Happenings – August 25, 2023

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Only One Plan

It has been pointed out that the Church is always one generation from extinction. If we don’t spread the Gospel, it will be just one generation away from disappearing from the face of the earth. It’s a compelling idea, isn’t it? It enhances our sense of Christian responsibility. We need to get out there and work for the Gospel or the Church could fade into history.

Perhaps you have heard the old story about Jesus appearing in heaven just after his resurrection. Jesus is giving a progress report on all that has happened while he was on earth. Moses is there and he asks him, “Well Jesus, did you leave things in capable hands?”

Jesus responds, “I did. I have left behind Mary and Martha and Peter and the other disciples.”

Moses said, “What if they fail?”

Jesus said, “Well, I have established the Church and filled it with the Holy Spirit and they will carry on.”

And Moses said, “What if they fail? What is Plan B?”
Jesus replied, “I have no other plan.”

There’s a great tension there. God is at work here in our church but we’ve been given the keys of the Kingdom. We have work to do and Christ calls us to it. The prophet Micah put it this way: “do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with thy God.”

May we pray to keep the Main Thing in making disciples our Main Thing!

See You in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Preparing for Worship

Sunday, August 27 – 10AM

Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost
Scripture Lesson:  Matthew 16: 13-20
Message:  “Who Do You Say…?”

THANK YOU TO LINDY, RICH, WENDY AND PEGGY

MMC is very fortunate to have folks who can (and are willing) to fill in for Nels, so he can be with his family when needed. If you missed the service this morning, be sure to go to the archives and watch it!

Many thanks to Wendy Kvale for keeping us organized and leading us in prayer, Lindy Stahlman for working with Peggy Thomas to lead us in seven hymns in a row (such fun!). And to Rich Jackson, who shared his encouraging testimony with us.

It was quite a morning, and we all left feeling the presence of God’s love!

SUPPORT FOR MAUI

MMC Missions team will be announcing on Sunday that they will be collecting donations to be sent to UMCOR for the people of fire ravaged Maui.

Wind-driven wildfires on Maui prompted evacuations and caused significant loss of life and widespread damage.
UMCOR awarded an emergency grant to the California-Pacific Annual Conference, which includes the Hawaiian UMC, to provide shelf-stable food, water, hygiene items and tools to help survivors recover belongings.

As first responders continue to provide initial aid, please join UMCOR in prayer and by making a gift to this and other disasters in the U.S.

Here are the ways you can contribute:

CHECK If using a check, please make out to MMC and write Maui on the subject line. You can bring by to the office, put it in the collection plate, or send to the office (MMC P.O. Box 267, McCormick SC 29835).

CASH Every penny is appreciated! If you clean out your change bowls, bring it in to church! No amount is too small!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness – is Bearing Each Other’s Burdens!

One of the best outcomes from having this weekly “kindness blog” in the Blast is that we become people who are looking for the goodness we see around us and we want to share that goodness with one another, creating that “ripple effect”. When this happens again and again, my heart fills with gratitude for Toni Graham, Church Council Chair, and this idea she had several years ago!

This week’s kindness link is shared with us by Connie Tremsky, and it tells of the effect of a random act of kindness that was shown to a caregiver whose husband is battling a debilitating disease. That caregiver is Emma Heming Willis, wife of Bruce Willis, very successful actor who has appeared in more than a hundred films, but whose popular quote (as father of five daughters) is, “I’m much more proud of being a father than being an actor.”

Thanks for sharing this, Connie! We are reminded of the words of Paul in Galatians 6: 2: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” We all have burdens to carry – our burdens vary – but, as we see in this video, sharing the Love of Jesus with each other can really make a difference in someone’s life!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

1) Be a blessing to others by sharing your Act of Kindness (no names please) on our website, or use this link! Then check back each week to learn how others are passing on acts of kindness! The link is https://www.mccormickmc.org/acts-of-kindness

2) There is a Kindness box in the library on the window sill, along with paper and pencil. Share your God-Wink, perhaps someone else will be inspired!

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAY 10AM

Online Giving

Quick-Step Guide (PDF) for setting up your account and making your first donation.

Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Lord, Give Me a Sign!

One of the very first things we always ask for in the midst of uncertainty, disaster or trouble is: “Lord, show us a sign.” In the movie Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey, there’s a scene where Bruce’s life has fallen apart. He’s gotten fired, beat up when he tried to help a homeless man holding a sign, and he’s had a fight with his girlfriend whose name just happens to be Grace. He’s driving along feeling sorry for himself, talking to and yelling at God.

“OK, God. You want me to talk to you? Then talk back. Tell me what’s going on. What should I do? Give me a signal.” Just then he passes a lighted traffic message sign which is blinking the words: “Caution Ahead.”

He ignores it and continues his rant. “I need your guidance Lord, please. Send me a sign.” About that time a truck full of traffic signs pulls out in front of him. Very visible are the signs: “Dead End, Stop, Wrong Way, Yield, No Crossing and Do Not Enter.” But Bruce ignores them, he doesn’t see what he’s asking for, complains about the truck and whips around it only to eventually run into a light pole. He gets out and yells at God. At the end of the scene he hollers: “Answer me.” And just then his pager goes off with a telephone number. Bruce says: “Sorry, don’t know you. Wouldn’t call you if I did”.

I think Jim Carrey nailed how we feel in the middle of a crisis, in the middle of despair. And he also captured exactly what happens. We ask for a sign and we’re so blinded by what’s going on in our lives that we can’t see the signs for the fog of our emotions.

Often, the nature of God’s signs are not thunder, lightning and earthquakes. The signs occur in the touch of a loving hand, a word of encouragement or even in the affection of a family pet. God has signs for us everywhere. As we grow spiritually, we must learn to hear when God speaks softly, to feel when someone’s loving hand is the hand of God, to listen when someone speaks a God-inspired word to us, to see when his obvious light is there upon our lives and even tastes when we receive Holy Communion. God never abandons us!

See you in Church or online this Sunday so you can see more signs of God’s love and grace!

Your Pastor,
Nels

First Tuesday

Stephen Ministry Corner

August 2023

There’s a line in the song, “I Hope You Dance,” that goes … ‘Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens …’ Certainly a heartfelt hope … and yet sometimes we cannot see that ‘new door’ even when we think we are looking!

I think it struck a chord with me because as Stephen Ministers it is part of our calling to listen to others as they deal with that door that has closed and try to help them find that ‘new door.’ We do so by listening and allowing the Holy Spirit to work it’s wonder and help someone we care for see and feel God’s Hope and Peace … and maybe ‘open a new door.’

If a door has ‘closed’ for you and you are wanting to share your angst and fears … please consider being in a relationship with a Stephen Minister. Start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders thru the church office at (864) 852-2394.

CREIGHTON SCHOLARSHIPS

Asya Milton, Jeremiah Fambrough and Jalen Salliewhite are our 2023 scholarship recipients. They will share with us their plans on Sunday during the service, and I’m sure will look forward to hearing all of the wisdom our church family has to share during fellowship hour. Well done, students! Our prayers go with you as you begin this college year!

BOB AND BETTY WEISS

Congratulations to Bob and Betty Weiss, celebrating their twenty-second anniversary! It is extra special because you two were married right here in McCormick Methodist Church!

GOOD JOB, JAYDEN!

WELCOME TO DOMINIC!

We have enjoyed getting to know Jayden this summer! He did a great job serving as an acolyte by lighting the altar candles for us. This morning, we learned that Jayden will be going back home, but not before he led the church family in singing his grandpa a Happy Birthday! His proud grandparents are Tom and Tammy Batson.

Before Jayden left today, he passed his acolyte duty on to Dominic, grandson of Carol and Fred Fuller! We are sure he will do a great job, as well, and we look forward to getting to know him better!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness – Is Saving the Last Dance!

You may be wondering what kindness has to do with dancing. I did too until I read the following story from a Life of a Song article written by Charles Morris in January 2022. The song Morris wrote about is “Save the Last Dance for Me” that was first recorded in 1960 by The Drifters. No doubt, many of us have spent a good bit of time on the dance floor to that one! Ironically, however, Morris’ story reveals that the man who wrote the words to this song did not.

Doc Pomus contracted polio as a child and was eventually confined to a wheelchair in mid-life. Pomus, who was born Jerome Felder in New York in 1925, was a larger-than-life character. He refused to be restricted by others’ perception of his disability, pursuing as a young man the attentions of attractive women and a career as a blues singer.

“Save the Last Dance for Me” was inspired by Pomus’ wedding to the actress Willi Burke in 1957. At the reception, he sat and watched his beautiful bride dance with other men. But when it was time for the last dance of the evening, Pomus would go out in his wheelchair and dance the last dance with his wife.

I hope that you might be as touched by this true story as I was – knowing its origin gives new meaning to the words of the song that I have memorized for many, many years now – “But don’t forget whose taking you home and in whose arms you’re gonna be – so, darlin’, save the last dance for me!”

Before the Drifters’ recording, Ben E. King was told the origin of the song by his Atlantic Records boss, and moved by the story, King added an emotional edge to his performance. The result was a US number one and number two in the UK! Ben E. King’s performance was unsurpassed in capturing the song’s heart! The lovingkindness in the heart of the song’s writer today lives on in all of our hearts forever!

Well, ok Hickory Knob isn’t in the wilderness, it’s just across the street, but how many of us take the time to relax and just enjoy ourselves with our Christian sisters? Thinking it would be fun to re-group and get to know one another…let the fun begin!!

The retreat (details forthcoming in another BLAST) will be Friday night August 4th and Saturday August 5th. The rooms are for one night only and are double occupancy, so grab a roomy or just sign up and be surprised!

Thank you for giving to McCormick Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

The Ivy Lee Method

Ivy Lee (1877–1934) was an American publicity expert and worked as a consultant for a number of businesses. One of those was for Charles Schwab, who was then president of Bethlehem Steel. Schwab was obsessed with efficiency and wanted Bethlehem Steel to become more productive. Ivy Lee was brought in.

Schwab asked: “Show me a way to get more things done.”

Lee: “Give me 15 minutes with each of your executives”
Schwab: “How much will it cost me?”

Lee: “Nothing. Unless it works. After three months, you can send me a check for whatever you feel it’s worth to you.”

Schwab agreed and during those 15 minutes with each executive, Lee laid out the following five step method:

  1. At the end of each working day, write down the five most important things you need to accomplish tomorrow. Do not write down more than five tasks.
  2. Prioritize those items in order of their true importance.
  3. When you arrive tomorrow, concentrate only on the first task. Work until the first task is finished before moving on to the second task.
  4. Approach the rest of your list in the same way. Don’t worry if you’ve only finished one or two by the end of the day; the others can wait.
  5. Repeat this process every working day.

It’s simple right? Well, Schwab and his team starting using this method. It worked well, very well. After a couple months of outstanding production from his staff Schwab sent a $25,000 check to Lee. Adjusted for inflation that’s $400,000 today!

Today this simple approach is called the The Ivy Lee Method. It’s a million dollar productivity approach for a lot of companies. If we were to apply the Ivy Lee Method to our Christianity what would it look like? I think all of us would agree that Love God and Love your neighbor would be on the list as would the Great Commission. What would come after that?

Each of us has a calling and purpose to serve Christ and His Church. I urge you to prayerfully make your list of priorities and give the Ivy Lee Method and God a try.
Trust in God; pursue what is Good, and don’t worry about tomorrow. You will be surprised at how much you can accomplish for the Lord. And….the beauty of this is your needs will be met because you are abiding in the Spirit of the Lord.

See you and your priorities in Church or online this Sunday!

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness – Is A Praying Church!

Several Sundays ago, during Morning Worship, I requested prayer from our Church Family for my younger brother Bailey that he might find an apartment in Greenwood. Because he lives in Mt. Pleasant, SC, I had been searching for housing for him for a month. With a move out date by August 8 in his present residence, we were running against a pretty tight schedule!

With all of your prayers, it turns out that was a deadline that God could meet (of course!)! My search led me to an apartment complex called Winter Ridge located at 102 Winter Way in Greenwood. When I drove up to the office and saw the sign above, “Be Kind”, I had the strongest feeling that our prayers were going to be answered! After spending about an hour with Kimberly (left) and Ashlee (right), I learned that Bailey might be able to be in his new home between August 11 and the 18th! Thank you, Jesus!

On Bailey’s behalf and mine, too, I hope all of you know how much I appreciate your caring and concern. It certainly means a lot to me to know I am among such kind, strong prayer warriors! And, as a special bonus, I met two wonderful new friends – Kimberly and Ashlee! Their team is amazing and they deserve all the kindness and patience their customers can give them!

There have been many beautiful visions of kindness that resulted from our Covid pandemic, and this week’s kindness entry features a good example: While talking with a friend recently about how our daughters are frequent shoppers online through Amazon these days, yet another by-product of the pandemic, she shared a beautiful act of kindness that her daughter does. Realizing how busy these delivery drivers are and have been for several years now, her daughter has chilled bottles of water and snacks at the point of delivery outside her home so the drivers can help themselves and be refreshed! I think I’ll pass this thought on to my daughter!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

I found this article a few days ago. I do not know the author but would wanted to share it with you.

Our Need For Prayer And Communion With God

Back in the thirteenth century, the German king, Frederick II, conducted a diabolical experiment intended to discover what language children would naturally grow up to speak if never spoken to.

He thought it would be German. Some things are just obvious, right? So King Frederick took babies from their mothers at birth and placed them in the care of nurses who were forbidden to speak in their hearing. But a second rule was imposed, as well: the nurses were not allowed to touch the infants. To his great dismay, Frederick’s experiment was cut short, but not before something tragically significant regarding human nature was revealed. As you may have guessed, the babies grew up to speak no language at all because they died.

In the year 1248, an Italian historian named Salimbene di Adam recorded, with an air of scientific observation, “They could not live without petting.” The babies literally died for want of touch.

Astounding!

Modern medicine calls this phenomenon, “failure to thrive.” What you and I know is that the first language of our humanity is not a language; it’s not even touch. Our first langauge is love. For some reason, we humans flourish under the influence of love and we gradually die without it. The implications of this fact are huge.

Consider the research of Dr. Dean Ornish, the founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in California. In his national best seller, Love and Survival, Ornish presents study after study demonstrating that love is a chief influence for mental, emotional, and even physical health. He summarizes the unexpected message of the rapidly accumulating body of data: “Anything that promotes feelings of love and intimacy is healing; anything that promotes isolation, separation, loneliness, loss, hostility, anger, cynicism, depression, alienation, and related feelings often leads to suffering, disease, and premature death from all causes” (Dean Ornish, Love and Survival, p. 29).

We are literally engineered for love. We are made for love, as if our DNA contains the message, “You must love and be loved in order to survive.” But why? Why love. Science says that’s a mystery. For them the “mystery remains. No one can fully explain, why love and intimacy matter so much.”

Let me let you in on a little secret. We know why. We know that we are made in the image of God. And if God is love, so are we.

See you in Church or online this Sunday,
Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness – Like the Ocean, It Restores Our Souls!

We are at the peak of summer, and Kindness takes to the beach this week with this story that is kindly shared with us by Emilee Groh – it helps us to understand why time at the shore is so good for our souls! It’s just like our Heavenly Father to do something kind like that for us, isn’t it?

“Many years ago, scientist and skeptic Robert Faid set out to prove through science that God and the Bible events were not true. Through his exhaustive research, instead he found out it was all true, could be verified by science and he wrote a book documenting his discoveries.

When I was in the Greenville/Taylors (SC) area, our Sunday School class studied this book. Although I can’t remember all, the way he explained the Trinity made a lasting impression on me. I have shared this with many through the years. It goes like this …

The Ocean is God – powerful, vast, sparkling, surrounding all, covering all as far as eyes can see and beyond
The Wave is Jesus – (integral part) – connected to God – a part of God comes back and forth from God to us bringing Him to us and us to Him
The Mist is the Holy Spirit – also connected to the ocean (God) – Jesus comes from the movement – Jesus cannot be seen, but can be felt

I have personally experienced this special connection, treasure it, and visually reconnect anytime I have gone to the ocean. I also have a necklace I found in Florida depicting a wave and call it my “Jesus necklace”. I encourage you to stand on the shore and experience it for yourself. May it stay in your heart and vision as it has for years in mine!”

Thank you for sharing, Emilee – this really makes me look forward to my next trip to the beach!

A Special Offering for a New Beginning

Some of you may have noticed your pastor has seemed a little preoccupied, distracted, or perhaps even a little crazy. Normally, serving this Church has afforded me plenty of time for meditation, studying and praying as I prepare for Sunday worship. The past few months has not been that way. Instead, much of my time has been spent with our lawyers, our way-forward committee, studying how to separate from the United Methodist Church, meeting with the district and conference officers, filling out my retirement papers from the United Methodist Church, and leading as God directs our Church towards a new beginning. Yes, it has been a busy time yet a time of great opportunity.

Today, we are a free and independent Church. No longer do we have to listen to a Bishop, Superintendent, pay apportionments or be a part of a bureaucracy fighting over issue that the Bible has settled 2000 years ago. Now we abide in God’s word and listen only to Him as we prepare for our future ministry.

This Sunday, we will give all the opportunity to give a love offering for our new beginnings as a church with a new identity and new ministry. Please consider this opportunity and be in prayer for God’s guidance for your ministry and our new beginning as McCormick Methodist Church.

See you in Church or online this Sunday,
Your Pastor,

Nels

Acts of Kindness

Royal Advice from A Princess!

A special thanks to Lay Leader Lindy Stahlman for sharing this kindness quote from much loved Princess Diana – a reminder that kindness always bounces back to us! I also appreciate Lindy’s sharing the message below from Max Lucado who, as she says, “always makes the point so well”:

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends,” – John 15: 13  Think for a minute about the people in your world. What do they think of your commitment to them? How would you rate your faithfulness? Does your loyalty ever waiver? Do you have one person with whom your “contract” is nonnegotiable?

Once, two friends were fighting together in a war. The combat was ferocious, and many lives were being taken. When one of the two young soldiers was injured and could not get back to the trenches, the other went out to get him against his officer’s orders. He returned mortally wounded, and his friend, whom he had carried back, was dead.

The officer looked at the dying soldier, shook his head, and said, “It wasn’t worth it.” The young boy, overhearing the remark, smiled and said “But it was worth it, sir, because when I got to him, he said, “Jim, I knew you would come.”

Make the most of your relationships. Follow the advice of Benjamin Franklin: “Be slow in choosing friends and be even slower in leaving them.”

What a beautiful and powerful message for us, Lindy! Again, thank you for sharing!

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

You can say “God Bless America”.

Would you believe the guy in the above picture, Gene Simmons, the “demon” with the rock band known as KISS loves America? Read his story below.

Gene Simmons of the group KISS visited the Pentagon to promote military service on May 16, 2019 where he talked about his mother, who recently died at the age of 93. She was 14 when she was put in a Nazi concentration camp. As he spoke he had to stop on numerous occasions to gain his composure. This is what he said:

“I was born in Israel. I am a proud son of a concentration camp survivor, Nazi Germany. My mother was 14 when she was in the camps. My mother just passed at 93, but if Americans could see and hear my mother talk about America they would understand. I’ll just cut to the chase. When we first came to America my mother let me stay up and watch TV with her. I couldn’t speak English very well and my mother could barely get by. She worked 6 days a week and at night we would watch the news and whatever and by 12 o’clock the 3 or 4 TV stations would go off the air and we would hear sssssss, just noise and people would presumably go to sleep. Before then we saw a jet flying through the sky and a man with in very deep voice was saying something, i couldn’t understand it, and the jet then turned skyward and flew seemingly into the heavens through the clouds and I remember what the man said, “…and saw the face of God.”

And then it melted into a black and white, because in those days we didn’t have color TV. The flag was full screen, billowing, and I heard, ‘da da da da da da,’ you know the National Anthem. I didn’t know what it was or what was going on and it was almost time to go to sleep. It was late. And, every time, my mother saw the flag, she would start crying. As an eight year old boy I didn’t understand why, but from my mother’s point of view we were finally safe. I may have been born in the country, that people throughout history have referred to as the promised land, but take my word for it…America is the promised land. For everybody. And don’t be ashamed. Don’t hesitate. We need to teach young people to be comfortable saying, ‘God bless America.'”

We thank God for our nation and the freedom for which it stands. May we show our gratitude to God by telling all in our nation about Jesus Christ. It will make our nation greater than ever.

See you in Church or online this Sunday.

Preparing for Worship

Sunday, July 9 – 10AM

Sixth Sunday After Pentecost
Scripture Lesson: Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-39
Message: “Let Go and Lighten Up”
by Debbie Wissinger Certified Lay Speaker
Ohio United Methodist Conference

We welcome Debbie Wissinger as our guest preacher this Sunday as Rev. Ledwell takes a few days vacation from July 5th until July 12.

First Tuesday
Stephen Ministry Corner

New Beginnings. Our church is certainly starting a ‘New Beginning.’ Our name has changed but our purpose has not changed. We are still a gathering of people who believe in Jesus Christ. And we believe in what Christ told us, as stated in Matthew, that the most important commandments are … ”Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39 NIV)

Stephen Ministry’s purpose is to fulfill Christ’s commandments by loving our neighbor and helping that neighbor through any difficulty they may have. We follow Christ’s charge to “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2 KJV)

Therefore, if you are experiencing any type of difficulty and you need someone to listen to you, with whom you can share your feelings and receive acceptance and Christian love, please consider being in a relationship with a Stephen Minister at MMC and allowing us to help ‘bear your burden.’

start by calling Pastor Nels or one of the Stephen Leaders thru the church office at (864) 852-2394.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness – The Purest Form of Heroism!

Quote by Tom McNeal
I thank Pastor Nels for leading us into our Independence Day kindness blog with his sermon this past Sunday entitled “Our Nation’s Heroes”. He challenged us to consider the question, “Who is or what is a hero?”, and to even think about how we can be heroes.

As he cited characteristics of a hero, wouldn’t you know that kindness would be one of them? Some of the others were someone who saves someone, is generous, brave, bold, will stand up for what is right, doing it with humility, etc. Heroes come in many forms, he said, and he also reminded us that who we choose to be our hero says a lot about us.

In closing, Pastor Nels challenged us to be heroes like the seventy heroes that Jesus sent out in Luke 10. When they came back to Jesus, he said he saw “Satan fall like lightning from the sky”. Our challenge is to say, “Today I am going to tell someone about Jesus” in order to defeat Satan and carry on God’s work.

As Christians, we can help make our country a better place for all Americans! May the true freedom we have through Jesus’ sacrifice for us ring in our hearts today and everyday as we proclaim, “God Bless America!”

This week’s Kindness entry is especially appropriate for this 4th of July as we express our gratitude for the freedoms we have because of the tremendous sacrifices of our heroes, and we also put on the Armor of God! As I think about the kindness of heroes in my life, I am reminded of the following motion song I sang as a young child during Sunday School – it is sung to the tune of “The Old Grey Mare”, and the words are: “I may never march in the infantry, Ride in the cavalry, Shoot the artillery. I may never fly o’er the enemy, but I’m in the Lord’s Army! Yes, Sir!”

Thank you for giving to McCormick United Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

Welcome to McCormick Methodist Church

This Sunday, July 2, 2023, you will come to a Church with a new name. Yes, welcome to McCormick Methodist Church. By then we will have officially left the United Methodist Church and after paying the South Carolina United Methodist Conference $139,000, we now own all our property.

McCormick Methodist Church is now an independent Methodist Church that holds to orthodox Christian doctrine as defined by the Articles of Religion given to us by the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. We stand by the traditional creeds that affirm our Trinitarian God and salvation by faith through the grace of the risen Jesus Christ. We uphold the authority of all Scripture as God’s word and that it contains all that is necessary for our salvation. And yes, for those who will ask, we believe that marriage is between and man and a woman and that sexual relations outside of marriage is not compatible with Christian teaching.

In regards to the last sentence above, we exclude no one from coming to our Church. We all have our sinful nature and all need God’s grace. We pray that all will be transformed into a Godly life by the grace of God yet we acknowledge that no one is perfect as we are all broken as people who have inherited our nature through the fall of Adam and Eve.

What really excites me is we are no longer tied to the politics and bureaucracy of a denomination. Instead, our inspiration and calling comes from our willingness to listen to the will of Jesus Christ and in Him we discern our ministry and our mission. We will be the Church and that is what matters.

This Sunday, you will enter a prayer-driven church that is ready to obey the Great Commission. We are a Church with a heart that loves all people and will serve in ministry and in mission so we can all have salvation and a place with the Lord in Heaven and take as many with us as we can.

Welcome to McCormick Methodist Church!

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Builds Relationships That Last a Lifetime!

(Photos reprinted from June 21 publication of Christian Healthcare Ministries)

And here’s the “rest of the story” from the Upworthy website: We all love a good “hero” story. However, we rarely get a glimpse of what happens after those “feel-good” stories take place. It’s not often that we get to witness firsthand the lasting impact made from one good deed. That’s what makes this story so special.

Xavier Dimples was only 2 years old when his house caught fire, leaving him trapped inside. Without a firefighter named Jeff Ohs bravely entering the burning building to pull the toddler out of the wreckage and resuscitating him, Xavier would have perished.

Twenty-three years after the incident, Xavier was able to reunite with Ohs, introducing him to his son who was the exact same age as Xavier when Ohs rescued him. Now 25, Xavier is working to become a firefighter himself!

I was so touched by this story when I heard it on the television news that I just had to look it up and share it with any who might have missed it! Hope it touches your heart as well!

This week’s entry tells of an act of kindness at the grocery store. I pushed my filled grocery cart to my car, then suddenly realized I didn’t have my keys! I really didn’t want to push the cart back up to the store but didn’t know what else to do – when a young lady who had observed my dilemma offered to stay with my cart while I went back in, even telling me, “I saw a set of keys at the check-out counter”. She was right, and they were mine, and I thanked her for her kindness when I returned!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

The Creed from the Council of Chalcedon
I am continuing with my articles on the basic creeds and the theology of our Church as Wesleyan Methodists. This Week I will address the subject of Christology.

The Creed from Chalcedon

We, then, following the holy fathers, all with one consent teach men to confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the same perfect in Godhead and also perfect in manhood; truly God and truly man, of a rational soul and body;
coessential with the Father according to the Godhead, and consubstantial with us according to the manhood; in all things like unto us, without sin; begotten before all ages of the Father according to the Godhead, and in these latter days, for us and for our salvation, born of the Virgin Mary, the mother of God, according to the manhood; one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures, without confusion, without change, without division, without separation; the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the union, but rather the property of each nature being preserved, and concurring in one person and one subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son, and only begotten, God the Word, the Lord Jesus Christ; as the prophets from the beginning have declared concerning Him, and the Lord Jesus Christ Himself has taught us, and the creed of the holy fathers has handed down to us.

Note: The Chalcedonian Definition is a declaration of Christ’s nature, adopted at the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451. Chalcedon was an early centre of Christianity located in Asia Minor. The council was the fourth of the Ecumenical Councils that are accepted by Chalcedonian churches which include the Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, the Anglican Communion and most Protestant churches. It was the first council not to be recognised by any Oriental Orthodox church; for this reason these churches may be classified as Non-Chalcedonian.Now, more than ever, we need to face the question, “Who is the real Jesus?” Is the Christ of faith the Jesus of history? What is the truth about Jesus? What can we believe? We turn to the Apostles’ Creed which has given the church’s answer for 2,000 years.

John R Brokoff, explains the debate and the result of the Council of Chalcedon well.

There were different positions

It is not strange that the most popular question of our time is, “Who is Jesus?” Was this question not answered in Matthew 16:16 when Peter said to Jesus at Caesarea Philippi: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God”? In Jesus’ day, too, there were different opinions about Jesus. When on a retreat with his disciples, he asked them what people were saying about him. The public was divided: Jesus was considered to be John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. What more of an answer do we need than the answer of Peter? Jesus accepted his answer as the truth, for he said, “Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven” (Matthew 16:17). Yet, after twenty centuries, we do not believe what Peter said about the identity of Jesus. According to a Gallup poll, 42 percent of Americans agreed with the statement: “Jesus is the Son of God.” A recent report from Germany indicated that only one out of every four believe in Jesus Christ. Throughout Christian history down to the present, there are different views of Jesus. Now let us look at some of them.

1. The All-Human Jesus

Human

According to this position, Jesus is 100 percent human. It was held as early as the first centuries of Christianity by the Ebionites. They denied that Jesus was divine. He was only a teacher, prophet, miracle-man, and one with an outstanding character. But he was not divine, the Son of God. Today this view is held by many, including atheists, agnostics, Unitarians, Jews, Moslems, and other non-Christian religions.

2. The All-Divine Jesus

Divine

Opposite the Ebionites, Docetists held that Jesus was entirely divine. He was not at all human. This view was originally taught by Eutychus, a monk in a monastery near Constantinople. In the fourth century, Appolonarius, bishop of Laodicea, popularized the teaching. It was known as Docetism, from the Latin word docere meaning “to seem.” It just seemed that Jesus was human. It was based on the idea that the physical and material were inherently evil. The human body therefore was sinful. Jesus therefore was not human, for God could not be identified with sin. Docetists held that Jesus’ human nature was swallowed up by the divine. This denied the Incarnation, the biblical teaching that “the Word became flesh.”

3. The Half And Half Jesus

Human/Divine

Nestorians took the view that Jesus was half human and half divine. It was taught by Nestorius, bishop of Constantinople, in the fifth century. To this day it is a very popular understanding of Jesus. When we see Jesus hungry, thirsty, and tired, we say it was because he was human. When he struggles in prayer and on the cross cries out, “My God, why …?” we see the human Jesus. On the other hand, Jesus is God when he walks on water, feeds 5,000, raises the dead, heals lepers, and rises from the grave. The problem with this view is that we have a divided Jesus — two persons in one body.

4. The Adopted Jesus

Divine

Human

This is known as adoptionism. According to this position, Jesus came into the world as a human. Because of his moral excellence, his perfect obedience to God, his wisdom, his compassion for people, and his willing sacrifice of himself on the cross, the Father adopted him as his son at his baptism. This adoption was confirmed by the resurrection and the ascension. Jesus then became a deified man.

5. The Both And Jesus

Human & Divine

The above different positions concerning Jesus caused great concern, for the gospel was at stake. If Jesus were only human, then he was just a martyr on the cross and not the Lamb that took away the sin of the world. If he were only human, the resurrection was a fairy tale. His promises of forgiveness and eternal life were meaningless. His claims to know God and to be one with God would then be the words of a religious fanatic who was deluded into thinking he was the Son of God.

On the other hand, if Jesus were only divine and not human, humanity would be the loser. Because he was human, he became one of us. As a human, he fulfilled the law for us. Through his humanity we could see the nature of God. Above all, he became sin for us so that sin, through him, could go out of the world. As a human Jesus knows our human condition. Like all of us he was tempted and he showed that by the power of God we can overcome temptation to sin.

Consequently, the church had to take a stand on the question of Jesus. Is he only human, only divine, or half and half? In 451 A.D. the church held a council at Chalcedon to decide the issue. The church decided that it was not a matter of Jesus being fully God or fully human, or half and half, but it was a matter of both, both fully human and fully divine. To this day the church holds to this truth stated at Chalcedon:

We confess one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, perfect in manhood, truly God and truly man, or a rational soul and a body, of one substance with the Father with respect to the Godhead, and of one substance with us in respect of the manhood, like us in everything but sin …

This is to say that Jesus is fully God and fully man. These two natures are blended into one integrated personality. He is not a split personality, nor does he suffer from schizophrenia. It is like a blender in your kitchen. Suppose you put apples, peaches, and pears in it and pushed the “on” button for a minute. Now what do you have — apples, peaches, and pears? Yes, you do, but can you tell which is which? They have become one fruit, one substance. Also, it is like homogenized milk. When the raw milk comes from the farm, a dairy runs it through a homogenizer. As the milk runs through the machine, pistons compact the milk so that the cream and skim milk are made one. As a result you cannot take cream off the milk. In the same way, the human and divine natures of Jesus are compacted into one integrated person.

This means that the Father and the Son are one. When Jesus prays, God also prays. When the human Jesus suffers and dies on a cross, God is in Jesus enduring the cross. “God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself” (2 Corinthians 5:19). When the human Jesus speaks, it is also God who speaks. When Jesus weeps, God weeps. This truth makes us realize the seriousness of the cross. It was not only a human on the cross, but God was there in Jesus. Good Friday is the day God died in Jesus. Indeed, the murderers did not know what they were doing; they did not know they were killing God! As the spiritual says, “Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.”

As Wesleyan Methodist, we believe Jesus was fully human and fully divine.

See you in Church or online this Sunday.

Nels

Prayer Quilt Ministry

Jessica delivered her friend John Mark McQuown’s prayer quilt to him on Saturday, June 17. Before going to John Mark, the quilt spent a little time at the Burton Center where John Mark’s friends and staff there had the chance to tie knots and pray for him. His sisters, Mary Margaret and Kathleen, expressed their appreciation to our Church Family, and especially to the Prayers & Squares Small Group, for this beautiful expression of love and support. The frogs and music notes on the quilt were most appropriate as John Mark’s grandmother had quite an assortment of frog collectibles – and music notes represent his more than 35 years in the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood! They appreciate your continued prayers for John Mark and his family!

Thank You From Girl Scouts

The Girl Scout troop that meets in our facilities left this wonderful “Thank You” banner in our fellowship hall.

Acts of Kindness

Kindness is Letting God Define Our Moments!

Kindness that is passed on to others is like sharing God’s Love with one another – as the song says: “we want to pass it on!” That is just what Lindy Stahlman did this week when she received the message below from Tom Urban. She shared it! And, as a result, we get to hear a powerful contemporary Christian song by New Song entitled Defining Moment. Like me, I think you will be excited to know that Lindy hopes to incorporate this song into our summer worship services – Yay!!!

Tom’s Message to Lindy is as follows: Hi Lindy, I sense you like contemporary Christian music. So, a story – I raised my 4 children across the river in a community called Plantation Point in Lincolnton, GA. Every year, I would take my children and youth from our church to Winter Jam in Augusta hosted by New Song. There were usually about 5 bands and the “headliners” were groups like Toby Mac who I did not care for but the children loved. Anyway – generation gap. But I loved New Song. Their instrumentational talent was phenomenal. Thank you, Tom and Lindy! To listen to the inspiring words of Defining Moment, please click the link below. In case you prefer to read the beautiful lyrics, you will find them printed below also.

Defining Moment by New Song

There comes a time, in every heart, a time of real decision, when we reach the point of choosin’ how we would live our lives

All our hopes, all our dreams will rise up from that moment, the moment we surrender, and choose to follow Christ.
He’s been waiting all our lives to hear us say, “I am yours, Lord, take my hand and lead the way”

CHORUS
When you believe He’s all you need, that will be your defining moment.
As you live your life walking in His light, trusting Him completely,
that will be, that will be your defining moment.

All I have, all I am, is resting in his promise-the promise that he’ll make me everything that I should be.
I will live, I will die, for the cause he set before me- to take this love inside my heart for all the world to see.
All of heaven celebrates when they hear someone say-“I am yours, Lord, take my hand and lead the way” (Chorus)

His amazing grace is such a mystery- How in an instant it can make your life complete (Chorus)

Praise God for our “defining moment” in His Son Jesus who keeps us aware of His grace and mercy through examples like this week’s Kindness entry: We were unloading our very full cart in the grocery parking lot, when a young woman came up and asked if she could help. Since there was a case of 24 cans of coconut water in the bottom of the cart we gratefully accepted her offer. She then asked if there was anything else which we refused and thanked her. As soon as she was gone, I remarked that we should be ashamed of ourselves. We had seen this girl earlier and remarked not very kindly about all the piercings on her face. “Judge not, or you too will be judged.” Matthew 7:1 Lesson learned!

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

WHAT IS ALPHA?

Alpha is an 8 week course designed to create a space for honest conversation around some of life’s biggest questions. It is designed to provide guests, churched and unchurched, an opportunity to connect with one another while providing the opportunity to share thoughts, ideas, and opinions in a safe and caring environment. Alpha helps bring people together while providing the chance to encounter Jesus.

Each week consists of a meal together, viewing a video taped talk and then breaking into small discussion groups. You will hear more about the program in the weeks to come. Please start to think and pray for those you would like to invite who may not yet know Jesus. Both Rich and Kim Jackson attended the Alpha Course in 2010, feel free to ask them any questions you may have.

The Apostles’ Creed

This week we continue our study on what we believe and will believe as the new McCormick Methodist Church. Enjoy!

The Apostles’ Creed (100 A.D.) is the oldest and shortest creed with only 109 words in the traditional version. Only the New Testament creed, “Jesus is Lord,” is older. It is also the most often used — practically every Sunday, except for festivals and seasons when the Nicene Creed is confessed. Undoubtedly, it is the most universal statement of the Christian faith.

By 100 A.D. the Apostles’ Creed became the basic statement of faith for the church. In the first century, it was the rule of faith for baptismal candidates. In 390 it became known as the Apostles’ Creed, even though it was not written by the apostles but contained the beliefs of the apostles. An ancient legend has it that after Pentecost the apostles agreed on a summary of what they were going to preach. The summary was the Apostles’ Creed. Yet, the creed did not reach its final form until the sixth or seventh century. Martin Luther held this creed in such high regard that he used it in his Small Catechism to teach families what a Christian believes. To this day the Small Catechism is used as the basis for youth and adult preparation for church membership in Lutheran churches.

The earliest known mention of the expression “Apostles’ Creed” occurs in a letter of AD 390 from a synod in Milan. The most traditional version of the creed is as follows:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

*that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places
________________________________________

The Old Roman Symbol (Latin: vetus symbolum romanum), or Old Roman Creed, is an earlier and shorter version of the Apostles’ Creed. It was based on the 2nd-century Rule of Faith and the interrogatory declaration of faith for those receiving Baptism. It is said that this earlier and first adopted version was based on the Trinitarian formula found in The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19. It was widely accepted in the 4th century, that, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, each of the Twelve Apostles contributed an article to the twelve articles of this creed:

I believe in God the Father almighty;
and in Christ Jesus His only Son, our Lord,
Who was born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
Who under Pontius Pilate was crucified and buried,
on the third day rose again from the dead,
ascended to heaven,
sits at the right hand of the Father,
whence He will come to judge the living and the dead;
and in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Church,
the remission of sins,
the resurrection of the flesh
(the life everlasting)

We will continue to use the Apostles’ Creed in our worship services and it will be a part of our statement of faith in our new Church By-laws. Our new Church will adhere to orthodox Wesleyan theology and will remain faithful to all scripture found in the Holy Bible.

More to come next week but for now…I will see you in Church or online this Sunday. Come and be a part of our new beginning as a Church faithful to Jesus Christ! We will officially become the new McCormick Methodist Church on July 1 2023.

Your Pastor,
Nels

Acts of Kindness

Kindness – Is A Father to Look Up To!

This photo, taken at our local Food Lion in McCormick, just had to be taken!!!

In the checkout line at our local Food Lion several months ago, I looked down the aisle and saw the cutest sight – a father and son – dressed alike in camo shorts, gray t-shirts, caps, and sandals – walking alongside each other as they pushed their shopping carts! And, of all things, I didn’t have my cellphone with me to get a picture!

I ran home to get it – just knowing that by the time I returned they would be gone – but they were still in the store! I spoke with them, introduced myself, and asked if I could take their picture and use it for our Father’s Day kindness blog, and they said “yes” – no names, of course! The picture reminds me of the important leadership role that fathers – and father figures – play in the lives of children, and it was refreshing to be reminded in such a sweet way!

As we observe Father’s Day this coming Sunday, June 18, here are the top five scriptures I found online for this special day on a list entitled “Best Father’s Day Bible Verses to Make Dad Feel Blessed”.

Ephesians 6:4: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Proverbs 1:8: “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching.”
2 Corinthians 6:18: “And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”
Psalm 103:13: “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”
Proverbs 22:6: “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

As Christians, the act of kindness reminds us that we all have our Heavenly Father to look up to! This week’s entry is an example of the positive influence we have on children. It is as follows: The grandmother, bursting with pride as she shared this story, reminded me of how children learn what they live! Her very young grandson Noah who was a preemie baby and receiving special tutoring instructions was engaged in a game with his teacher where a correct spelling of a word would give points to the speller. When asked to spell the word “were” Noah spelled it “w-e-e-r” – when the teacher told him that was incorrect, he told her, I knew it was spelled “w-e-r-e”, I just felt bad that you didn’t have any points and I wanted to give you some!”

MEN N MINISTRY

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

Our church family certainly enjoyed pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee, and the fellowship after church on Sunday, June 11. Thank you to John Yerdon and the Men N Ministry! (The blueberry pancakes were PARTICULARY WONDERFUL!!!)

From Men N Ministry president (Bob Rennie)
John Yerdon suggested the men try an after church pancake breakfast. He thought we could cook and hold the food early by using our new warmer oven. We decided to keep the price very reasonable at $5.00 for the first trial.

Everything worked out wonderfully. The food was warm and delicious! A good number of congregation attended and they raved about everything! I am sure we will try doing something like this again in the future.

We generated $238 for the kitchen renovation project, which is well underway.
Between this breakfast and the proceeds from the Biscuits and Blessings, we have donated almost $600.

Thanks to John Yerdon for suggesting the breakfast, purchasing all the food and running the kitchen. Thanks for all the helpers, you did a good job, And thank you to the church family for supporting our first pancake breakfast in a long time!

WORSHIP WITH US – SUNDAY 10AM

Online Giving

Quick-Step Guide (PDF) for setting up your account and making your first donation.

Thank you for giving to McCormick United Methodist Church. Your gifts enable us to fulfill our mission of “Reaching Up and Reaching Out”.

from Rev. C. Nels Ledwell

As I promised last week when we studied the Nicene Creed, we will take a look at another early-Church Creed.

Athanasian Creed:
Athanasius, known as Athanasius of Alexandria, was the 20th bishop of Alexandria. His intermittent episcopacy spanned 45 years, of which over 17 encompassed five exiles. He is traditionally thought to be the author of the this Creed named after him. It was created to guard Nicene Christianity from the heresy of Arianism. It is widely accepted as orthodox and some abreviated version of it are still in use today. And yes, the intro and outro are actually part of the original text.

Whoever desires to be saved should above all hold to the catholic faith.

Anyone who does not keep it whole and unbroken will doubtless perish eternally.

Now this is the catholic faith:

That we worship one God in trinity and the trinity in unity,
neither blending their persons
nor dividing their essence.
For the person of the Father is a distinct person,
the person of the Son is another,
and that of the Holy Spirit still another.
But the divinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is one,
their glory equal, their majesty coeternal.

What quality the Father has, the Son has, and the Holy Spirit has.
The Father is uncreated,
the Son is uncreated,
the Holy Spirit is uncreated.

The Father is immeasurable,
the Son is immeasurable,
the Holy Spirit is immeasurable.
The Father is eternal,
the Son is eternal,

the Holy Spirit is eternal.
And yet there are not three eternal beings;
there is but one eternal being.
So too there are not three uncreated or immeasurable beings;
there is but one uncreated and immeasurable being.

Similarly, the Father is almighty,
          the Son is almighty,
          the Holy Spirit is almighty.
Yet there are not three almighty beings;
there is but one almighty being.

Thus the Father is God,
the Son is God,
the Holy Spirit is God.
          Yet there are not three gods;
          there is but one God.

Thus the Father is Lord,
the Son is Lord,
the Holy Spirit is Lord.
          Yet there are not three lords;
          there is but one Lord.

Just as Christian truth compels us
to confess each person individually
as both God and Lord,
so catholic religion forbids us
to say that there are three gods or lords.

The Father was neither made nor created nor begotten from anyone.
The Son was neither made nor created;
he was begotten from the Father alone.
The Holy Spirit was neither made nor created nor begotten;
he proceeds from the Father and the Son.

Accordingly there is one Father, not three fathers;
there is one Son, not three sons;
there is one Holy Spirit, not three holy spirits.

Nothing in this trinity is before or after,
nothing is greater or smaller;
in their entirety the three persons
are coeternal and coequal with each other.
So in everything, as was said earlier,
we must worship their trinity in their unity
and their unity in their trinity.

Anyone then who desires to be saved
should think thus about the trinity.

But it is necessary for eternal salvation
that one also believe in the incarnation
of our Lord Jesus Christ faithfully.

Now this is the true faith:

That we believe and confess
that our Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son,
is both God and human, equally.

He is God from the essence of the Father,
begotten before time;
and he is human from the essence of his mother,
born in time;
completely God, completely human,
with a rational soul and human flesh;
equal to the Father as regards divinity,
less than the Father as regards humanity.

Although he is God and human,
yet Christ is not two, but one.
He is one, however,
not by his divinity being turned into flesh,
but by God’s taking humanity to himself.
He is one,
certainly not by the blending of his essence,
but by the unity of his person.
For just as one human is both rational soul and flesh,
so too the one Christ is both God and human.

He suffered for our salvation;
he descended to hell;
he arose from the dead;
he ascended to heaven;
he is seated at the Father’s right hand;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
At his coming all people will arise bodily
and give an accounting of their own deeds.
Those who have done good will enter eternal life,
and those who have done evil will enter eternal fire.

This is the catholic faith:
one cannot be saved without believing it firmly and faithfully.
________________________________________

This ecumenical creed (428 A.D.) is probably unknown to most Christians because it is seldom, if ever, used in worship services. It is probably not used because of its length. The Nicene Creed has eighteen printed lines, whereas the Athanasian has 69. It is difficult for congregations to use because of the creed’s intricate and complex terms.

Though the creed carries the name of Athanasius, he did not write it. It was the product of the church of his time. The creed was named after him to honor him for his brave and forceful defense of the Trinity. Athanasius (289-373) was a bishop in Alexandria, Egypt.

The creed deals primarily with the Trinity and Jesus as the Son of God. At this time, the heresy of Arius was prominent. He taught that Jesus was not fully human or divine and that the Holy Spirit was not God but only a divine influence. The Athanasian Creed denounced these false teachings and upheld the doctrine of the Trinity. Luther’s high regard for this creed was expressed: “I doubt, since the days of the Apostles, anything more important and more glorious has ever been written in the church of the New Testament.”

As we move towards becoming an independent Church, it is important for us to be reminded of our orthodox theology influenced by John Wesley and the early Methodists. Next week we will study the Apostle’s Creed.

See you in Church or online this Sunday!

Acts of Kindness

Kindness Gives From the Heart

Food for Thought: A farmer secretly paid for his neighbors’ prescriptions for years. Would you give this way to others — even if you wouldn’t receive any public recognition or reward?

This is a story of true kindness from the heart – it is found and reprinted from the website of The Guardian, an independent, reader-funded news source. It’s the story of a man named Hody Childress who made anonymous cash donations to a pharmacy in the farming town of Geraldine, Alabama, helping neighbors struggling to pay for their prescription medications.

In 2010, Mr. Childress walked into Geraldine Drugs and pulled Dr. Heather Walker, the pharmacist, aside. “‘I have a question,’” she recalled him saying, “‘Do you ever have anyone who can’t pay for their medication?’” “‘Well, yeah, that happens a good bit,’” she told him.

He handed her a folded hundred-dollar bill and said, “‘The next time that happens, I want you to use this. I want it to be anonymous. I don’t want to know any details on who you use it on, just tell them this is a blessing from the Lord,’” he told her.

He came back a month later with another folded bill, a practice he continued until late 2022, when he became too ill with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to leave his home. At that point, he decided to confide his secret to one other person, his daughter, Tania Nix, who promised to carry on the contributions.

Mr. Childress’s daughter said of her father’s act of kindness, “I think he felt like he couldn’t not give. Giving that way, that just got on his heart and he felt like he needed to do it.” The pharmacist shared these words about his generosity: “There are so many people in Geraldine who have lived longer because of Hody. He was a true humble servant who will always be loved.”

It was only after his death in January at age 80 that the wider community learned of Hody’s good deed. Now, his family and donors from across the United States have vowed to continue his legacy. The kindness from his heart became a gift that will keep on giving for many years to come!

Mr. Childress honored Jesus’ instruction to us from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6: 3-4 – But when you do a kindness to someone, do it secretly—don’t tell your left hand what your right hand is doing,4 And your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.

Speaking of kindnesses from the heart, this week’s kindness entry, a very inspiring response received following last week’s Kindness Update, is a really good example: “That (Vietnam War Memorial) wall brings so many tears, and yes, stories! I’ve been there several times to trace names for friends who could not get there… it was amazing every time I went!”

Have you seen God today? If you see God at work this week, there are two ways you can share what you saw!

Stephen Ministry

One recent Sunday Pastor Nels sermon included the following quote on the screen,

“When someone is going through a storm, your silent presence is more powerful than a million empty words.” ~Thelma Davis

Got me to thinking … that this is what Stephen Ministers do. We listen … and, if someone doesn’t want to talk, that is okay. We can just listen to the silence. Hopefully, it’s through our ‘presence’ that the Holy Spirit does its job and brings about ‘God’s peace’ from anxiety, fear, and the angst of difficult times.

For those who haven’t seen season 1 yet, a link to the series is provided below. It’s free to watch and you’re encouraged to “Binge Jesus” although, you don’t have to have watched season 1 to attend the study but we’re sure you’ll go back to watch it after you’ve seen season 2!

Sign up sheets will be in Fellowship Hall at the church or you can email Kim Jackson.

MEN N MINISTRY

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

SUNDAY, JUNE 11 AFTER SERVICE

The Men N Ministry will be serving pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee after church on Sunday, June 11. John Yerdon will be mixing his own pancake batter for the event. A $ 5.00 donation will get you the works. The men will be donating proceeds to the church kitchen renovation project. We will be using our new warming oven to keep sausages and pancakes heated. This will offer faster service and warm food. Please plan on attending this fun and enjoyable church breakfast.

Thanks – Bob Rennie

NOTE: If you can help John prepare, cook, or serve the pancakes, there is a sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall.

FABULOUS FUN SISTERS IN FAITH RETREAT

AUGUST 4 AND AUGUST 5

HICKORY KNOB

Fabulous Fun Sisters in Faith Retreat—1st EVER/Education Committee & Maxine Dunn

Our retreat foundation is based on Mark 6:31 “Let us go off by ourselves to some place where we will be alone, and you can rest a while”.

What you need to do now is check your calendar, if you’re available write a commitment check to McCormick United Methodist Church for $25 and put EDUCATION COMMITTEE on it. This is holding your half of a room, the park is crowded in the summer and if we don’t fill the rooms we’ll need to give them back.

Activities will be Friday night and Saturday morning through lunch. Details will be worked out as we find out how many women will be involved.

Those women who would like to join us for Saturday morning activities only please call one of us and let us know you’re interested so we can plan. All are welcome and you can be a part of the program, or a participant! Let the Holy Spirit direct you!!!

Questions? Please call Maxine Dunn, or Kim Jackson or Wendy Kvale.
