering underwrites “costs of doing business.” and helps them keep the promise that 100 percent of any gift to a specific disaster through the year will go toward that project, not administrative costs.

There will be a collection at church on March 19. You can donate from home starting today by check or online.  If paying by check, please make payable to MUMC and note UMCOR on the subject line. You can drop it in the collection plate, bring it by the office or mail it to the church at MUMC Box 267 McCormick SC 29835. Here is a direct link to the UMCOR tile on VANCO.

Please give generously and pray about following our Lord’s words from 1 John 3:18 “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but indeed and in truth.”

A Mercedes-Benz TV commercial shows one of their cars colliding with a concrete wall during a safety test. Someone then asks a Mercedes engineer why their company does not enforce their patent on their car’s energy-absorbing car body. The Mercedes’ design has been copied by almost every other car maker in the world in spite of the fact that they have an exclusive patent.

The engineer replies in a clipped German accent, “Because in life, some things are just too important not to share.”

Wow! What a great statement. Some things are just too important not to share. As Christians we believe that the good news of Jesus Christ is one of those things that is too important not to share. No, that is an understatement. We believe that Jesus Christ MUST be shared with our friends, our neighbors, the world. The work of sharing the news of Jesus Christ we call evangelism. The Christian faith has been advanced through the ages by people who were willing to take upon themselves the responsibility of being evangelists – those who spread the good news of Christ.

So folks, how many have you told about Jesus lately? Who are you bringing to Church this Sunday?

See you and your special guest this Sunday or online.

Nels

First Tuesday
Stephen Ministry Corner
March 2023

The Stephen Ministry motto is “Christ caring for people through people.” Our Stephen Ministry is about to add one more caring leader, as Rich Jackson is about to complete Stephen Leader training.

What do Stephen Leaders do, exactly? Stephen Leaders are pastors and lay leaders who work together as a team to lead Stephen Ministry. They come from all ages and backgrounds, but they all share a common passion—bringing Christ’s love and care to hurting people. At this point we have 2 Stephen Minsters who have gone thru the extended training necessary to become a Stephen Leader. They are Beverly Western and Sundee Luedecke.

Soon, in addition, we will have 1 more Stephen Leader! Rich Jackson has been studying to become a Stephen Leader thru the Bridge Leader’s Training Course … a live, interactive online training experience that will prepare Rich to serve as a Stephen Leader. The course consists of 10 interactive online sessions of 2½ hours each to equip him with the knowledge, skills, and tools to help lead Stephen Ministry here at McCormick United Methodist Church.

We will officially commission Rich as a Stephen Leader on Sunday, March 19th, during our worship service. A welcoming reception for Rich will be held during the regular post-service hospitality hour in the Fellowship Hall.

Stephen Ministers are here to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties. We look forward to having Rich join us and help us enrich this ministry.

Stephen Ministers are here for you. If you are experiencing a difficulty and would like to start a ‘fellowship’ with a Stephen Minister, start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders thru the church office at (864) 852-2394.

ACTS OF KINDNESS

Kindness Update – Panama Style!

What a special blessing for us to receive a couple of wonderful kindness stories from Sue and Mitch Mitchell, “our own” missionaries to Panama! The first one is about the young lady above who not only has “kindness” on her shirt, but on her smiling face as well! The second story is about a young man who chooses to share Jesus and His loving kindness with children. Both will make your heart smile!

“This beautiful 9-year-old child in the kindness shirt is from Boquete, Panama. Lucia climbs trees and plays ball with her brother so it is no surprise that PE is her favorite subject in school. She lives with her older brother, mother, uncle, grandmother, and grandfather. The members of this family overflow with kindness. Whenever we visit, Lucia and her brother run to the car with smiles, hugs, and greetings using our names. Her mother has translated for us, her uncle has worked on our car, her grandmother has cooked fantastic meals for us and her grandfather has helped us over and over to navigate life in business and in our mission work in Panama. We feel blessed and loved!”

“On Friday we met a young man who wanted to meet missionaries who work with children. Yesterday we took him to the coffee farm church. Levi, the young man, gave us his testimony. He is from the indigenous people here and left an abusive home. He wants to provide a coloring book to teach children there is a Christian Way out. It is a powerful story. He fits in our verse, “He replied, Blessed rather are those who hear the Word of God and obey it.” Luke 11:28

Thank you, Sue and Mitch, for sharing your ministry with us! The people of Panama are certainly blessed by your kindness to them! You continue to be in our prayers!

God Knows What We Need

Charles Shultz, creator and author of the Peanuts cartoon characters often conveys a Christian message in his comic strips. In one strip he conveys through Charlie Brown the need we have to be loved and through Lucy our inability to love one another.

Charlie Brown and Lucy are leaning over the proverbial fence speaking to one another:

CB: All it would take to make me happy is to have someone say he likes me.

Lucy: Are you sure?

CB: Of course I’m sure!

Lucy: You mean you’d be happy if someone merely said he or she likes you? Do you mean to tell me that someone has it within his or her power to make you happy merely by doing such a simple thing?

CB: Yes! That’s exactly what I mean!

Lucy: Well, I don’t think that’s asking too much. I really don’t. [Now standing face to face, Lucy asks one more time] But you’re sure now? All you want is to have someone say, “I like you, Charlie Brown,” and then you’ll be happy?

CB: And then I’ll be happy!

Lucy: [Lucy turns and walks away saying] I can’t do it!

What Lucy can not do, sinful as she is, God does. What Charlie Brown needs, lost and alone as he is, God supplies. God loves you and is telling you today, “He loves you!” “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.”

To love and to be loved is one of the greatest human needs. How great it is to know that God loves us.

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Nels

ACTS OF KINDNESS

Kindness Update – The Kindness of The Cross!

The loving kindness of Jesus is probably felt in our hearts most strongly during the Season of Lent. As we go through the Season’s spiritual disciplines of repentance, fasting, reflection, and, finally, celebration, we experience healing and the great depth of God’s Love for us through the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.

Our Lenten Journey ultimately takes us to the Cross, the symbol of God’s supreme act of kindness. I found a song by Travis Cottrell – The Kindness of the Cross – and the words describe so powerfully what this special season of our Christian year is all about.

Travis is an American contemporary Christian music artist, songwriter, author, and worship leader. He was raised “a Carolina boy” in Boone, NC and currently serves as Worship Pastor at Englewood Baptist Church in Jackson, Tennessee. He and his wife of 22 years have three children.

It is said that The Kindness of the Cross strives to glorify Jesus above all, and lead the worshipper into a life-changing encounter with God”. As you listen to it, I think you will agree it does that! To hear Travis and a room filled with young people sing this inspirational song, click on the following link and enjoy:

This week’s kindness entry shows us just how great kindness can be when shared with others: The other day I was standing in the grocery store looking at a young woman ahead of me in line. She had a few items including a bag of Hershey “hugs”. She stepped up to the cashier and paid for her items. Then immediately she ripped open the candy and offered the cashier one. To my surprise she turned around and offered me one. That sweet kindness made my day. (This entry traveled a great distance to get to us!)

Our worship committee has arranged to have Easter lilies in the sanctuary. The cost is $8.00 for a lily in a 6 inch pot.

If you would like to order lilies in honor of, or in memory of loved ones, there will be a form in the bulletin on Sunday.  Or you may print a form.  You are welcome to send (or bring by) your order to the office. Church address is P.O. Box 267, McCormick SC 29835.

Checks payable to MUMC and note Easter Lilies on the memo line.
